**** NEW DS COMIC BOOK SERIES DEBUTS THIS YEAR

SG shares information from the 7-18 "official press release" from Dynamite Entertainment. The company plans to release "Dark Shadows # 1," the first of its new DS comic book series, in October.

"Television's original reluctant vampire is back! Barnabas Collins is re-adjusting to life under his vampiric curse. Haunted by terrifying dreams of his age-old lover and nemesis, Angelique, and fighting his bloodlust, Barnabas fears that danger lies ahead for all who live at Collinwood. Meanwhile, Barnabas's ally and trusted friend Dr. Julia Hoffman is harboring secrets of her own." DS #1 is "picking up directly where the original daytime episodes left off ((April, 1971)), the new (comics) will bring the familiar residents of Collinwood further into the 1970s, facing threats both old and new."

It is "written by Stuart Manning and drawn by Aaron Campbell, with covers by Campbell and superstar artist Francesco Francavilla (Black: Panther: Man Without Fear, Swamp Thing)."

**** HOUSE OF DS & NIGHT OF DS TO BE RELEASED IN 2012

SG has long reported about the 2 MGM theatrical movies, made while the original DS daytime series was still on the air: "House of Dark Shadows" (HODS) came  to theaters in 1970, and "Night of Dark Shadows" (NODS) followed in general release in 1971.

SG now can announce that plans call for both films to come out on dvd at some time following the expected May 11, 2012 theatrical opening of the new DS movie. This DS starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton is now in production in England (see recent SG Updates and SG print issues).

The release schedule for the dvds is yet to be determined. The dvds are expected to include previously-edited footage..

HODS was a big box office success for MGM, spurring production of NODS. But just before release, studio executives ordered editing out some NODS scenes for "violent content" (1971 standards). The film as released thus seemed disjointed and incomplete. The cut footage was considered lost.

In 1999, the missing footage was located by film historian Darren Gross. It lacked a soundtrack and needed restoration to improve its quality. Most of the original cast have re-recorded their dialogue, and up until his death in 2006, Dan Curtis worked to have the movie restored and released. The effort was never completed.

HODS and NODS both used cast members from the daytime show, whose characters were written out of the daily soap while they filmed on location in and around Lyndhurst Estate in Tarrytown, NY. The actors/actresses usually re-created their TV characters, though some played new characters instead.

SG will continue to announce and report developments for the HODS/NODS' releases.
