...that she had a front page, above the fold article published about her on Tuesday in one of her local area newspapers. But I have my spies everywhere, so it didn't escape me, PD. ;) (And, of course, the article references DS - but we would expect nothing less from her. :D)
Here's a link to the article: Old ghoul (http://www.heraldnews.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=16164728&BRD=1710&PAG=461&dept_id=99784&rfi=8)
And here's a scan of the accompanying photo (which isn't included on the Web site):

Congrats, PD! [thumb] It's so nice to see the show is becoming such a success.

I'd like to see the Shilling Shockers show!
Penny, ever think about streamlining it onto Google Video?

How wonderful PennyDreadful! My, you are getting up in the world.

Too cool. WTG, PD. ;D

Way to go,Penny Dreadful!
MB, a nod to your excellent spies.

Very groovy! My first thought upon seeing the photo is "they're all singing the Monster Mash!"
Gads, that Garou is such a hot Wolf, too!
Cheers and congrats!

Congrats, PD.
MB, a nod to your excellent spies.
Word is that he's putting the finishing touches on his own version of The Smoking Gun web site devoted exclusively to DS fans. I hear the mug shot gallery will be a riot. >:D
-
Wow, PennyDreadful, you're filling an important need and deserve the recognition. Great article-- congratulations!
-
Wow MB, you do have good spies! Thanks for posting the article!
Here's one from today's Standard Times with a more direct reference to DS.

David, I'll ask our webdesigner Rebecca about that. She knows loads more about that kind of thing
than I do.

Congratulations Penny on your media triumph. As someone who grew up with many great local horror hosts, Dr. Madblood of Norfolk, Count Gore Devol in DC area and my favorite, Petersburg VA's the Bowman Body, it is a great delight to see the spirit [Ghost00] of those shows alive, or undead as it were. All the best from the cemeteries of the south. [grim] Or, from our mausoleum to yours,

How neat! Congrats PennyDreadful!

Egad, PD! You are truly doing the Lord's work.
I have been a Svengooli viewer off and on for years. I trust you've heard of him. I'm on an Elvira message board as well.
A week or so ago, I saved a tape of the movie "M" from a video place selling off all its old movies for $1 each. I haven't watched it yet. My sister talked a lot about it. I also bought "Z". I had a chance to buy the mini-series "V" but passed.
Congrats on the press. Say hi to Loup for me.
-
Thanks guys!
Magnus- Yes, I know of Svengoolie! He's great!
-
Wow - congrats, and wishing you continued success!! [clap]
-
Hey congratulations! Now hopefully some network will pick you up!
-
I simply HATE the fact that I can't see your show down here. "M" is on my list of "Movies One Must See Before Dying!!" and I haven't seen it in ages.
I'm also old enough to have seen John Zacherle's show, which, I think, must have been one of the seminal influences for this kind of production, and I would enjoy the Hell out of a NEW version.
Congratulations. Stick with it. Get yourselves syndicated and kindly show up on MY Cable network.
Please? :D

Too fun and too cool!
What this country needs is a horror host in every broadcast market!
Continued success with the program!

That's absolutely fabulous news! I always loved "Creature Feature" night that we had on Saturday nights where they showed 3 horror movies in a row, complete with host.
Glad to see it back....Congrats Penny Dreadfull! Wishing you continued success
-
Now I wish I could see this too, besides the short clip on the forum a couple of months back. Around here all that's on public access these days are town meetings, old HS football games, polka parties at the senior center, etc. Nothing new or original in ages.
Here's hoping that someday you have the opportunity to go national. (Cue the "Star-Spangled Banner" on theremin...)
-
PennyDreadful, I think that is FANTASTIC!!! I grew up watching a local horror-hosted show called "Creature Feature," and have always wished that kind of thing was still happening. Thanks for picking up the tradition, and congratulations on your success!
-
WTG Penny Dreadful! Brings me back to the days of Jeepers Creepers and Ghoulita in the Los Angeles local area. Hopefully word will spread of your show and syndication will come along, and with all the terrible stuff on cable and regular tv, we could use a witty show that will show some of the old B horror movies.. I got first dibs on your first movie "The crawling eye"!
-
It's a great tradition to uphold - these kind of horror host programs go way back, and its high time some local flavor programming was resurrected, as it were. Way up in Bangor, Maine, we had Eddie Driscoll on WLBZ - TV, who, for thirty-five years, was a one-man gang of local programming, from Kid's shows, local commercial content and hosting Dialing for Dollars to Hosting "Weird," a fantastic late night horror movie show. He played a variety of characters on this and other late programs, but basically, as the torch bearers of today's late night movie shows do, he enlivened a lot of marginal horror movies with his fifteen to twenty minutes of horror humor and incredibly inventive (on a low budget) skits. This man once not only held his own with a visiting Milton Berle, but blew his doors off in an impromptu "laugh-off." His Crandall, a kind of Zacherly -cum- martian character was priceless. If you want to know or see more about this local legend, just find the WLBZ website, they are currently carrying several clips featuring Eddie who, sadly, is now an Alzheimer's sufferer. Kudos to you, Penny Dreadful, and Garou, and Von Bulow, and all the others who are doing their best to save this unique television tradition. Long May You Run!

Petofi - Thank you! I hadn't heard of "Crandall" as played by Eddie Driscoll. You may want to tell George "E-gor" Chastain about him. He maintains a comprehensive site of horror hosts and Crandall is not included...yet! Here's his site: http://myweb.wvnet.edu/e-gor/tvhorrorhosts/index.html

If you ever get a chance to "stream" these shows online, let us know. Cable access has a maverick charm all its own, love it!

Hello again, ProfStokes and Sally the EmeraldRose! :-*
The management of this board should be commended for having such a cordial welcoming and steering committee. I found the chat board while researching for links for my own DS fansite I'm creating (because dang it, we need a zillion and ONE of them), and before I knew it, ProfStokes was encouraging me to join this board. Both the Prof and EmeraldRose were so nice and chatty with me...hardly a small thing because I was asking questions right and left! ;D
Looking forward to exchanging info, memories, and quips about this glorious TV show that I'm still addicted to. (Yeah, spank my patty, Daddy, I ended the sentence with a preposition. Heh!)
-
I checked out the video and audio clips from your site, Penny...silly stuff, I love it! You and your fellows are truly classic hams. (BTW, that's a compliment. :D )
I'd love to be a cable access host for B-grade movies. What a great job. The best we've managed on our local access, though, is 20-year-olds talking about politics. You'd think we'd have something a little more fun out here in Southern California for local access.
Of course, the "slides" in between the shows keep advertising "help out as a tech volunteer, you'll learn cable access production techniques for free". Maybe I should take that up. Then I will affect a hostile takeover of local cable access...
Okay, so I'm getting ahead of myself. >:D

Heh, heh. I like the way you think. :D Local access programming in my corner of L.A. also reeks.
A big thank you to ProfStokes for her recommendation. MB and I don't care to advertise, and we're not quite so gracious toward search bots, so we rely on word of mouth to bring in new members. And thanks for the kind words, LaurasFires.
Our EmeraldRose made the level of Full Poster, woo hoo!

Thanks LaurasFires! Welcome to the Forums!

I fully understand reticence towards opening up boards and groups too much. Like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.
ProfStokes and I had a nice discussion about favorite plotlines, including the phoenix plotline - ProfStokes encouraged me to make a Wikipedia entry for the phoenix bird underneath the Movies And TV section to include the unusual humanized version of the legend that Laura Collins was. That was kind of cool...THE POWER!!! >:D
Our EmeraldRose made the level of Full Poster, woo hoo!
Congrats to Sally! May I earn that distinction soon as well. :)

I finished listening to Segment 1 last night - you and your partners are most entertaining, and the show was funny and informative.
Thanks so much for sharing the links, I've wondered what folks who put on a cable access horror show like this go through and what kind of energy and dedication is needed.

LOL! I can be a real chatterbox sometimes, yes. (As you may have noticed already, hee hee!)

I listened to segment 1 last night, and it sounds like some folks are having maybe a little much fun. Stop it. There is to be -no- fun. Period.
;)

can you get that station on the Cape Penny?

of course Shilling Shockers reminds me of the Red sox but thats just me >:D

Damn. I enjoy fun.

Jennifer, we are currently not out on the Cape, but hopefully that'll change in the coming months. We do have Wareham on tap for "Wave 3" distribution of the show.

Congrats, PennyDreadful! I live about a half hour outside of Boston. I love stuff like this. I'm also a big fan of Ghoul A Go-Go. I hope I get a chance to see your show.

Sorry to be coming in so late on this thread; alas I only seem to make it over here in fits and starts :'(
That said, congratulations on the horror show! I remember a number of those when I was growing up in NYC -- really miss them. Have never been sure which were local and which were known in other parts of the country, though Creature Features seems to be at least regional. I've bookmarked your blog, etc. cause if I start poking around NOW, I'll NEVER get back over here to post <G>.
Oh to those discussing "M" with Peter Lorre -- I must agree, this is one of those movies you HAVE to see. Remember first seeing it on public TV when I was in Jr High or High School. No gore, no ick, no language and no overt showing of the crimes -- but the way the inferences are done makes it scarier than spelling things out EVER could. Sad thing is it seemed to typecast Peter Lorre for life -- to the best of my knowledge everything he did after that was varients on the weasely little slime.

I can't agree more with your statement!!!!!!!! Midnight, MB and everyone else involved in keeping this board running deserve a HUGE vote of thanks for keeping this board a friendly place for intelligent conversation. I don't have sufficient praise for the day to day work involved in keeping a board like this running -- and especially in keeping it free of unpleasantness, viciousness and generally toxic behaviour. [love7] Moderators who are both WILLING and able to moderate are worth their weight in gold!!
-
OOPS! Serves me right for posting at this hour. I forgot to thank Penny Dreadful MB and anyone else who has posted links for giving us the information to go look at this great stuff.
Mea culpa....... :-[

Well, if you want to see him at his comedic best, just rent the original film version of "Arsenic and Old Lace" It's still a hilarious romp of a film, and his performance is brilliant.
-
Thanks Pansity! We're currently working on consumer versions of the DVDs. In the "Drunk Shadows" episode, we are putting an Easter Egg in the menu screen which will lead to a segment called "Penny Dreadful's Dark Shadows Collection." I'll show the viewers - i.e. "my Dreary Ones" - some of my DS "curios."
"M" is a wonderful movie, and as you said, the subtle images in that film make it both riveting and terrifying. Peter Lorre's monologue at the end of the film still gives me chills.
And a big "HUZZAH!" to MB, Midnite and Dom for making this, hands down, THE BEST DS Board on the net.
