Karlan does the opening voice-over. At first I didn't pick up on the fact that it was Karlan. It was kind of cute - his (unWillie-ish) diction and somewhat sinister interpretation was totally distracting (but in a good way - it was "fun").

Did anyone else expect to see Barnabas beat Ned Stewart silly with his cane? Somethiing tells me that if he had, it may have cured Sabrina instantly. But no, Barn had to be diplomatic. Too bad.

Speaking of knocking someone silly, I expected Willie to shake the spirt out of Amy when he grabbed and threatened her at the Old House.

I'm sorry, but the handle of Barn's cane does not resemble a wolf. I kept thinking of how funny it would have sounded to hear Ned exclaim, "Greyhound! Greyhound! She's responding to the sight of a greyhound! My sister must have hit by a bus! And Chris must have been behind the wheel!"

And what's with Sabrina's eye makeup? Is Ned a cosmetologist? Obviously not! That poor girl. You'd think that if Ned had the desire to beautify his dear sister that he would first start with dying her hair back to it's original color.

I loved Roger today. The characters's role was written just as it should have been. And Louis played it to the hilt.

Maggie's hair - very Viki and very nice. A fall?. Now, about those curls when she was "possessed." Are we supposed to believe that they were styled from her own hair? If so, they should have used the same color as Maggie's own hair - at least. But maybe the color difference was for the best as it drove home the fact that this was a possession.

My favorite mystery of the day is who Quentin is trying to have Maggie become? Judith (because of the 'do) was my immediate thought but that makes no sense to me. Jenny perhaps? I also wonder if there is any significance to the fact that Maggie's dress was burned in Liz's bedroom fireplace? I hope they follow up on this. I am dying to know.

I thought for sure that Barn and Willie were going to find Quentin's room. It was moments like this that kept me on the edge of my sofa (and drove me bonkers) as a kid.

I don't believe the attitude Curtis had was meant to be a slight towards the viewers as much as it was the desire to get higher ratings for the show for the moment and thus gain more and more publicity.  In the end, that kind of attention would get him more work.

Nancy,

Good to hear from you. And thanks for your response and confirmation of the facts. Your pragmatism always heals my wounds, lol.

By the way, I was catching up on past posts and came across your post about the J. Frid site update. I visited it and I really enjoyed it. I loved the present day photo of Jon in front of the computer. Also his verbal presentation about how he got the idea to start doing readings while attending a fest. It tickles me to know that he is taking such an active role in his website. I can hear it in his voice that he is enjoying it. I'm so happy for him.

It appears to me that much of the writing was done "as they went along." I'm pretty sure it was stated by Curtis or maybe one of the writers (perhaps in one of the MPI specialty tapes or maybe I heard it at a fest) that they had a "devil may care" attitude toward the continuity and integrity of the show. (Can someone back me up on this? If I misinterpreted what I remember hearing, I'd like to be corrected). And it is an extremely sore point with me because to me that translates into a blatant disrespect for the bulk of the fans, which were "kids," and for the show in general, by its creators.

Honestly, as a child I never noticed anything amiss with the show. I even thought the verbal bloopers were purposely done for "realism." But as an adult I find myself constantly insulted by what they laid down before us and expected us to swallow.

I do feel corny for taking it all so seriously now. And I am constantly haunted by the quote attributed to the MGM executive who told Curtis and his writer (S.H.?) on the movie NODS, in response to the exclamation that cutting 45 (?) minutes from the finished product would ruin the movie. The MGM executive said something to the effect, "Are you forgetting who is actually going to see this movie?" As far as I'm concerned this pretty much appears to be Curtis' attitude from the start of the Barnabas era on.

Dom (who's glad he was a dumb kid back then.)

Connie & Birdie,

I too loved that scene. Barn seemed so modern. I got a big chuckle out of it. Shades of Barn as a dad. I got the same kind of kick out of today's scene where Barn & Maggie were in the great room of the Old House. Barn sat at a table looking through a book and Maggie was sitting like a teenager in the big chair by the fireplace reading. It all looked so "normal". I loved it.

I've come to think that Craig should have been cast as David's older half-brother. The subplots and scenarios could have been delicious! Not to mention endless.

Sweeping generalizations are usually very inaccurate or patently untrue. And vitriolic outbursts like this one, which offers nothing but subjective views tainted by an obviously negative experience, belong on Live Journal or--dare I say it--some unmoderated newsgroup, assuming it's necessary to devote the time to articulating it in the first place. Being anything but an objective commentary, it says an awful lot more about the writer than the video or the individuals on the video.

Well stated, Mark.

Personally, I found the review extremely unprofessional & uninformative. Unfortunately, many nonprofessional (internet) reviewers have a hidden (or not so hidden) agenda.

Then he gets a zinger in, usually at Julia's expense.

Considering the quality of writing at times on the show, I always find myself wanting to kiss the writer's feet when the Stokes character lets nothing slip by him. T. David gets the choicest lines for his Stokes character, second to none (especially in this current storyline).

I'd have to put Mrs. J. in the same category when it comes to consistently good writing for a character.

Stokes was much more convincing/professional.

BUT

Trask was a whole lot more fun to watch.

Hi Adra,

This is a bit off the intent of your subject and perhaps better stated in a pet peeves post but I would like to respond nonetheless on Sabrinas's picture in Chris's humble abode.

I find it totally absurd that the picture of Sabrina would be there at all. I've noticed that on Dark Shadows, 8X10 portraits seem to pop up out of nowhere when needed. Drives me bonkers, it does...

One closing credits set that stands out most in my memory was when they showed a set (perhaps a room in Collinwood - I don't remember which one but I would guess it was the drawing room - may even have been a cemetery shot - I really can't remember) while a storm was raging and they dubbed in the sound of the thunder with the closing theme. That was so awesome and rare that it was the first one that came to mind after reading your query. I believe it may have been the only time this was done in the series but I don't know that as a fact.

Was Keene Curtis the actor who played Daddy Warbucks on the film version of Annie with Anne Reinking?

I think that may have been Albert Finney. (sp?)

Oh my. Connie, you are a riot!

Girl, you should do a book of this stuff and sell it at the next fest.

Fun question, (and easy to answer!)

I'd want to talk to Jesus Christ, Marilyn Monroe, and Florence Ballard.

and going to say that I tried to keep an open mind today. I honestly think Betsy Durkin did a good job! Not great, but not bad enough to warrant the comments.

Glad you brought this up, kuanyin! I've been wanting to start a thread on this but I've barely had the time to watch the show, (never mind getting to my computer).

I've only seen the Betsy eps once before now. I hated the performance. This go-around I promised myself to watch objectively and closely. I agree with you. I think BD is doing a good job.

My turn to climb out on that limb - She is certainly a far better performer than several of the actors that have been (and are currently) on the show.

Fantasy wise, I picture Barn and Laura as a great couple (supernatural or not). I think they'd make a fabulous looking couple (I can just picture them at cocktail parties!). I picture their relationship as being very "Liz & Dick" (Taylor & Burton).

In the context of the show I'd have to go with Josette - mostly for sentimental reasons. Spoiler...

I remember getting extremely emotional (happy in my heart) when it was revealed in one of the parallel times that Barn and Josette had indeed ended up married happily ever after.
