Robservations #713

It's a good thing Barnabas got to his coffin early today. First he had to tend to Rachel, and then he had to talk to Magda. If he hadn't had to do these things, would he have lain in his coffin for half an hour, waiting for his daytime death?
Magda opened his coffin and saw that he wasn't in it. Was she planning to have a little chat with him if he was? I can't believe he would have welcomed it. He's lying there, counting sheep or bats or something, and suddenly the lid opens and there's Magda standing over him dangling her gigantic earring in his face (not to mention her wig) and he can't go anywhere because he's due to die any second now.
Barnabas gave Rachel another present, and asked her to call him by his first name. If she's not careful, she'll lose her reputation.
Where was Beth's mind today? Couldn't she at least have put the doll in a bag? Instead she carried it like a baby, reminding me of the young woman carrying calla lilies in the play in Stage Door. So, was Beth imagining herself as a mother? As the mother of Quentin's child, perhaps?
Spoiler about the end of the episode...[spoiler]Beth was very careless when she entered the tower room. She had her hands full. Jenny could easily have attacked her and escaped. But I suppose Beth believes she can handle Jenny.[/spoiler]Beth has an air of intelligence which was completely misleading today.

OMG, in the redo, Barnabas took the time to casually place his cloak and cane on the coat rack before heading downstairs (he he still had them on him when he opened the coffin in the previous ep) and then...
he had to tend to Rachel,
...and THEN we're shown the identical sight of daybreak that prompted Barnabas to leave the cottage in #712. So now we know why Barnabas took his sweet time getting to the coffin-- time really does stand still at Collinwood!
and then he had to talk to Magda.
And he offered to see Rachel back to Collinwood!!!
Magda opened his coffin and saw that he wasn't in it. Was she planning to have a little chat with him if he was?
I'm going to guess she had seen him with Rachel and went downstairs to pace a bit (cuz how else did she get down to the basement without passing him?), then checked to see if maybe he had materialized in the coffin while she waited. Or something.
Rachel must be very taken with Barnabas to agree to always wear that big ugly necklace that goes with... nothing.
-
I always think the same thing as you are commenting on in this thread whenever I watch these shows: why on Earth is Barnabas running around in broad daylight? At this point, I simply throw up my hands and remind myself that I watch DS for entertainment, not because it always makes sense.

That big ugly necklace is cool! But I don't suppose Rachel knows that the amulet's shape is an ankh.
-
The charm part of the necklace is identical to the "gold coptic cross" that [spoiler]Cassandra gave to Tony so he could get in to see Stokes,[/spoiler] minus the chain connector. I'll take your word for it that it's an ankh, but the prop staff apparently forgot that this piece which supposedly protects the wearer against witches was once handled by a witch on the show. Actually, the same one that is attacking Rachel, lol.
-
I believe that "coptic cross" was the standard locution for this symbol before the ancient language had been deciphered and we learned that the word written with the image of an ankh is pronounced "ankh."
The Copts were Egyptian Christians and their liturgy and what remains of their spoken language constitute a very late form of the ancient Egyptian language. It was written, I believe, with a form of the Greek alphabet.

Not to split hairs here, but Copts are Egyptian Christians. They still exist. I have a relative by marriage who is from a Coptic Christian family.

all interesting, thanks.

Barnabas! Are you here to save change the future and save David or to start a new life with Rachel?

He DOES tend to forget that, doesn't he? [luv] [90d1]

I've only just realized that early in 1897, Barnabas really had no plans to change history. He intended to observe how Quentin died and why, and take that information back to 1969 to use it with Q's ghost to save the family. It's as if the very idea of changing history was too 'out there' to contemplate, even though he did it himself earlier, and once said "History is always being rewritten."

I, too, thought it was very foolish for Barnabas to still be up for such a long time, getting many interruptions in his quest for his coffin, when the sun was rising. He even offered to escort Rachel home! [snow_shocked] It certainly did seem like time was standing still for a while. [snow_strange] However, I think it was safe for Barnabas to be talking to Magda in the basement, because it was dark and there were no windows that would let the sunshine in. But... I thought he had no choice, and he had to sleep when the sun came up - it was an involuntary response! That's a bit of a discrepancy. [signerror] But I guess if it all made sense, it wouldn't be the Dark Shadows we know and love! [snow_cheesy]
Beth was careless when she came into the front door with the doll. I don't blame Judith for being angry with her. [snow_mad] There might be a milestone warranted here: Was it the first time that Jenny's name was mentioned? If so, here's the milestone. [milestone]
Barnabas had in ingenious plan for Magda to "read" the cards to Judith to tell her where the will was hidden. It was great to see the overjoyed Judith come down the stairs after finding and reading the will! Woman power! [bigok]

Yes.

Great! Thanks for verifying that for me, Midnite! [snow_wink]

I gots to get back into the watching proeject! I really miss it~

I am extremely behind on The Watching Project! [snow_embarrassed] I intend to catch up eventually. [snow_rolleyes] I hope I'll be able to do it before the schedule gets back to normal. [snow_silly] Thanks to TPTB for slowing it down for a while. [clap2]

No worries, EmeraldRose. The slowing down helped me out too. It took a while for me to catch up on the week's eps leading to the start of 1897 since I stopped watching completely during the holidays.
I just wish more people could participate in the discussions. Why should only 10 or 15 of us have all the fun? [snow_happy]
-
Helped me out bigtime as well. Until I read the latest Watching Project schedule, I'd no idea it was going slower than normal. It was only my vacation, and the fact that tourist things tended to close early, giving me time to play with the dvds on the laptop, that enabled me to even get this far. If I'd been farther behind, I might not have caught up till 1897 was over. [sad5]
I've been trying to contaminate people <nudges Julianka7>. But it's so HARD to only watch ONE episode. DS is best watched like Lay's potato chips " Bet you can't watch just one!"

...it's so HARD to only watch ONE episode. DS is best watched like Lay's potato chips " Bet you can't watch just one!"
That's right, Jeannie! I agree. [bigok] I don't have the discipline to just watch one episode at a time. [snow_wink]
But the watching is only part of the problem. [snow_undecided] It takes me a long time for me to write a post about an episode. Sometimes, late at night, especially, I just get too tired to be able to write after reading the robservation and previous posts to refresh my memory about the episode. [snow_sleep]

Hi Sally:
[wavey] Don't know if I will have time to try to do an ep tonight, so it may not be till tomorrow or the next day I try out the one episode only experiment. [snow_cheesy]
Wow, you're ambitious, reading the Robservations and all the previous posts before watching and commenting. I just wing it, watch the episode and comment as it's playing. Sometimes takes a good while, as I tend to pause it while I go off on a tangent on here <G>
I know what you mean about it being hard to write sometimes. That's why I tend to come and go a bit: I do a LOT of writing at work. (we don't even talk about the rewriting I often have to do of other people's information for reports. My pet peeve is MSWs who managed to get a degree without basic analysis and writing skills! [nuts] [scrdy] [82b5] ) Sometimes when I come home the brain is too fried to want to deal with anything more intellectually challenging than a mindless game on Facebook. [snow_blush]
