Title: Worst Hair on DS?
Post by: Julia99 on May 30, 2003, 12:46:13 AM
Okay. . the departure of Sabrina's gray hair and the arrival of her short short wig begs the question ..who had the worse hair on DS?? My thoughts go to Sabrina of course, Bruno/Aristede, Petofi, Samantha's ringlettes weren't too hot, when Elizabeth wore the bow was bad-overall she had good hair. . other votes. .i know  I must be missing some significant bad hair days. .  :D

If you want a guy's POV (and I suspect you won't once you see my answer), I think Julia's present hair was the absolute worst on DS. If any woman I know ever had to leave the house with her hair looking as bad as Julia's did in episodes #957 & #958, I think it's pretty much a certainly she would have seriously contemplated suicide rather than leave the house! i'd say Petofi for a wig and Bruno for real!

I don't care for Julia's present hairstyle, either.  As for Petofi and Bruno, I would add Barnabas' spikey doo.  I just can't see Barnabas using Dippity Doo every morning and without the benefit of a mirror.

"Dippity Doo" - LOL

The absolute worst hair for me has always been Sabrina's bad wig.  It wasn't that bad today, but as time goes by it seems like it is just sitting on top of her head and off to the side.  Always drove me crazy.  [crazd]

Bruno and Vangelique are definitely contenders, and possibly 1840 Roxanne and Julia (occasionally.)

I always thought Cassandra's wig was on the verge of tumbling to the floor every time I saw it...  it was not an attractive hairpiece.

I'll have to agree with this one.  I didn't really consider it a hairdo the other day.  I thought perhaps she was sleeping in the chair all night and that's what she ended up with!

LOL!!  I agree.  It always looked as if it was getting ready to "crawl" away somewhere.

For the males it's a toss up between Count Petofi's rug and Aristede's higher than heaven hairdo. I wonder how many cans of Aqua Net they had to use to get his hair that high?[92a2]

Also didn't  care too much for Amanda's lopsided ponytail.

What's up with Julia's hair these days?  It looked so nice in the beginning of this storyline but now it looks like it needs a good trim.  Perhaps this is when she decided to let it grow out because I think she wears it longer in the next storyline.    And any woman can tell you that there is just nothing worse than that "in between stage" of a hairstyle when you're trying to grow it out.

I also noticed how pale she's been looking lately, very tired or stressed out.

Julia's hair has been looking rough in the last couple episodes.  Let's face it, there was a lot of bad hair on this show:  Bruno, Sabrina (both before *and* after), Charity Trask's original 'do, Angelique's Swiss Miss 1840's look, Petofi's mop, Maggie's upsweep that she's currently wearing, Liz's helmet hair, Mrs. Johnson's 'widowed auntie' look and on and on...

I can't decide which was the worst!

I'm bummed that nobody has mentioned my honey, Buzz Hackett, here.  How could you neglect that majestic mess o' leather and hairgrease?  Oh, how quickly they forget.

Buzz's mop looks as if he attempted to wash it in beer, failed to rinse properly, and then dumped half a tube of Brylcreem in it and pushed the SPIN button.

Still, he's all man, and all mine!

Vrooming away in a cloud of bikerdust,

Again I'm going to have to say it's Sabrina's "mock football helmet" hair do.  That's really stylish.......NOT.

First of all - from Mrs. J to Count Petofi - all the wigs stink - IMO of course.

As to bad real life hair - as much as I love the guy, Karlen just did not have the body in his wispy locks to pull off those longer late 60's early 70's hair styles.  When he re-appeared at Collinwood the other day I kept having the urge to find a pair of scissors.

I agree about Grayson too.  Going from extremely short to mid-length is a bear. I would think that was especailly true back in the days when you weren't supposed to have one hair out of place.  I'm going through it now but when it looks extra-crappy to me it probably looks like I'm just sporting a kooky new style to the general public.  That's what I call progress!  ;)

Steve--was she moonlighting during this period or something?   ???She quickly went from ultrachic extraordinaire with the drop waist dresses to the ugly suits now and longer hair. .getting ready for PT Hoffman's ponytale/bun thing?  Or was it cuz DC always preferred her hair longer?  He slapped a wig on her whenever he could it seems. . . :P

Hi Julia, she may have gotten caught up in the planning frenzy around the movie, which was about to go into production at this time.  Sam and Gordon wrote it and councils-of-war tended to happen at the Halls apt because it was convenient and, of course, huge.

I think she grew her hair out longer to accommodate the layered-hairpiece look they gave her for the movie, which then continued on for the show.

Well, yes.

But Jenny was Crazy.....and having ones hair styled with an eggbeater sort of goes with the stereotype.  Sabrina's wig was supposed to be an improvement.   [huhb]

And I can't imagine WHAT Bruno's hair was in aid of!  [sure]

OMG!!  You're right!!!  How could I forget that hairdo!!!  That was the world's worst out of all of them, LOL!!!    Poor Jenny beats them all out!   It reminded me of the first time I had gotten a perm years ago!   Yeesh!!  Never again!!

Well, at long last I do believe that mystery has finally been solved. I have it on good authority ([wink2]) that Verne Caruso's inspiration for Julia's HODS 'do came from this Mardi Gras reveler:

(Another great search engine find (see the Cheap insufferable pig day thread on CE/A '03) that I came across quite by accident while looking for something entirely different - but one which I've been saving, just waiting for an opportunity such as this to present itself! (Though it took me longer to remember where I'd put this than it took me to put together everything for CIPD! [lghy]) So, thanks, Midnite - I owe you one! ;))

I think the more difficult question would be - who has good hair on DS right now? Anybody? Everyone's hair looked bad in 1970. I cringe every time I see Jeb Hawkes' mop top because that's pretty much what my hair looked like in the 70's too (except for the color). What were we thinking???

Crazy Jenny

Actually, I kinda got use to Crazy Jenny's do.  It was so, well, so '80's.  She probably coulda gotten a recording contract had she been around ninety years later.  Can't you just see her video of Crazy Girls Just Wanna Have Fun?

The one do that really bugs my mousse is when Liz starts wearing those gull-darn bows.  She looked good in her original beehive, all regal and such, but when she got her 60's go-go bob, she looked just as nice in a well-since-I'm-no-longer-imprisoned-in-Collinwood-I-might-as-well-go-Goldie-Hawn-in-my-clothing style.  So why did she just hafta ruin the new look but wearing those bows?  Little Lulu looked hipper.

:-[Well, Dr. Lang, we get "too soon old and too late smart" as my Dad used to tell me. The '70's were pretty bad hairwise, but I wasn't real fond of the '60's either. I guess each decade has its style. My goodness! Have you seen some of the "do's" today?? Check out any mall on a Friday night and DS starts to look good!!

I swear every girl in my daughter's high school wears her hair the same way....long, parted in the middle, pulled back into a twisted ponytail, held with a scrunchie.  EVERY SINGLE ONE of them.  When they let their hair down, they look exactly like every girl in my 1971 high school yearbook.

There is nothing new under the sun.

Well, as was pointed out, Crazy Jenny was supposed to be crazy so the hair fit the character and was appropriate. Same thing with Davenport. The guy is supposed to be a zombie. It's not like most corpses look too nice for too long.

I think I would have to nominate Bruno "I got a set of hot rollers for Christmas" Hess.

Forgot to mention that Irene Hamalain did the hair on DS until sometime in 1970, and she did sometimes get a mention in the credits.  There are some funny pictures of her in the various PomPress books.  Darling Marie Wallace charitably described Irene as a rather "fussy" woman.

I'm blocking on the name of the gracious lady who took over after Irene left, but she came to one of Jonathan's readings in Long Island, and reminded him of that "Madison Avenue haircut" she used to give him, netting a big smile from him in response.  I think there is a photo of her on the Dee Kearney's pages in Mr. Juggins' DS FAQ site.

That would be Edith Tilles, who also did the hair on NODS (which I'd completely forgotten about until I noticed her name the other day when I was looking up who'd been the hairdresser on HODS ;)).

Julia's hair always looked good in the beginning of the show (even with the combed back page boy look) until they changed hairdresser to Edith Tilles.  Grayson's finely chisled face really needed softening around it to frame it nicely.

I was watching 'Play Misty For Me' and found it amusing that Donna Mill's hairdo reminded me so much of Roxanne's.  I think that style was called the 'paper boy' haircut if memory serves me correctly.

i quess but Sabrina [spoiler]doesn't try to kill people.[/spoiler] i think she just went into a catatonic state and came out of it sane and curable while jenny [spoiler]went into a psychotic state. i doubt having a husband ran off would make one break totally out of
reality maybe post partum depression would.[/spoiler] Jenny's problem seems more deep rooted than this and i doubt she is curable.

Has anyone noticed the odd strand on the head of Chris Jennings?  He always has this odd piece of hair that looks like it should go up or down but does niether.  It's just out of place ready to poke him in the eye or something.
Personally, I find his hair the most annoying.

I beg to differ: with that face, voice and bod, Chris (Briscoe) could be wearing the Sabrina fright wig and still be hot! Hubba, hubba... lend me a comb... I'll take care of that odd strand of hair....

Bruno hands down. And I know Angelique didn't want to give herself away by appearing as she did in the 18the century, but I wasn't crazy with the black wig she wore when she was passing herself off as Cassandra.

Sabrina's, Bruno's, Julia's (until she grew it long near the end of the series, then it looked really nice), Carolyn's (when she ironed it later in the series), Maggie's blond wig, Petofi's, Barnabas' (those bangs were ridiculous looking-period!  I always liked it when Jonathan got his hair cut and it was too short for the spikes), Vicki's in the beginning, w/that stupid extension.  Can't think of anymore, but then, isn't this enough, LOL!  ;)
