Hi Tim,  This is such bad news to hear.    I had no idea that John Karlen even had diabetes. Im glad that he is at home and recovering and hope he continues to do so nicely. My prayers will be with him and I hope that everything will be okay with him.  Thanks for posting the address for sending Get well cards, and thanks for keeping us posted.

I, too, had no idea Karlen was diabetic!  How awful!  As most of you know, my husband, son and I suffer from diabetes (my son is insulin-dependent, my husband and I controlled with pills).  It's a dreadful disease, sometimes very hard to control, and you must be very careful to take care of yourself as stringently as possible.

I will certainly send Mr. Karlen a get-well card, and also express my hope that he is able to bring his illness under tight control.  

Thank you so much for making us aware of this.

You never know.  He might not have known either.  Maybe he got hit with it and became ill.  In any event, I'm hoping he has friends and loved ones who are taking good care of him.  I'm sure his DS pals who live out on the coast, like KLS and Selby, are keeping close tabs on him.
Hoping this is just a minor "glitch" in a long fruitful life.

I am sorry to hear that John Karlen is in the hospital.  I am going to send him a card.  Is he online at all?  If he is, he might like to see this thread and see that he has many fans that care about him.

I certainly wasn't expecting to see this news when I woke up today.

If he's willing to change his ways by giving up alcohol, follow a healthy diet, exercise, take his medication/or insulin injections, have a good support system with friends(crisis sometimes brings families together) then his prognosis should be good.

Let's offer him our best with prayers and well wishes of support.

You're so right about that Carol. In the diabetic center where I work that's all we preach to them about. The ones who follow this advice and come in for regular check-ups do very well. It's unbelievable just how many people have this terrible illness. The scary part is that we see more & more young people every day. Hopefully, they will find a cure for this awful disease very soon.

Acceptance of the disease will be half the battle, tho.

My mother and grandmother both had diabetes and it was hard on my mother to accept the fact that she would have to inject herself, keep strict dietary controls, and to get out of the house for exercise.  Many times she felt like giving up but with constant encouragement, she improved.

Both my brother and I are well aware of the possibilities that either one of us may develop diabetes altho both of us have hypoglycemic tendencies.  Our respective doctors have informed us, tho, that as we age, the low blood sugar may consistently increase with age and that we should monitor it with yearly check-ups.

And that's not a bad idea for all of us to do.
