OT: Facebook and Windows 95
« on: September 06, 2009, 06:48:20 PM »
Hi Everybody

I recently found out that a friend of mine had posted some pics from this years DS Fest on Facebook and went there and re-activated my account. I was able to view her pics - which was great. :)

Then I got a lot of "Invites" to be added as a Friend from other DS fans and I added those and that was great.

BUT then I found out I can't post any messages - in any way - on Facebook.

I've tried 4 different browsers but not much difference.
The short version of the story - Facebook doesn't like Windows 95!! LOL

So, if you have posted any kind of message on my Facebook webpage, I can't answer it THERE. So, I'm answering it HERE. :)

THANKS for posting there. SORRY I can't answer THERE!! LOL.

Tim

It may be a case that you need a more recent browser than you're using. Microsoft no longer supports Win95 and Win98, so upgrading IE probably isn't much of an option. But you *might* be able to use some version of Firefox or Opera or Google Chrome or Safari. I don't know. But you could check it out.  [ghost_smiley]

I have Windows 98-- on Facebook they keep telling me to update my browser which I imagine costs money whatever it means, and I'm guessing it means that eventually Facebook will be excluding me too.

[ghost_smiley] TIMMERS [ghost_grin] Even if MB's suggestion works, It might be time to break down and install a new operating system anyway.  Windows95? LOL That reminds me of my running AOL 4.0 until one day I tried to log on and got a message telling me that it was no longer supported by Windows. I think AOL was up to their 7 or 8.0 version by then.  [ghost_wink]
Of course your Win95 program probably holds a sentiMENTAL  [ghost_wink] place in your heart, as that would have been the system you ran when You, Dean and I would chat online using those ancient programs like Pow Wow and the others, whos names I can't even remember anymore. [ghost_rolleyes] Ah those were the days.............

Funny you should mention that, Bob.  I had a weird dream last night and Dean in the "chats" was part of it.   [ghost_wacko]

Hi Everyone

Many thanks for the comments and suggestions. The WEIRD thing is I can upload pictures. I can view other people's pictures and messages.

BUT I CAN'T POST A TEXT MESSAGE!!!

Why should I need to upgrade to do that??

I have tried IE 5.5, Opera, Netscape 7 and SlimBrowser and there's not much difference.
I will checkout the other browsers and see if they work.

Ah yes, Bob, I remember those PowWow chats with you and Dean. I remember one chat in particluar when we were very bad boys. But, we are all sworn to secrecy, so that's all I can say about that. :)

It all has to with whether or not your browser supports the code that Facebook uses in their Web scripts to post text. Apparently it's different (read more advanced) than however they allow users to post photos.

I'm also with Bob when it comes to recommending that you might want to consider upgrading your operating system. Though I can understand that that might be costly for you - especially if your current computer's hardware can't support WinXP or Linux - in which case you'd need to buy a whole new system. Maybe you should start saving those pennies.  [ghost_smiley]

Hi Everyone

Yes, MB, if I did get a new computer, most likely my printer and scanner wouldn't work with them. So, if I do get another PC, it will probably be a used computer. :)

But the main thing for me is that I am spending a lot less time on the Internet. I probably average an hour and a half per day on the Internet.

Thanks for all of the advice from everyone.

And that's a good thing because?

Oh, you mean you're doing other things with your time like getting out in the fresh air, reading a good book, going out with friends. Bleh! Those sorts of things are so overrated!  [ghost_tongue2]

ROTFLOL. MB!! :)

I used to spend 4-6 hours on the Internet each day and on top of that play video games. Rise of the Triad was always my favorite.

But, to coin a pharse, the thrill is gone. :)
