New Images of Grayson - March 1959

Adelphi University provided photos of the recently discovered March 1959 production Aphrodite.

Grayson portrayed a character named Chrysis.  I'm having trouble getting the program to translate for the web but am working on posting it soon.

The Images are copyrighted, reproduction for resale is prohibited without the University's express permission.


To answer a few questions right off:
Grayson was 35 at the time of the production (and photos)
This was done 9 months after Matthew's birth.

Wow! Grayson looks just like Deborah Kerr in that classical getup!  Imagine if she and Jonathan had done something like "Medea" together.

Grayson looks lovely. I think that she resembles a young Elsa Lanchester in these particular photos.

Great photos, Julia99. Great eye for Shirley Grayson, Steve.  Just think: exactly 10 years after these photos were taken, Grayson was in full gypsy make-up, black fright wig and frocks on national television - playing Magda to millions of viewers each weekday on ABC (a steady paycheck).

Beautiful images! I still wish that Barnabas would have come to his senses and realized how much Julia loved him. Maybe it might happen in the new DS movie! [ghost_wink]

I was thrilled that Julia99 and friends recovered these images.  The photo published in Theatre Arts magazine wasn't nearly as nice as the images the college kept in their archives.  Here's to archivists and librarians, a truly under-regarded profession in our dismally decadent nation!

Another DS connection with this production is that Frank Schofield, our own Bill Malloy, had a role in it as well and had at least one scene with Grayson (they obviously never worked together on DS).

My special thanks to Julia99 for her enthusiasm, energy, and hard work in saving Grayson's artistic legacy for us all!
