SciFi Wire 44th DS Birthday
« on: June 28, 2010, 12:28:34 AM »
Nice to see SciFi Wire acknowledging the 44th Birthday and putting up the original 1st episode at the website. Hopefully Syfy will bring back the original series.

It's very nice to see that we're not the only ones commemorating the day.  [ghost_wink]  But why, Why, WHY does SyFy have to describe the first ep as "campy" when it sure as hell isn't anything of the kind??!!  [ghost_mad]

I know MB but what are we going to do? jk Will we ever lose the "campy" tag anytime in the near future? Doubtful.

The terrible thing about the campy tag is that it associates DS with a stereotype that isn't true. And worse still, it can easily set up expectations in any potential audience's mind that the Depp/DS film will indeed be campy (which we can only hope with every fiber of our beings that it will not be)!

I agree totally. There was nothing "campy" in the first episode the site uploaded to the article. I am not even sure if this writer or the other writers who use the term ever saw the entire series. It certainly is a stereotype. I don't think Tim Burton or Johnny Depp ever used the word campy in referring to the original show but I could be wrong. I know TB mentioned it had a weird vibe. So at least it is not them spreading the campy term although it will be interesting to see how the DS producers refer to it when they market/promote the movie.

People relentlessly "see" and "hear" what they're expecting to see and hear, rather than what's actually going on in front of them.

Or even any ep.  [ghost_rolleyes]

There are so many different versions of what is 'campy' and what isn't.  What also bugs me is when someone's version of what is 'cheesy' is different from mine!  [ghost_rolleyes]

Ah!  That amazing first episode, simply one of the best.  It's a shame Lela Swift didn't continue using those camera angles for the house throughout the series.  They were extremely effective, as was the lighting.  The black and white helped a lot too!
