Title: Official Dark Shadows Resurrected Soundtrack!!!
Post by: RachelDrummand on July 21, 2010, 01:58:27 AM
It's here, it's finally here! The revival fans have a definite need to celebrate considering how long we had to wait for this to get released but here it is...

http://www.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm/ID/14150/DARK-SHADOWS-THE-REVIVAL-SERIES-2CD/

I bought my copy today and simply can't wait to get it in the mail!

This is fantastic! I love the music from the '91 series.

Interestingly, I recognize all the pieces the site provides snippets of save the one entitled "Dark Dream". Was that actually ever used on the '91 series? If so, I have completely blocked it out (though, of course, I'm well aware of the original version that was used on the daytime show). If not, then I wonder if the set also includes cues that were composed/reworked for the '91 series but not used?

I had wondered for years why this hadn't been done! GREAT NEWS! Although I need to get the copy of the original music first and so many other DS thing! [ghost_rolleyes]

You know I didn't recognize "Dark Dream" either. Maybe the linear notes will give us some insight there. It was supposedly in the pilot episode but I KNOW I would have remembered it being there.

Unfortunately, the liner notes -- though entertaining & filled with photos -- don't offer specific info regarding the individual tracks, so there's no explanation behind the origins of "Dark Dream."

I don't recognize it from the pilot either (which could be why it follows the pilot's end theme in the running order, as opposed to being sequenced somewhere before it), but it's a great composition nonetheless.

This is the single most exciting piece of news I have received in years!  These are some of the best arrangements EVER made!  How can you beat the orchestral version of Josette's Music Box or the Opening Theme from the pilot?  Simply fantastic!  Thank you for sharing!

I might have to pick this up. I did enjoy the orchestrations in the series. Can't stand that photo of Ben Cross on the cover, though. Not one of the better shots of him as Barnabas.

I agree. They really could have done something different and even included more of the characters. I would have been happy with that classic pic of all of them on the stairs...or one of the Barnabas/Victoria pics even.

Well that's a shame. It would have been nice to have a blurb about each individual track but that's fine. Maybe one of us should write Bob Cobert and get that mystery cleared up. I'm just happy we get a release of the soundtrack at all. Now if only they could provide us with a new dvd release that featured the extra footage, the making of video, the fixed aspect ratio/day to night filtering, etc....and some new interviews would be nice. *sighs* I can dream, can't I? Ideally, I'd just get into a time machine, stop the Gulf War so we'd at least have Season 2. Yes, I would stop the Gulf War just for the continuation of a TV show.

I'd prefer a different picture, too, something featuring more of the cast - but I actually like that picture. The beckoning come hither hand seems to encapsulate the sexuality of Barnabas' attacks, something that was definitely played up on the series. And I love the atmosphere set by all the candles.

If only... But at least the MPI VHS tapes exist...

I know Brian from the Blue Whale Pub (he moderates the DS Revival section). I was told these cds were sold at the fest so I've very surprised this topic hasn't been brought up yet.

I wondered about that - and now I'm pissed to know they were offered at the Fest yet there was no advance mention of them in the SG updates or the Fest flyer. Surely someone in a position to know such things knew that the soundtrack set was being produced.

Interesting - I was just browsing around the screenarchives.com site and not only did a promotion come up with the same picture as is on the cover of the soundtrack:

But this came up on another page:

Uh huh....once again the Revival series gets ignored. That really angers me. I was telling some of my other DS Revival friends that we should have known about this cd set months ago but no...no advance promotion. Nada. A friend of mine stumbled onto it otherwise we probably wouldn't have known about it.

I saw those promos too on the Blue Whale Pub. :)

Thank you!  Love your screenname.  :)

Yes, this release came completely out of nowhere.  I was shocked when I received the email about it last Monday (I'm on Screen Archives' mailing list).  The subject heading was their standard "New & Notable Releases,' so nothing prepared me to open the email and see BEN CROSS as Barnabas!!  I almost fell out of my chair.  lol.

I can't complain, as it made for a terrific surprise -- I just would've thought that there would have been some info out about it prior to the release.  Or rumblings that it was coming.  Or something.

Mysterious Benefactor... there's also one more promo pic from Screen Archives' website, to add to the ones you posted:

By the way, when my order arrived this past Saturday, it contained a 2" x 3.5" magnet promoting the Revival Series CD release.  That's probably only a "while supplies last" kind of thing, but I hope plenty of other fans receive them too, as they make for a cool little piece of memorabilia.

Last Monday -- July 12th.

That first day, they were also offering copies autographed by Bob Cobert, to ship in "late July."  But those must have sold out quickly, because the link was gone from their site within a day.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you to get a magnet.  :)

OK - now I'm really pissed that no announcement was made of the release and that offer. Thanks to the generosity of Midnite, I have Cobert's autograph from back when he appeared at a DS event that I didn't attend. But there may have been many fans of the '91 series who might have liked to have gotten an autographed copy of the soundtrack. But if they weren't lucky enough to read the post on the '91 series' board or to be on the screenarchives.com e-mail list themselves, in all probability they had no idea the offer was even being made. In fact, it's quite possible that people who watch for such things may have bought up copies and not before too long we'll be seeing them sold on eBay for a lot more than what screenarchives.com was offering them as...

I'm pissed too. I would have loved to have an autographed copy! I also hate that the fests seem to be only geared towards the original series. Last year, there was next to NOTHING of the revival. It just really sickens me. Just because it only lasted 12 episodes does not mean it was a failure. There were thousands of fans trying to keep it from getting canceled to no avail. But over and over again, the revival actors are not invited to these fests (even though I've been told different!) I contacted Lysette Anthony and she got back with me saying that she would LOVE to attend another fest...and when is it? That tells me a lot right there.

Yes, I started with the original but the revival is something very special to me. I probably will never attend another fest until the revival starts getting the recognition it deserves. But sadly I doubt that will happen considering the lack of promotion regarding this cd alone. And when the movie finally comes out...the revival will probably end up shoved even further to the back of the line.

Sadly, that's quite possibly true. But the '91 series will always stay alive as long as its loyal fans keep it alive.  [ghost_wink]

And, of course, it doesn't hurt that it runs frequently on Chiller.  [ghost_wink]  Which, of course, makes it the only version of DS that is currently running anywhere. Though that doesn't seem to count for an iota in certain circles...  [ghost_sad]

Uh huh...for that I suppose we should also be thankful. Of course I'll always want more (ie. a version of Josette's music box instead of that plastic piece of junk from the original, more t-shirts, etc etc) But more importantly a proper dvd release. I still wish it had been MPI who handled the revival release instead of MGM.

Yes, I would stop the Gulf War just for the continuation of a TV show.

I'd have stopped that war for many more reasons, like...maybe we would not have entered an unnecessary war in Iraq...

Not to get too political, some of y'all might want to check out the DVD "The Most Dangerous Man in America," which is about the Vietnam war but is relevant, in many ways, to the Gulf War and the Iraq war.

That said, at least we have DS as a constant in our lives with all the turmoil going on around us.

I was at the Fest and if it wasn't for someone showing me the CD I may have never known about its existence. Someone actually had to point to me the table where it could be found. It was odd. It wasn't like the Fest was hiding it but it wasn't promoting it either. On the back of the CD it says the CD was produced by Craig Spaulding and Jim Pierson. So why weren't we provided advance notice especially in light that JP is a co-producer. I was real happy to obtain Mr. Cobert's autograph. He signed both CDs and the insert. What a wonderful person.

I know there have been other instances of a product not being announced as available at the fest and fans missed out an opportunity to get it autographed.  I can't remember the specific instances but I know it's happened so it's not a plot against the 1991 Revival Series. [ghost_tongue2]  Honest.

I understand wanting to see more of what you enjoy in this case the 1991 series.  It is untrue that the actors are not invited to the Fests.  They have attended and I know from my own limited involvement at the fests that the actors don't feel there is enough interest in them to motivate them to attend.  It is a reality that there are more fans of the original show than the Revival.  Obviously, you cater to the market.  It's not a plot. [ghost_wink]

The Revival series is shown on Chiller but I don't see any substantial influx of new fans into the fandom at least in terms of attending the festivals because of the Revival series.  Back when the Revival first aired, it did bring in many new fans which was wonderful.

I'm sorry to see there exists an "Us and Them" in what is already a small fandom and a mentality that there is somehow a plot to play down the Revival series as being an integral part of DS fandom.   [ghost_wub]
Title: Re: Official Dark Shadows Resurrected Soundtrack!!!
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on July 22, 2010, 05:15:17 AM
I can't say that for me it's a case of Us and Them because I'm a fan to varying degrees of all the versions of DS (the lowest on my scale being hoDS - but that's an entirely different discussion). And when it comes to the daytime vs the '91 series I love them both in basically the same way that a parent loves all his/her children. They both have their strengths and their weaknesses and I pretty much refuse to choose.  [ghost_smiley]

That being said, though, there's a difference between simply not mentioning something will be available at the Fest and not mentioning its availability at all. I can accept the possibility that not everything that has always been made available at the Fest has been prepubliciized - but I never recall in all the years I've been involved in DS fandom that a piece of DS merchandise hasn't been announced the minute it becomes available. In fact, more often than not merchandise is announced by TPTB well in advance of its availability and in multiple places. And the fact that there wasn't the slightest peep from TPTB about this soundtrack being released not only seems like a slap in the face to the '91 series' fans, whether intended or not - it's beyond absurd because, even if it might be true that the fans of the '91 series could be a small faction of total DS fandom, their money is just as good as the fans of any other version of DS' money is.  [ghost_wink]

The first I heard about a '91 soundtrack was a quick mention on Saturday by Cobert.  I gave Bette a WTH look before deciding he must be joking.  Was there any other official mention of it during the rest of the Fest?

But the auctions on both days did include what seemed like a fair amount of "OOP" items from that series.

Ooh, a book of Revival Series scripts... now you really have me dreaming!!  Something like that would be amazing

I just looked up the Seinfeld scripts book you mentioned.  It covers seasons 1 & 2 (17 episodes in total), and has a list price of $18.99.  I'd be willing to pay more than that, if necessary, for a collection of the DS: '91 scripts.

That's REALLY bizarre that the release of Bob Cobert's music for the 1991 DS was not mentioned at all by Shadowgram or other Festival Organs.  (I feel as if I'm writing for "Private Eye" now!)  I mean, I'm not that much of a fan of the 1991 show, but I'm interested in the new CD because of my fondness for Bob Cobert's music for the series.  I would expect a lot of other fans who are more focused on the original series would feel the same way.

It must have been a political decision on somebody's part to keep us in the dark about this new release.  Wonder why?  Has somebody out there decided they hate Bob Cobert?

They regularly mention 1991 series actors' participation in new projects so I see it as more directed against Cobert and his fans (if it's directed against anyone) rather than a slap in the face to fans of the 1991 version.  Just my take on it.

I look forward to hearing the new CD.  I wonder whether the "collector's set" of the original series soundtrack cues is still available?  I always thought I would pick it up once the prices went down but then I sort of forgot about it.  It wasn't really reviewed anywhere, was it?

DS fandom can be a very odd terrain at times...

Yes, whereas some could attempt to make a case that it simply seems like a slap to '91 series fans, sadly, there's no question that it comes across as a slap to Cobert, which is very odd given how all the other soundtracks of his DS and Curtis-related music have always been prepublicized.

Delighted to see that new copies of the 8 CD original series score collection ARE still available on Amazon at a nice discount.

I was perturbed to see that apparently Amazon aren't carrying the 1991 soundtrack CD.  Very peculiar.  It only seems to be avalable through the link that was posted at the beginning of this thread.

There are substantial clips available for free listening, which is particularly fantastic since one of my complaints about the technical side of that 1991 TV show was that the score was often so poorly mixed as to be nearly inaudible--you'd just hear a faint tinkle of a piano which seemed to be down the hall and in the "closed off wing," or something that might have been Ima Fly's attempt at a cameo or a string pizzicato...

But, I'm not supposed to be COMPLAINING about the deficiencies of that show here... It's great news for ALL fans that this set is now available!  Yes, fans, there are TWO CDs of this amazing music available!  As far as I am concerned the music may have been in many ways the best side of the entire project.  (Although I will always love the moment when Barbara Steele informs Jean Simmons that "the professor has been a bit DOTTY these days.)

It's a slap in the face to BOTH then. As you just said, all of his previous music for the original was released. I think it has more to do with it being the revival and TPTB simply assuming that the fans no longer care about the revival soundtrack. I can imagine they have made a limited number of copies which is why I bought my copy right away.

Gosh wouldn't that just be delightful? In addition to the scripts, it could be filled with pictures, interviews from the cast/writers/etc... *sighs* It also saddens me that the comic book series didn't last that long. I bought the first volume but was told that the books take place during the 6 months Barnabas is getting treatment. I think it would have been better to continue on with where the series ended, that way we would have had something.

Barbara Steele's "Countess" du Pres was obviously the stylish Madam of a very exclusive bordello in Paris.  Steele's line readings in the part make me sca-REAM (oh dom, beloved, where ARE you?).

Listening to the free clips on the site for this set made me realize how much music Cobert either composed originally for the new series or re-scored so extensively it might as well be a fresh composition.  I look forward to hearing it.

Cobert composed quite a bit of totally new music for the '91 series. Much of it is some of his best work IMHO, which is the main reason why I feel the apparent slight against the soundtrack is so not deserved....

Taeylor, I keep hearing that it wasn't in the Shadowgram.

I find it shocking that no one was made aware of this at the fest.  It has the potential to be such a big seller within the fandom, especially since the music is so familiar to fans of all incarnations of Dark Shadows.

To quote the old Hollywood wise-crack, "This wasn't released-- it escaped!"

Fantastic CD, though.

This is slightly off topic, but since it's about DS related music, I don't think it's too out of place here as a quick aside.  Whether you listen to the Big Finish CDs or not, the soundtrack to the dramatic readings series has been released.  Many of the pieces use origial DS themes as their basis and expand upon them.  One piece from Skinwalkers is a reinterpreted version of Quentin's Theme.

This is something that should have been released 15 years ago.

I agree with you BUT it's fairly timely when compared to the soundtrack that came out a few years ago. Logan's Run, the TV series aired in '77? or was it '78? They released a soundtrack for it a few years back!!!  It ran about the same amount of time as DS '91- 14 eps in this case. 11 that aired for sure, and up to 3 that did not. There's a debate about the "unaired" ones.

Got mine today...what a wonderful soundtrack, great music and orchestrations and recording.  Brought back a lot of memories from the 91 series. (Now I'm gonna have to watch it again!)

This is one of the best, (if not the best), Dark Shadows music collections, imo.  For anyone who loves Josette's Music Box, this is a must.  I had no idea that it was used so frequently in so many different arrangements.  The new arrangements of the classic tunes and the AMAZING new recordings are breathtaking.  This is Bob Cobert at his finest.  This CD collection is an absolute dream come true.  I would recommend it to ALL DS fans.  Whether you are a fan of the '91 series or not, this collection is a must for any Dark Shadows music lover.

As an aside, the arrangements of the DS theme used in the pilot are SUPERB.  They should have been kept for the whole run.

Where did you hear that, Doctor? This is the first time I've heard anything about unaired episodes! Do you have anymore info...like what they were about? Anything?

VictoriaWinters1991, did you mean to edit Logan's Run out of the Doctor and K9's quote?

Yes. When I quote something, the html gets a tad confusing when I see the person's name there. Sorry about that. I only wanted to address the question of the rumor of 3 unaired '91 episodes.

Not a problem, but according to his original quote, it seems he was speaking about 3 unaired eps of Logan's Run.

There are no unaired eps of the '91 series.

I finally got around to watching DEAD OF NIGHT & TRILOGY OF TERROR! It seems to me that BOB lifted some music from these movies for the '91 DS! I know for sure one sting was.  When Elizabeth finds the rat and the tambourine goes crazy and the flute roars is directly from TOT: Bobby!  I also felt a lot of the oboe sounding music was lifted from those movies.  Does anyone recognize any of the music from these movies showing up in the Revival?  Of course we all know Bob and Dan recycled DS music for many movies  but I didn't realize he had used that sting with the rat in another movie.   I hope to get this when I can.

I was perturbed to see that apparently Amazon aren't carrying the 1991 soundtrack CD.  Very peculiar.  It only seems to be avalable through the link that was posted at the beginning of this thread.

The back of the CD says it is sold exclusively at ScreenArchives.com.

Yes, I was referring to Logan's Run. Allegedly, Turnabout, Night Terrors, and Stargate were not aired.  I had Turnabout on VHS, so I know that aired SOMEWHERE, but it may have been Canada. Someone else told me that one she had seen Turnabout as well, but she lived in Buffalo. Again, maybe a Canadian broadcast. There are often disputes over unaired eps.  Planet of the Apes SUPPOSEDLY did not air The Liberator, but I saw it, AND a friend who kept a diary of the show had an entry for it complete with an accurrate plot summary and cast list. But to emphasize, no episodes of '91 DS were unaired.

I finally got a chance to sit down and listen to the soundtrack all the way through. Wow - it's amazingly like reliving the entire '91 series in slightly more than 2 hours. And I'm really looking forward to listening to the whole thing all the way through again - but not tonight.  [ghost_wink]

By the way, when my order arrived this past Saturday, it contained a 2" x 3.5" magnet promoting the Revival Series CD release.  That's probably only a "while supplies last" kind of thing, but I hope plenty of other fans receive them too, as they make for a cool little piece of memorabilia.

I received one - and it's sitting on my media center right now.

The back of the CD says it is sold exclusively at ScreenArchives.com.

I saw that too - but doing a Google search for the soundtrack brings up other Web sites that are also offering it - and as I said before, for higher prices than screenarchives.com. But perhaps they're actually not selling it directly themselves but getting it from screenarchives.com and then reselling it - hence the more expensive prices...

MB, in regards to the other sites selling it, I think that is probably right.

There must have been some exclusive deal with SAE in regards to this project.  And while I am happy to own this awesome soundtrack which I have wanted for years, I would have liked to have seen it get more distribution.  But, we have it now and it is available to those who know about it, so that is what really matters.  Now we just need to get more people to know about it!   [ghost_smiley]

I, too, received a magnet.  It is on the fridge!  Now I have Dark Shadows in the living room, bedroom, and kitchen!

I see mention here of Trilogy of Terror and wonder whether anyone ever saw Trilogy of Terror 2, in the 1990s.  Geraint Wyn Davies was in it, and there was a sequel to the infamous "Zuni Fetish Doll" episode of the original ToT.

I totally missed even the existence of this sequel production, but a friend told me about it recently and I looked it up.  Sounds potentially interesting.

I saw the Trilogy of Terror sequel way back when. Lysette Anthony is pretty good in the stories; in the "Amelia" sequel, she plays the sister of Karen Black's character, if I remember right...but otherwise, it's exactly the same story, down to the detail; more a remake than a sequel, really.

The most disturbing story is the second one, I believe it is, where the little dead kid....

[spoiler]returns as a demon to avenge himself on his mother (Anthony).[/spoiler]

Intriguing.  Please elaborate!
Do you mean music was taken from the original Trilogy and used in DS 91 or from 91 into Trilogy 2?

Cobert did re-vise and re-record cues he wrote soley for NODS for the 91 series, so it wouldn't surprise me if he did it elsewhere, especially given how fast the scoring was done and how much music an ep of DS devours.

Darren the one that stood out completely was the music when Elizabeth finds the rat under Victoria's pillow with the flute (?) and the tambourine!  This is taken from Bobby in the Dead of Night trilogy, the original one not the Lysette one.  Sorry for any confusion.  It seemed to me a lot of the music from TOT and DON was lifted and re recorded for DS 1991!  I will have to watch them again and try to focus on what was lifted as I have only watched TOT and DON once.  A lot of the oboe stuff sounds like it's from 1991.  I am pretty sure I am right because I obsessively watched the 1991 series over and over and over the summer after it went off. My parents actually made me quite because I was too obsessed they said.  LOL  I guess they were right.  I can't count how many times I have seen the 1991 series! Having recently watched The Norliss Tapes I think I heard a lot of music lifted from that show as well.

I got mine yesterday, or rather, it was waiting for me when I returned from vacation. It had been sitting there for some time, judging from how much mail was piled on top of it. I didn't get the magnet :( but I loved the music! I've not heard the last half of the second disk yet, though.

I agree with the concensus that seems to be growing on this thread; the cuts are manly reworking familiar pieces, but they are done well and are effective. It's refreshing to have this familiar tie to the original. With all new players, it serves as a reminder that this is DS.

For those who might be interested, Cobert released a CD entitled The Night Stalker & Other Classic Thrillers which featured music from many of the productions that are being discussed in this topic.  From the 2001 Fest flyer announcement (yes, it was actually promoted in the Fest flyer - imagine that - but I'm not bitter - no, not at all! [ghost_undecided]):

The new compact disc features composer Robert Cobert's original soundtrack music to 10 classic Dan Curtis productions, including material from the 1991 DS (available for the first time), The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, the motion picture Burnt Offerings and the television films The Night Stalker, Trilogy of Terror, The Night Strangler, Dead Of Night and Curse Of The Black Widow.

Also, here are two Web sites that give more detailed info about the CD, including track info (and a review): SoundtrackNet : The Night Stalker and Other Classic Thrillers Soundtrack (http://www.soundtrack.net/albums/database/?id=2530) and Night Stalker And Other Thrill Night Stalker And Other Classic Thrillers Soundtrack CD (http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/1044751/a/Night+Stalker+And+Other+Classic+Thrillers.htm)

Amazon does have the CD listed - but it's available there from other sellers who are charging more than $15 (one is charging $39.99!) and the Varese Sarabande Web site brings up no results whatsoever (which leads one to believe they've discontinued selling it altogether) - but it does come up on other sites (like Walmart's) for prices around $16. But whether or not they still have copies in stock is anyone's guess...
