Title: Did you think Roxanne was pretty?
Post by: IluvBarnabas on June 07, 2008, 01:17:29 AM
I've been racking my brain but I've been unable to understand what it was about Roxanne Drew (at least the one in parallel time) that [spoiler] made Barnabas fall in love with her at first sight. [/spoiler]

She wasn't ugly by any means, she was sort of pretty in a homely way. But I just didn't think she was any raving beauty.

[spoiler] I wonder if the writers were trying to show some emotional growth on Barnabas' part by having him fall for someone who didn't look like or remind him of Josette, but if they were, I don't think they did a very good job. If anything, it only made Barnabas look more shallow, falling in love with another beautiful girl young enough to be his daughter. [/spoiler]

I do think the Roxanne Drew of 1840 was quite lovely though.

So you thought 1970PT Roxanne was pretty, while 1840 Roxanne was beautiful... So you are telling me the hair style and clothes can turn someone from almost homely to quite lovely for you?

By the way yes I think she was pretty, but not comparable to Vicki and Angelique in my opinion

I think Roxanne was very pretty. Even at the time I was not very fond of short hair on women, nevertheless she was still very pretty. just my opinion though.

Strong attraction can be the result of the overall package and not just based on looks.  When I was growing up, I had a friend who was considered plain looking but her personality and wit transcended all that and the guys were always after her.

I didn't mean to imply that women with short hair styles and modest clothing are homely and not beauty material. I know that is not the case. I'm sorry if I gave everyone the wrong impression.

Actually, it was probably Roxanne's personality more than anything that was the problem for me. She just didn't seem to have very much of it.

Apparently, Donna Wandrey who played her was puzzled why she was selected for the part, since she didn't consider herself a knock-out by 1970 standards (especially having short hair when the Marcia Brady look was in).  In the Dark Shadows Companion book, there was mention by the author of Barnabas' apparent infatuation with her in PT1970 wherein he didn't want her offed because he was smitten by her, the author wondering that if he was not smitten by her, she would've been "a gonner."

Oh I agree about the personality.  I thought the character was pretty dull.

By itself, parallel time 1970 Roxanne's personality was indeed dull, but the real time Roxanne that we later meet makes such a wonderful contrast to PT Roxanne that I've got to believe the writers deliberately made PT Roxanne as dull as possible.

I thought it made Barnabas look very weak. Roxanne had no personality.

I liked the evil Roxanne in RT.  I wish we could have seen Barnabas' reaction
when he went back to the room behind the Bookcase when they got back to
1970+1971.  What would he have done with the coffin.

The question was not put well.   "Pretty" refers to appearance.

As for one person being attracted to another, we are individuals, and it's different for everyone.

This is no joke. Roxanne kind of resemble a friend I used to have. This friend also had short red-hair
and pale white skin. When I was watching the 1970 PT and the 1840 Flashback, Roxanne reminded
me of my former friend.

that roxanne spent her first several episodes lying on a slab in a bullett-bra one can see how she attracted b's roving eye.

i think she was something of a missfired attempt to get barnabas past the whole "josette" thing(especially as kls was on her way out the door when she was introduced)and move the story in a new direction.but roxanne ended up being a very poorly developed character in all three of her time periods in my opinion.

as for being "pretty" with her shag hairdo and maxi-skirts she was something of a departure from the fall-wearing,mini-skirted ingenues of the 1960's.she was way more 1970's looking and in her own way quite attractive.but as has been pointed out here victoria and angelique were breathtakingly beautiful as opposed to roxanne's mere "prettiness".

Well, speaking as a woman, I think Donna Wandry was very pretty and her look fit very much into the early 70's look and style.  She was  mysterious and I think that a man could find that interesting.  I loved the shag haircut (used to wear my hair that way) which was suitable for her facial structure.  I really enjoyed her character as Roxanne the vampire!  Also liked when she stood up to Trask.

Yes, with that stylish shag haircut, Roxanne has always reminded me of Jane Fonda in "Klute." [ghost_wink]

I've always thought Roxanne was kind of a knock-out, not at all plain, but more of a stealth beauty - she grows on you. The shag hairdo suited her, and I've always loved red hair.

True, PT Roxanne was dull as dishwater in the personality department, but RT (vampire) Roxanne had quite a bit of spark, IMHO.

The Roxanne of 1840 had an interesting and independent personality before she fell afoul of Angelique. And she really looked lovely the way they dressed her and fixed her hair - like a flame-haired porcelain doll.

I've always wished that if they would have found a way to bring Donna Wandrey back as Roxanne or some other character if the show had ever returned to real time.

Donna Wandrey as Roxanne was pretty in a conventional way.  But she never held my attention like Lara Parker, Grayson Hall, Alexandra Moltke or Joan Bennett did.

on one of the dvd commentaries someone(i forget who.sam hall perhaps?)says that dan curtis cast women beautifully.

i agree.while i love most of the actresses on the show the four mentioned here are to me the most striking of all.

I've been noticing the phenomenon that Martin Short talks about, that actors have bigger heads in proportion to their bodies than most other people.   She's an example.   Head-to-body proportion is on my mind also because in drawing it's something I've often gotten wrong.    Maybe my perceptions are just off.    KLS seems that way to me, too.

Hello Magnus Trask.  I think you're saying that an actors in general have large heads?  I thought that David Ford had a large head in proportion to his body. I don't see it in the other actors.

It's probably worth pointing out that Jonathan Frid has often rhapsodized over how perfect he thought Donna Wandrey's skin was when they worked on DS (though that's not to imply that it still isn't  ;)) and what a beautiful woman she is. And he's never gone on quite similarly about any of the other DS actresses that he worked with - at least not in interviews or public appearances that I'm aware of.

Her SKIN is like porcelain.  I think Donna Wandrey was beautiful back in those days.  I still think time has been VERY kind to her. She still looks great and nowhere near 60.

Off Topic: I am very fair skinned and it helps to stay out of the sun to keep my skin that nice white color I like.  People tell me I am too pale and need to get in the tanning bed.  To which I reply, when you are older and look leather I will still look like young and unscathed by time.  HMMPH [ghost_tongue]  Her skin reminds me of Rose McGowan's (whom I have met in person) and OMG her skin is like truly like porcelain.  It is absolutely goregous.

NO OFFENSIVE to anyone who tans.  It just doesn't work for PALE Scottish/Irish folks like me.  I just burn and that is not attractive at all.

I never thought Angelique or Victoria were ever drop dead beauties.  Angelique's mouth always bothered me and Victoria well no. However, Roxanne IMHO was never all that "pretty" either.  Her character was rather daft too.  Not enough backbone.  To her credit she only appeared in about 32 episodes so I guess she needed more time to develop into her own.  But no Roxanne was not pretty as say my girl KLS or even Liz Stoddard.  Now those two....killers!

Pretty? Yes, I suppose, but the character had nothing appealing about her. 1970PT Roxanne was pretty, but also had about as much personality as a sack of flour.

That's got to be a Southern expression, and I think I know what it means... My father didn't pass along very much of that to us.

Yes it is as far as I know Magnus.  Sorry if I confuse people on this board.  It's basically saying, "TELL IT LIKE IT IS"

Heh. XP

Seriously, though. "Oh, Julia, she's pretty... and she can't talk! I love her!" *cough*

I found the character(s) of Roxanne to be either boring (1970PT) or somewhat annoying (Gerard and Daphne arc). I hold nothing against Donna Wandrey whatsoever, it's just that I found nothing appealing in her characters. That's the writers' fault, though, not hers.

Sorry if I confuse people on this board.

I wouldn't worry, Taeylor. The meaning of such expressions (probably practically any common and/or regional expression) can be found as easily as copying/pasting it into Google.  [ghost_wink]  "Speak the truth and shame the devil" brings up dozens of sites with explanations.

I know it may be a generation thing but what is XP Goober?  LOL  Very true MB.  Isn't technology the greatest.   Although I have never figured out how to copy and paste here.  It doesn't work in the good old easy right click way.  Or it doesn't for me!  Can someone enlighten me?

I had no particular fondness for Donna's characters, agree with others here they were a bit annoying or you know lifeless.  [ghost_tongue] .  But after her participation in the Jamison Selby's Dark Shadows script was that 2-3 years ago in Brooklyn, I found a new respect for her--she had a small but vital and fun part.

Taeylor - Sorry, that's a carry-over from another forum, where it's generally preferred to use text-based emotes as opposed to image-based ones. XD is "died laughing"; cock your head to the left and you'll see it. XP is essentially the same thing, but with the P representing a mouth with the tongue sticking out to indicate general silliness rather than a D for a laughing grin. Extra D's and P's may be added for extra effect; for example, something funny warrants an XD, whereas something hilarious warrants XDDDD.

And that is why I need to remember to use the ghost emotes on here in the future. [ghost_rolleyes]

Oh, and a quick rundown of your other question:

CTRL + C = Copy
CTRL + X = Cut
CTRL + V = Paste

I learned those from a sprite comic tutorial I took last year.

Thanks GOOBER.  I have been trying to get your negative points up.  I don't know why anyone would cure you.  You are a great asset to the board and I love having people here of all ages, backgrounds, etc. YOU just got a curse from me for the help!!  Thanks again.  I am pretty good at computers but haven't been in school in 12 years!  OLD!  LOL JK!

The board won't let you copy, except you can do it by highlighting, then going to "Edit" at the top of the screen, and clicking "copy"; then when you're at the spot you want to paste something into, go to the top, "Edit", and click on "paste" this time.   MB explained this once I think.  All this is for people like me who don't deal with the keyboard much.

Thanks, and it's no trouble. I was thinking about my high cure points earlier. They were beginning to make me feel self-conscious.  [ghost_wub]  Either a lot of people don't know how to use the Karma system properly, or I'm just not very well-liked around here.  [ghost_tongue2] Fresh-baked cookies, anyone?
