I know that by today's "standards" Halloween is considered "lame." We have seven-year-olds who have parents that let them watch The Walking Dead and play violent games like whatever-gangster where they get to kill people. But when I saw the film in the theater, people were terrified. There was silence at the end and no one moved during the closing credits. People walked out holding each other. I slept with the lights on. My dad told me he saw the original Frankenstein as a teenager and the audience response was the same - people who saw it were afraid to walk home alone. Now we have first-graders who relish in zombies eating people and criminals murdering with parental consent and the kids think it's "fun." My, how the times are a-changing.
