Fixation or infatuation often are slapped with the label of "love"... it's probably more common in real life than anything you could call actual love. Often it's not so much about the other person, but more about casting that person in a role (perfect mate?) in the perfect life one expects to have, or feels he/she deserves. Ang has some "movie" playing in her head, some life she's trying to make happen, but we never find out exactly what it is.
Barnabas must have been really "impressive" in Martinique. Maybe she saw strength and serenity, someone who was "better" than she, and maybe if she can get him, then she must be on his "level", and not the mass of paranoia and desperation that she really is. None of it conscious of course.
