When I mentioned the "bizarre home of Charles Delaware Tate," I meant, of course, his home in 1970 (or whenever the present day story line was taking place).

Although my memory of a lot of specifics about storylines is fading alarmingly, my reference to "1849" was a typo for "1840."

So I'm not sure if Flora's home was Rose Cottage, but I think these were two different places.  I remember something about "the old Magruder place," whence I developed the theory that Flora Collins was born Flora Magruder.  I loved the interiors of that home (didn't Desmond live there, too) but can't remember if we ever saw the exterior.  Does anyone remember seeing the exterior?

It was Rose Cottage and yes, Desmond lived there as well.  ;)  They would show the exterior quite often.

Thanks for helping refresh my memory.  I wish I could see these episodes again, but my tapes are in storage.  I have about 3 tapes with me in my apartment, and I popped one in late last night.  In an amazing coincidence, considering what I had posted above about Rose Cottage and "the old Magruder place", the second episode on my tape (which I haven't viewed in at least a couple of years!) was the one were Barnabas discovers where/what Rose Cottage is - he tells Julia, quote, "it's the old Magruder house".

And yes, I clearly remember the exterior of the house, with its white pillars.  But I didn't remember that it was Flora and Desmond's home.  Wish I could put it all together in my mind, but I'd just have to see this entire sequence again.  Something to look forward to at a future date!  (This factored into my conclusion that Flora was a Magruder who married a Collins.  But another explanation for  them living in a house Barnabas refers to in the present day as the "old Magruder house" could be that it was sold to another family (named Magruder) sometime after the events of 1840.  Nevertheless, I do find it curious that Flora Collins is regarded by DS fandom to have been a blood Collins.  Not too likely, since Desmond's last name is Collins.  Unless she bore him out of wedlock.

I was going to come back here today and mention the house on Little Windward Island, though Andre DuPres has done so.

I imagined that house so vividly in my mind because I worked on a story that I never finished that's set there.  I could not accept the exterior shots of the house as truly being Angelique and Sky's home, which the exterior shots showed as a shabby wood shack.  No way!  Somehow, someone goofed and got the wrong shots!

Had anyone mentioned the old caretaker's cottage? Quite popular with psychopaths and pheonix's.

I can't speak for all Shadowphiles, but I've always considered Flora to be an in-law by the mere fact she had a son.  And he was a cousin of Quentins...wonder who her husband was....we never hear about another brother for Quentin and Gabrial.  And the fact that Daniel only had a sister (Millicent) means her husband couldn't have been a cousin to them/nephew to Daniel.  Interesting...

One thing I wonder about her name though is, was she named after Jonathan's mother Flora Frid as a sort of 'tongue-in-cheek' thing by DCP?!  ;)

If this is an example of a shabby wood shack:

Well, if this was in the Hamptons, the owners would refer to it as " our little place out east....."

You're the only other person I know of who made that observation.  I remember posting about it in the past but I don't recall anyone commenting on what I said.  I checked my copy of the DS FAQ recently, and they have a family tree showing Flora Collins AS a Collins (i.e. by birth, not marriage).

I'm enjoying your further speculations but I don't remember the other family connections that well.

I was wondering the same thing after reading the article about the Frid family posted elsewhere.   :)

Regarding my comment about Sky and Angelique's home on Little Windward Island, MB remarked:

That is NOT what I remember.   [confused5]  Are you trying to drive my mind to distraction?   >:(  Remember those scenes when Jeb Hawkes is stalking the house when Carolyn is inside, and leaves a track of Leviathan footprints?  They showed the exterior of the house then, and it was what I would describe as a "shabby wood shack" (well, I may have taken some poetic license ...).

What you show, though is MUCH closer to how I envisioned the house.  But I don't remember seeing it that way on the show.

The abandoned mill used by Petofi in 1897, pretty nice digs, I've always been interested in living in a house that wasn't traditionally a house. Love the era, and the coolest people were always just dropping by.

So true, Arashi - and with a interior decorator like Aristede, the place always looked fashionably gothic!  8)

Ooo, thanks for posting that picture, petofi - and for making it downloadable!  :D

Not to drive this into the ground, but that picture MB posted looks very similar to Rose Cottage.

I've been watching my tape with some of the episodes featureing Rose Cottage.  Was interested to hear Barnabas say "it's on Cumberland Road, just outside Collinsport."

Doesn't it though. Someone at DS definitely had a love of Greek Revival because the Old House, Rose Cottage and Rumson House are all in that style. However, the establishing shots used for the Old House and Rumson House were actual houses - the establishing shots for Rose Cottage were supposedly just the dollhouse disguised to look as if it was an actual house out in the woods.  :D

This really doesn't apply to the Old House because that house was discovered by Dan Curtis when they were up at Lyndhurst shooting SOMETHING, can't remember what, and he got bored and took a walk through the woods.  When he found Spratt House (the Old House) he ran back to get the photographer and had several pics taken w/the thought that *somehow* they'd find a use for them on the show.   :)  Too bad the thing burned down in 1970 as I'd LOVE to see it!   :'(

Is this Rose Cottage?  Sure looks like a doll house to me.

Why would you say it really doesn't apply? DC loved the style of Spratt House (so much so that he was determined to find a use for it on the show) - and he was definitely someone at DS.  [wink2]

Yup - that's Rose Cottage.  :)
