In the original outline for ep, Maggie and Sarah did hitchhike and were picked up by some guy in a truck - but none of that made it into the finished show. Who knows why? But it's certainly possible that it would have cost too much to use a truck or part of a truck, even if it was simply shot in the studio with techs shaking the truck like they often did with the cars. And if it cost too much, well, we know DC would have vetoed it.
Well, according to one article, The WB did want a "soap stud," cast as Willie. And unlike other Willies, that does make sense given his character description says he's a former high school football star. (And references to Willie's former glory will be coming up in a not too distant future scene. )
