I think I can safely say that at least I, and maybe my family, will be going next year. I hated missing this year after going the past three years, but I had a date conflict. So we'll see what happens.

I am truly hoping that 2010 will be my year! I would love to spend a week and half in California site seeing and then travel to fest! If all goes well I will go to that Fest, if not 2011 will be a better shot because of it being hopefully in NYC!

Rumor has it that both 2010 and 2011 will be in CA to make it easier to focus on the Depp/DS film, which will hopefully be much further along by then than it is now.

2 years in a row in CA makes up for the 2 years in a row that the fest was on the east coast. i hope they mix it up a bit and have the 2011 fest in hollywood instead of burbank but either way its great news for me.

And where the hell does it leave us East Coasters????? Come on, now! If they're gonna pull that, they're risking losing a lot of support from fans on the East, especially from the NYC area. Personally I've always wondered why DSF hasn't tried to split the difference and hold an event in Chicago! That way the Midwest can get in on the action too.
An ideal solution would be to hold two small events on each coast the year the Burton-Depp flick is released.

Keep in mind that I said it was a rumor, so there's no need to get excited or depressed just yet. Although, unlike many Fest rumors, given the Depp/DS film, it does make some sense. And it's already happened more than once that the Fest has been held on the East Coast for two consecutive years. '03 (Brooklyn) and '04 (Tarrytown) comes to mind, as does '06 (Brooklyn) and '07 (Tarrytown). Given that, having two consecutive years on the West Coast, if it does indeed happen, wouldn't be unfair.

i remember we on the west coast being just as upset about the fest being on the east coast 2 years in a row. after 2011 i hope the festival reverts back to alternating between east + west coast every year. back in the 80s i remember 2 festivals a year. 1 in new york and 1 in los angeles.

Don't forget us poor, lonely, forgotten midwesterners who always get stuck with the big expenses if we would like to go no matter which coast it's held on. That's why I went to just one, and only because I happened to be in New York that day.

Unless I am mistaken, I believe I was the first person to post about the rumor (on a different thread) of the next two festivals being in Burbank in order to accomodate the Depp/Burton film's production and release. I heard this at the festival last week but I did not hear it from Jim Pierson, so it most certainly qualifies as only a rumor. As someone else pointed out, it does make sense from the movie's point of view.
As far as having the fest in a central location, I can tell you that Jim has told me that it is always on the coasts in order to accomodate the actors and to save on Jim's expense of flying everyone to a central location, since most of the stars live on the coasts. Since I started going in 1999, all the fests have been in the Los Angeles area (L.A., Anaheim, Hollywood, Burbank) or what we call the greater New York or NY metropolitan area (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Tarrytown, Newark).
I think it's all about expense and accomodating the stars, although I pray Jim never has it in Newark again. (For my reasons, see my post on the recent Festival thread).

I live relatively close to LA so I selfishly would love having the fest here the next two years. But, if it's expenses of flying actors out that is the impediment to having it more centrally located, why don't they just raise the cost of the fest ticket? Personally, I think $30 is dirt cheap. Of course, there's the expenses of food and hotel.. but still.. I can't think ponying up, say, an extra 10 or 15 dollars would make much difference to the ability for a person to attend.

Yes, absolutely, that's the reason the Fests are held in NY or in SoCal. That's where the actors live. In California, especially, it allows us to have in "drop in" guests who come in for a day or for the afternoon but don't have to commit to travel and several days away from home.

That wasn't Jim. Dale Clark ran the two Dallas Dark Shadows conventions. Jim wasn't even chair of the Festival at that time; Maria Barbosa was.

thanks for the correction but i thought i have a video of at least 1 convention held in dallas where jim is announcing the guests as they arrive for a q+a session. perhaps there was a later dallas convention with jim involved?

I believe Jim was involved in all those Dallas conventions as a committee member but it was the Los Angeles-based Maria Barbosa who was the fest chairman.
