The end is near!
Penny Dreadful showrunner John Logan teases surprising season finale (http://www.ew.com/article/2015/07/02/penny-dreadful-showrunner-john-logan-teases-surprising-season-finale)
I was not at all disappointed with this season. I finally caught up to await the season finale which ought to be quite a spectacle. I wish I could remember which episode, I thin it was the last to date that had musical ques very reminiscent to Cobert's DS cues and it was totally awesome, it was like watching a 2014 series version with Eva as Vicki searching down a hallway. It made me giddy.
I've very much enjoyed SRB's performance as Lyle as well. There is a gun scene between Ethan and Lyle that is flawless and cute and somewhat touching. Gothick, I wish I could have watched this with you, it would be the only improvement I could make to it.
I think all the performances are award worthy.

dom, I would love to screen Penny Dreadful with you! The show is such fun.
A friend sent me this Tumblr link--it is a brief exposition on the resemblance of Witch Priestess Evelyn Poole's delightfully cozy home to our own dear house...

This link is spoilered for those who haven't seen the finale yet:
'Penny Dreadful' Season 2 finale: Vanessa loses her family (http://www.zap2it.com/blogs/penny_dreadful_season_2_finale_vanessa_loses_her_family-2015-07)
A poignant close to an excellent season! I fully expect to see Prof. Lyle's new slogan on T-shirts everywhere.

I get to see the finale tomorrow - I am very excited about it!
I love the trend toward these short 8 episode seasons on cable. I also like the summer and winter season idea too.
Thanks for hiding the spoiler, MB.

And the Emmy doesn't go to...
...any Penny Dreadful Actors.
The series picked up three creative nods, one for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup, one for Outstanding Music Composition and one for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.
-
Loved the finale by the way. It did have a few moments of weakness/predictability/and something else lacking I can't find the word for, but it still rang my chimes. I think the most surprising thing is that I ended up liking Frankenstein's monster - that makes for a good season for me. Now to wait patiently for season three. Can anyone say, "ghost ship"?
-
And the Emmy doesn't go to...

Boo! Hiss! But I'm not surprised - genre shows like PD very rarely get acting nods from mainstream groups like the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. They tend to garner nods from genre groups - and PD has already won awards from several of those for acting (Eva Green, Rory Kinnear), best show, and the creative categories.
-
It really is superb.

Penny Dreadful Season 3: Patti LuPone Returns (But There's a Huge Twist) (http://tvline.com/2015/09/01/penny-dreadful-season-3-patti-lupone-new-character-returning/)
-
I've read elsewhere that she'd be returning as another character but I've resisted the details. I don't even know if they've been 'printed'. I'm trying to resist all spoilers for the new season for all my shows.
-
The article does say who her character will be, but just knowing that doesn't really spoil anything...
-
For anyone who's been waiting, I checked Amazon last night and the PD season 2 DVD set is up for pre-order now. Release date scheduled for Oct. 6. I have put dibs on one for myself because I am really looking forward to seeing these.

-
My DVDs arrived and I saved several dollars on the posted price from the pre-order. I am really enjoying these shows. Haven't gotten to any of the extras yet. They include a Round Table with Reeve Carney, episode production vlogs, and something called "A History of the Occult" which might be a PDF.

I just got the dvd and am two episodes in...
I'm really enjoying it. no "sophomore slump". it was so over the top from the outset they didn't fall into the trap of "upping the ante" for season two.
they are really putting eva green through the mill. [hall_shocked]
-
I just finished the season...
it was excellent. I actually think it was stronger than season one. the narrative was tighter, less all over the place. and words cannot describe the majesty that is Helen McCrory. her performance was stunning. she really upped the ante.
I am very sorry to see her go.
my only slight reservation was Vannessa was a bit victimized (not that Green didn't knock it out of the park) and her story sort of overshadowed some of the others. Dorian and Victor felt a bit slighted. but otherwise it was fantastic.
-
I agree. I thought it was a really good story with very strong performances from all on board.
Can't wait to see where they go next year.

Apparently it's been out since mid-April, but I've never come across it in a bookstore. And today I came across it quite by accident on Amazon. For those of us who love PD, it does look like it could be something worth getting...
-
I think it's season 1 only. And I think some of the artwork and set plans, etc was on the website at one point.
A friend bought it and really loved it.

Good to know. Thanks, Gothick! [santa_smiley]
-
as a costuming aficionado I noticed they changed Vanessa's "look" slightly this season to reflect her deteriorating emotional state...
in season one she looked like a proper Victorian lady with high collars, tightly wound hair and lots of jet. this season she was often quite unkempt. her look while out on the Moors was complete dishabille and "in town" she was dressed but always slightly undone.
Dorian's ball was really the only episode during the season when she was well put together.

it was very odd. [santa_huh]

He used the name John Clare in season 2. I don't remember him being mentioned onscreen as "The Creature"... it may have been how he was billed.
G.
-
That's a surprise about the comic. In terms of "writers." I thought John Logan wrote them all. I guess I didn't really pay attention to the credits for season 2 since I marathoned the shows over a weekend.
Time to re-watch...

that scene gave me goosebumps. carrying on like this clueless waif had been a complete ruse. she was totally raw and exposed.
