This is wonderful!  When Selby did his Cambridge session, he had forgotten and left his notes and his glasses behind in the car, so he did everything off-the-cuff.  He was fantastic, and the only thing to be regretted about it was that the Abe-the-Babe picture had been left behind with the notes and the glasses.  Now I finally get to see it, and it's every bit as good as Selby said it was!

Apparently, the announcement was not made to take photos during the reading/performance segment or else it was ignored. Not having attended, I can't comment.

I was at the event (which I made part of a historic site based vacation I took in the area), and to the best of my knowledge NO announcement was made about video or still photography.  Given, I arrived about an hour in (thanks to a careless fool involving me in a fenderbender on the way from Gettysburg to the store).  Since I didn't know whether photography would be allowed, I looked to see what was being permitted and took my cue from what I saw  others in the audience doing in full site of those running the event.  When I saw other people shooting -- and no one asked to put the cameras away --  I assumed it was allowed and took pictures as well.  A lot of them... and posted them and links to my vacation shots to my website. (I was camera happy all weekend as I was getting accustomed to a new camera, as well as visiting a number of historic sites) .

Now I feel very awkward in having posted the shots on my website, since I shot them under the impression that it was permitted.  Is it known for a fact that photography wasn't to be permitted, or is this just an assumption based on the fact that the reading is defined as a performance?  This really disturbs me, since I make it a point to run my site properly, and not stray into copyright infringement.

If no announcement was made, then I wouldn't worry about it. That's the responsibility of the bookstore personnel or Selby's publicist to clarify before he begins.

Since I opened this can of worms, I should probably clean it up. 

Without going into specifics, I had been led to believe by someone in a position to know that Selby was not fond of photographs during the reading/performance segments of his appearances.

I asked for some clarification on this point and received an answer this morning from an absolutely unimpeachable source. Photographs are fine.

Thanks for both your posts MsC -- especially for taking the time and effort to get the straight scoop on the official photo policy and post it here. 

I'm the first to admit I may well have overreacted, but given I wasn't there before the start of the reading, I couldn't be sure -- to my own satisfaction -- that I hadn't accidentally done something that the audience had been asked not to do.   A lot of people in this fandom wouldn't care one way or the other, but my old fashioned ethics won't let me do that  -- it would be both shabby and disrespectful.

That said, I can now happily refer people to the link in my signature to go to the selby review site and enjoy the pictures.

Snicker -- here's a story you might enjoy Lydia.  When I was shooting pics, I was trying to get a shot of the Abe the babe pic, and missed, getting instead the ad on the back of that page as Selby displayed it to the audience.   Check out the pic attached here to see what was on the BACK of the Abe pic!
