Soaps back then were all about women in peril. And apparently the audiences liked seeing their heroines in peril because the ratings for most soaps were quite respectable. So, apparently Joe et al. were giving the audiences what they wanted.
If you mean George Strus as Steve, I do think he was a stuntman too.
