Current Talk '24 I / John Karlen in HIDDEN FACES
« on: May 28, 2019, 11:13:26 PM »
Howdy! I'm writing an article/possible book on the lost 1969 Soap HIDDEN FACES. I've unearthed reams of fascinating material which will make a great read, but unfortunately photos are very scarce, and I've yet to find a single one of John Karlen in the show. Given he had a fan club and a big following at this point, I'm curious if he discussed the show in any newsletters or if anyone took any off-the-TV set snapshots of him when he appeared, that they'd be willing to share? Thanks!

He only appeared in a few episodes, but it was a fun character, hippie regalia, etc.

Calendar Events / Announcements '13 I / Doctor Franken, anyone?
« on: June 05, 2013, 08:42:53 AM »
I've been trying to track down the 1980 TV movie Doctor Franken, with Robert Vaughn, David Selby and Addison Powell, but am having no luck, even from my usually reliable sources.

Does anyone know where I can score a good copy of this, and barring that, does anyone remember much about it?  I caught the first few mins as a kid but not the rest, and I have no idea how much Selby or Powell appear in it.

Cheers!

I'm happy to announce that after a couple years off the WWW (at least in the realm of running my own site), I've just created a Night of DS blog that will be looser, more wild and wooly, and at least be some place where updates can happen... and where I can post news on other films I'm trying to locate etc.

Should be fun.

Current Talk '08 II / Anyone here have the Chiller channel?
« on: October 21, 2008, 11:16:37 PM »
I'd love to QC the HODS/NODS transfers they're broadcasting, but alas, it's not carried by Time Warner, and none of my friends or family has it.  If you do, I'd love to get a DVD-R or VHS of the broadcasts, so I can find out if the color, sound, and framing are what they should be.  They're broadcasting the masters recently made in HD, which would also be used for a DVD release, and if there's a problem I'd like to let them know before it's too far down the pipeline for correction.... Thanks!

I meant to post this earlier this morning, so apologies if this is a bit late, but I don't have my login info at work...

While there has been a lesbian kiss on another soap and back in the 80's/90's a peck on the cheek for a dying lover, and some rather embarassing grappling on Passions recently, today's ATWT is going to be the first unabashed kiss between two men... A news piece about the kiss ET aired a couple days back and its getting huge hits on youtube, but save yourself for the real thing.

Aired on CBS Friday at 1PM.

What's particularly exciting about this turn of events is that the story has been handled so well. Some were griping a few weeks ago that things were being dragged out. When the character of Noah (Jake Silbermann) was brought into the show, it was known by pretty much everyone that he was brought in to become the first boyfriend for Luke Snyder (Van Hansis), and most thought it would happen instantly. But instead the writers have done an admirable job building up Noah and anchoring him to the characters, so that we've been deeply involved in his story. What makes it even more gripping is that poor Noah is clearly in denial and Silbermann has conveyed his inner torment with some terrific acting, most of it non verbal. A glance here, a longly held look there etc. Just terrific stuff.

For those who aren't familiar with the storyline, essentially Luke is the son of one of the core families on the show. He came out as gay a year ago, in a storyline that was also well-handled and garnered him an emmy nom. Noah entered the show in June, and works with Luke and their mutual friend Maddie at a local TV station as interns. Luke has never had a boyfriend, but has found himself attracted to Noah, who everyone thinks is straight, including himself...But he has started a relationship with Maddie and the sheer intensity and desperation he has shown in trying to hold onto it and force it, has made it clear things are all not what they seem with him. Add a father that's a career military man and an oppressive a-hole to boot and his conflict becomes clear.

Here's a link to last Thursday's episode, with it's jawdropping finale, nicely built up to by the great chemistry between the leads.

If you like that, I highly recommend watching the ones from 35 on to get caught up for today's episode. Great stuff.

And here's the clips from the storyline for today's episode. The kiss happens in the last part...but then you'd miss getting to know some of the reasons why Noah is so repressed.

The story hit the Variety wires about an hour ago, but the story may not be available to non-subscribers.

It also got picked up by the following site:

Things are about to change drastically for DS.

The Grindhouse Film Festival at the New Beverly Cinema will be screening the hard-to-find 1975 vampire film MARY, MARY, BLOODY MARY written by Dark Shadows scribe Malcolm Marmorstein. Should be worth checking out.

These are all prints from Quentin Tarantino's collection and are highly variable, but all are very rarely screened theatrically.

I know there are a few PASSIONS fans amongst us, so I thought you might like to know about an upcoming title of interest I worked on.

Last Saturday I co-moderated an audio commentary (along with Lee Christian and Scott Spiegel) with Juliet Mills for an upcoming release of BEYOND THE DOOR- the 1975 Exorcist-'inspired' possession flick which will be presented in its uncut European 109 min version.

Mills also recorded an on-camera interview covering her career which will also be on the DVD. The commentary focus is primarily on the film, but I did bring up Passions several times throughout both the on-camera and the commentary, so it should be a fun listen.

Mills was an absolute delight, showed not a hint of an ego, and thoroughly charmed everyone in the room.

I'm also working with the disc producers to try to track down the original 4 track stereophonic soundtrack that played at many of the larger venues on original release. Classic ballyhoo-- it was billed as being presented in "QUADROPHONIC POSSESSOUND" in the US, VIBRASOUND in the UK, CIRCUM SOUND in Japan and ELECTROSHOCK SOUND in France.

Regardless of the billing, it was a 4 track magnetic system, with 4 separate channels glued to the print--- Left, Center, Right and Surround and I'm told it was quite effective in its day. Sadly, none of the prints are held by the producer, and a few archives I've inquired at don't have any surviving copies, but I'm still looking and really want to both preserve the original track and have it presented on home video for the first time.

The chat is tonight, 8-11PM EST, 5-8 PST. The powers that be will be in attendance answering questions about upcoming releases and noting consumer interest.

Last year's chat had Warners claim that both HODS and NODS would be out later in 2007. If you want NODS to be the restored version or want significant extras, I urge you to log in to the chat and enthusiastically ask about the restored version etc. and show your support. There's a cueing process throughout the chat, where they indicate 10 people in batches can ask questions. They choose the names, by saying "go" and everyone types 'Yo' and hit send.

There's full info at the link and further info links inside.

The 70th anniversary episode uses the current cast of actors to tell a span of 10 years + behind the scenes history of the show, following the radio-show process and the transition to television. Very ambitious, touching and well-done. It's downloadable from the CBS site itself at:

www.cbs.com/daytime/gl/behind/specials/gl_70/

If you're not a regular viewer of GUIDING LIGHT (which I am not) there's still enough here of interest.
