Title: Penny Dreadful
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on January 04, 2016, 09:51:02 PM
New Year’s resolutions for 12 of TV’s biggest screwups - Vanessa, ‘Penny Dreadful’ (http://zap2it.com/2016/01/new-years-resolutions-for-tv-characters-2016/)
(Scroll down to the last resolution.)

Green gave a phenomenal, tour de force performance this season...

but Vanessa was a bit victimized and disempowered too. after awhile it grew exhausting.

Sadly I see where PD lost out to Mr. Robot as Best Drama Series in last night's Critics' Choice Awards. And as much as I love the work of some of the people who did win, it was even sadder that Eva Green lost out to Carrie Coon of The Leftovers in the Best Actress In A Drama Series category, Helen McCrory lost out to Constance Zimmer of UnREAL in the Best Supporting Actress In A Drama Series, and Patti LuPone lost out to Margo Martindale for her appearance on The Good Wife in the Best Guest Actor/Actress In A Drama Series.

Penny Dreadful Season 3 Trailer Is Crazy, Sexy and (Yep) Satanic (http://tvline.com/2016/02/25/penny-dreadful-season-3-trailer-showtime/)

And what a wild poster! I'd love to know who thought up how to use that pose and shadow...

looks sensational. as always...

but I'll say it again I'm growing weary of the victimized and disempowered Vanessa. I miss the glamorous and mysterious figure from season one.

I think I am going to particularly enjoy Ethan's plot line - looks like we gona get us a western this season, lol.

I'm really ready for Vanessa to do something other than shred the walls in the loony bin.

After the events of the last season, I would expect to find Malcolm in there, not her.

But, we'll have to see how it all plays out.

me too. I'm over exorcisms, breakdowns and hospitalizations for Vanessa. we've been there.

Green can chew the scenery to shreds. WE. GET. IT.

it's "Emmy worthy" stuff. but the character is starting to seem weak and overly victimized.

A friend just posted a link for a new PD trailer that is on Youtube on a channel Showtime runs for the series.  It's Eva Green talking about what's going on with Vanessa in the new season.  There are spoilers, of course, including some glimpses of Dr. Seward.  The character made me think of one of Grayson's roles.

I've seen it and it definitely raise my hopes that Vanessa would not spend the entirety of the season in the throes of another breakdown.

I want her to regain her power.

Penny Dreadful, Lost, Supernatural, Teen Wolf Enter March BADness Fray! (http://tvline.com/2016/03/15/best-tv-villains-tournament-lucifer-supernatural-void-stiles-teen-wolf/)

I wonder if it says anything about me that I watch or have watched all four of those shows? And from a pure villainy standpoint, I can't believe that at the moment Lost's Benjamin Linus (61.77%) is besting Penny Dreadful's Evelyn Poole (38.23%). But then, given that Lost was on ABC and not a pay-cable station like Showtime, I suppose more people know Benjamin Linus than do Evelyn Poole...

Thanks for posting this, MB. I tried watching the trailer an hour or two ago but it was glitchy. I'm hoping this will be glitch free. I won't be able to watch this season, so this will be a great teaser - I'll have to wait for the DVD to come out and put my name in for it at the library. No complaints as I am sure it will be well worth however long the wait is.

This season has really dragged for me.  Too much time was spent on Ethan's endless journey through the desert.  And having the characters inhabit all of in their own seperate storylines really isn't working that well thus far.  John Claire/Caliban's storyline, with Vanessa and otherwise has been the best of this season.  Dorian and Mr. Lyle continue to be criminally underused while the tiresome Brona/Lily eats up way too much screentime with her endless repetitive monologues.  I'm really hoping that before the end of season 3 we get some satisfying moment/reunion between the characters, there's way too much buildup right now.

I certainly binge watch Thriller, Horror, Sci-Fi, and Action & Adventure shows much faster than I do Comedies (earlier this week I binged the first two seasons of The Fall in 4 days), so I'd say the study's findings definitely match up with my viewing habits.

did Green quit? what's with the do or die attitude around her?

and even if Vanessa had "died" given that reanimation, ghosts and eternal life are major themes on the show she certainly could have popped up at any time. something about this whole thing is fishy.  [ghost_huh]

My perception, for what it's worth, is that a number of people, starting with John Logan, the writer/creator of PD, had other projects to move onto.  Logan had mentioned in interviews during the first year that he had planned a 3 year arc.  In a couple of interviews that I have read since the finale was broadcast, he said that during the course of working on season 3, it had become clear to him that the end of the arc was also going to be the end of the series.  Apparently the principal players involved, including Eva, agreed.

Pretty much the same thing with the "cancellation" of DS although it's never been directly stated that Dan Curtis was the one who ultimately made the decision to pull the plug so he could direct NoDS and then move onto other things.  That is the only explanation that fits the chronology and the other pieces of info that have become available over the years. He certainly had a full plate as soon as the series ended and he pretty much kept gone right on for decades afterwards.

i haven't seen the season yet but the complaint i've been seeing ( in addition to general disappointment that it's over) is that that they were introducing new characters and subplots throughout the season that ended up being pointless given that it was ending.

there's a general impression that things were being set up for a fourth season and then the plug was abruptly pulled by someone and they had to wrap things up hastily.

i haven't seen the season yet but the complaint i've been seeing ( in addition to general disappointment that it's over) is that that they were introducing new characters and subplots throughout the season that ended up being pointless given that it was ending.

there's a general impression that things were being set up for a fourth season and then the plug was abruptly pulled by someone and they had to wrap things up hastily.

Apparently those people aren't the only ones wondering (even though, like Gothick, I do think most of what's been said re: why it ended seems to make some sense). Scroll down to the bottom of the page here (http://tvline.com/2016/06/27/once-upon-a-time-season-6-spoilers-hyde-regina-ask-ausiello/).

A major plot strand in Season 1 was dropped abruptly and apparently never resumed.  It was kind of reminiscent of all the stuff about Gerard's pirate ship, the Java Queen, and her matey zombie crew--a major plot point in Summer 1970 that was practically nonexistent once they started with 1840.

Of the regulars, I don't think they ever bothered to integrate Dorian Gray at all into the plotline.  Too bad because Reeve Carney is really very good and was a screen presence who grew on me (initially, I just couldn't accept him as Oscar Wilde's Dorian, but this version of the character had his own groove going on).
