Current Talk '05 II / Re: Nancy Barrett and her wacky dream sequences...

I think it's a tie between which was more bizarre--Liz's Leviathan dream, or Jamison/David's dream.  I think the latter was more disturbing because it involved the death of a child, and the subject was handled in the dream in a matter-of-fact way that was far more chilling than the usual melodramatics (which of course we love).

I once heard no less an authority than the MB himself state he could not make head or tail of the LeviaLiz dream!  Shows you just how "out there" the thing was!

Current Talk '05 II / Re: 1991 Series To Be Released On DVD

Is it illegal or impolitic to suggest the obvious solution--folks get the MPI videos and record their own DVDs, if they really need the series in that format?

I have a friend who has a DVD burner.  He made an incredible disc for me from my old SLP tape of "The Devil's Daughter" (co-starring Shelley Winters and Jonathan Frid).  Of course I don't have the training or technical knowledge of the people on this board, but I did notice that the DVD could be freeze-framed or zoomed in, which wasn't possible with the videotape.

Many thanks, Midnite, for the tip about Nimoy's Baggins serenade.  Another sign that truth is stranger (and sicker) than fiction.

And Mark, thanks for that breathtaking account of "the Shat's" brilliant thespianship in reciting the dramatic lyrics of Bernie Taupin.  Wow.

I missed SO MUCH by living abroad for most of the Eighties!

Smooches right back acha!  Happy Hallowe'en!

It was always The Addams Family for me all the way.

Yet another sign of your greatness, my dear.

Friends, I just have to share this link to an incredibly brilliant video presentation of the already legendary-in-its-awfulness Shatner Beatles cover:

http://www.devilducky.com/media/29841/

There's masses of mid 20th century pop culture imagery swirling throughout this masterpiece, but the only tangential reference to DS I could spot (and it's extremely oblique) is the moment when we see the Flying Nun swoop down with Capt Kirk's head in the bonnet.  That reminded me of Castlebee's brilliant "Flying Barnabas" image.

Enjoy!

Thanks, Bloggermeister, for posting that link.  I did spot a typo:  fans know that Lara started on DS in December of 1967, not 1966.

This is completely unrelated, but earlier in the thread I spotted a discussion of Plan 9 from Outer Space.  I have to say that I find Plan 9 far more entertaining than many more supposedly better movies.  It's well worth the price of admission if only for the scenes involving Lugosi, Vampira, and Tor Johnson.  The rest of the movie is off in a world of its own.  It's also one of those films like Rocky Horror Picture Show--you keep finding new realms of oddity upon subsequent viewings.

just my two drachmae...

I'm aghast that not only is Barnabas getting so little of the vote, but none of the vampires from Forever Knight are in the running!

I guess Forever Knight is even more obscure than I thought it was.

I really liked Spike and Drusilla as they originally appeared on Season 2 of BtVS.  I'll spare you my comments on the rest.

Current Talk '05 II / Re: HOUSE OF DS in even more vivid, shocking color!

How thrilling and SHOCKING! (I love it that you used that in the header)

I just viewed the new Dracula A. D.1972 DVD (I'm not even going to attempt to identify who released it since I get so confused by just who is putting what out these days) and, as was the case with the Taste the Blood of Dracula disc release, was thrilled by the vividness of the color and the incredibly pristine image quality.  In the scene with the closeup of the stake thrusting out of the Count's back, the big splotch of gushing Kensington Gore blood looked a psychedelic version of scarlet!  I wonder whether the brilliance of the color has to do with the source materials being in the IB Technicolor process you mentioned.   I noticed on the Criterion DVDs of both Monterey Pop and Gimme Shelter that the colors were exceptionally brilliant (all those lovely flower power clothes practically blister the screen, and my TV set is far from being state of the art) so perhaps it has more to do with how the DVD itself is prepared in the lab.

Thinking of a print of hoDS that has the shimmering iridescence of these recent Hammer Dracula releases is very exciting!  I want to see Grayson Hall in hyper-technicolor!

Thanks again, and Congratulations!

Steve

I know this is a really minor point, but to some of us it MATTERS.

When Vampire Tom first shows up, he's wearing something that looks an awful lot like hospital pajamas.  The wonderful thing about those pjs is how incredibly easily the pants come down... for purely practical convenience for giving injections, taking the patient's temp, etc.  Why, whatever ELSE did you think I meant by "easy"??

But, anyway, I just think the idea of Vampire Tom being buried in his pjs was a hoot!  He obviously ran home and picked up some clothes since he is subsequently seen more normally attired.

Forgive this pointless digression... I have no life...

Hi Penny Dreadful,

Yesterday I finallly got around to looking at those two stills from your show.  A real blast!  I agree with Midnite that you make a very lovely Witch.  I also like the taste in wardrobe shown by the "detective" in the trench coat--looks as if he raided the closet of our own Mr. Roger Collins!

The handcuffed werewolf reminds me of when they put QWolf in "gaol," too.

"Shilling shocker" is such a clever little phrase.  Brilliant!  Obviously, the logical successor to a penny dreadful.

Great stuff, and I wish I could watch!

Best, Steve

What a hoot!  There was an interview with one of the actors from this show in last week's "In Newsweekly"; he's a hunky French-Canadian from Sask (and those of you who know me, know just how partial I am to French-Canadians).  An out gay actor, he frankly admitted that the show is mostly eye candy.

I went to the show's official site and played the trailer; I nearly died when I spotted Tracy Scoggins in the mix, dolled up with what looked like the entire cosmetics department of Filene's!  I noticed that the theme song seems to feature a certain "woo-woo" riff that's very reminiscent of this old show set on coastal Maine...

Unfortunately this show is on the new all-gay "here!" network, and I have yet to meet anyone who actually has "here!" on their cable tier.  So for most of us it's going to remain not "here!" but "way over there! out of sight."
