Title: A Custom Title Contest for '05
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on January 04, 2005, 06:12:13 AM
And, speaking of such awards... I secretly hope that there'll be a custom title competition one day down the road.   [santa_evil]   [santa_kiss]

Thanks for reminding me. We haven't had a custom title competition in a LOOOOONG time, so we're definitely due for one. I'll try to think up something for the not too distant future.  :)

I've thought of something that might prove very interesting:

Over the past few days something has happened on the forum that turned on this icon (http://www.dsboards.com/SMF/Themes/default/images/on2.jpg) several times. It's part of a yet to be explained feature. However, if you've seen it, then you should be able to explain what its appearance means. So, in order to win yourself a custum title you need to explain:The first cousin (who hasn't already won a custom title) to correctly provide both answers in a completely unedited post (and keep in mind that we can easily tell if a post has been edited  ;)) will win. And you'll have until 12am ET on Saturday to post the answer - though, if you've been observant enough, it shouldn't take anywhere near that long for you to come up with the answers.

Oh, and BTW, the icon has been temporarily disabled until after we have a winner or until time runs out, so don't expect to see it in the meantime. [b003]

(* A custom title cannot violate the forum's guidelines or contain any of the forum's censored words. It can't be something that members earn through posting (so no jumping to Full, Senior or God). And it can't be something like Webmaster, Global Moderator, Moderator or Administrator because those postions have already been taken. :D)

I see the icon on the Dark Shadows Forum home page.  I thought that when it is lit up blue, I had new unread messages.

Yes, and no. I think you're thinking of this icon: (http://www.dsboards.com/SMF/Themes/default/images/on.jpg) But this icon: (http://www.dsboards.com/SMF/Themes/default/images/on2.jpg) shows up much less frequently.

However, you're definitely on the right track!  [thumb]

It appears on the main page/index... to indicate a new cousin has joined, perhaps?

Hmmm...it appears on the home page, once you've logged in, to indicate that you've received new "Curses," perhaps?

Because onyx_treasure got so close to posting the correct answers, I've decided to extend the original deadline for 48 hours - and to provide a very big clue:The rest is up to you. You now have until 12am ET Monday to provide the answer.  ;)

This is just a guess, but I think it shows up on the homepage to let everyone know when new pictures are uploaded to the site.

Does it mean someone has opened a new topic since my last visit?

Some of us even did what we did on multiple occasions - though it isn't necessarily true that we all did the same thing - though each of us individually did do the same thing (meaning that I performed an action that would have turned on the icon and that FireRose performed another action that would have also turned on the icon, and though we may have performed different actions, I didn't also do what FireFox did and she didn't also do what I did

This is driving me absolutely crazy.  Are we allowed more than one guess?
After reading and re-reading this puzzling clue, the only action I can think of people doing would be cursing or curing.  That would fulfill the part of the clue that says that two different actions have the same result - turning on the icon.

Is this close to the answer?   ???

Not necessarily a new topic...

Does it mean that someone has responded to a topic in one of the Child Boards (of the main boards - I hope i phrased that okay - LOL)? Because I was just thinking about this and I think a few of us have done that recently. For example, the "Julia, sly minx" topic - which was just recently moved to the Current Talk X child board, had a few responses after it was put there....   ;D

Whoopsies...forgot to answer BOTH inquiries:  ;)

1) It appears when you enter one of the main boards (for example Current Talk) - that has the 'Child Boards' of that board (previous posts from past years) situated above the list of topics of the current board. The icon appears on the left side of each child board's clickable title. {in Current Talk the child boards would be: Polls Archive, then Current Talk I - X (each listed individually)}

2) I believe it means that someone has posted a new response to a topic within one of those Child Boards, and alert you to that fact. And then one can check it out, then mark it as read...and whatnot...I think.   :-    lol

As I said, I was just thinking about this and I think a few of us have done that recently. For example, the "Julia, sly minx" topic - which was just recently moved to the Current Talk X child board, had a few responses after it was put there....hmmm.   ;D

1. It shows up on the Forums' home page

2.  It means that someone has posted a new message within a Child Board.

Folks, we have a winner. Congratulations, Miles!!

Yes, indeed - when I archived all the posts from CT to CT X and from CE/A '05 to CE/A '04 II, the (http://www.dsboards.com/SMF/Themes/default/images/on2.jpg) icon appeared on the home page opposite CT and CE/A '05, respectively, to indicate new posts on their two new child boards (though that was only because the child boards had been newly created - obviously the archived posts weren't actually new). And subsequently, when mscbryk replied to 'cassangelique's "look"' and dom, FireRose, Heather and Julia99 replied to 'Julia, the sly minx *Spoilers, darlings*' on CT X, and FireRose replied to 'a "joke" from barnabas' on CE/A '04 II, it once again appeared on the home page - to indicate posts that were actually new on those child boards. However - and here's where the trick comes in (you know that there's ALWAYS a trick to the custom title contests  [vryevl]) - it's quite possible that not every cousin visting the forum would have seen it. Why? Well, as soon as a new post was made to the parent board (meaning to either CT or CE/A '05), the icon that cousins are much more familiar with: (http://www.dsboards.com/SMF/Themes/default/images/on.jpg) would have immediately replaced it (only leaving that very same icon turned on in front of the actual child board to indicate that a new post had been made to it).

Confused yet? Well, trust me - it's all much simpler than it might appear to be upon first read.  ;)  The bottom line is that the only time cousins will see the (http://www.dsboards.com/SMF/Themes/default/images/on2.jpg) icon is if they're caught up on all the posts made to a parent board but a new post has subsequently been made to at least one of its child boards.

And BTW, MIles - I'll be waiting to hear what custum title you'd like to choose for yourself.  [wink2]

Man, I feel like one of those grown men at baseball games that steal home run balls from little kids.
