Thanks for sharing these teasers--I had no idea this was going to be a series.  I read all three novels (yes, it's a trilogy), and they were truly "page-turners."  Unconventional vampires, yes; creepy, frightening and enthralling, yes!  (Frankly, I gave up on True Blood after the third season--not so enthralling!)  I hope this series follows the novels--if so, it will present an excellent new take on the vampire mythology.

Okay, so how can I add a bunny to this post--they're so CUTE!  Oh, wait, I need to think NIGHT OF THE LEPUS.   [easter_wink]

Current Talk '14 I / Getting a DS "fix"
« on: April 27, 2014, 02:30:52 AM »
Sometimes I just want a fix--so I pop in a DVD and make a random selection from among the shows on the DVDs.  I wonder--does anyone else do this?

Thanks to all for the good wishes.  The right eye surgery went very well, too, and now I can see things with my distance vision without glasses or contacts for the first time in 47 years!  As for the surgeries--if I had to do it again, I would.  I would rather have cataract surgery than get a tooth crowned! A belated "thanks" to you all for the birthday wishes.  I spent the day after my birthday having cataract surgery on my left eye--it went well and I anticipate great improvement in my vision!  Doing the right eye next Thursday, and my doctor expects it to go equally as well!  Brian

Current Talk '13 II / Re: Amazon Deal of the Day: DS Complete Series

Amazon gave me a "courtesy" refund of $60.00.  I'm glad I saw the notice of the price drop here--and glad | stated my opinion about a refund.   [hall2_wink]

I bought the box set 8 days ago for $329.99!  I just sent Amazon an email telling them I wanted a refund or comparable credit for future purchases.  If they don't offer one or the other, maybe it's time I terminate my long-term Amazon loyalty.   [hall2_angry]  (All this after buying the entire series on VHS back in the early 90s, and then again on DVD in the 2000s.

I'm not optimistic, either.  I subscribed to Hulu+ in April so I could watch OLTL on my TV.  I cancelled that subscription today.  I hope others do, too, and maybe a message will be sent.  But I doubt it.  [ghost_sad]

Calendar Events / Announcements '13 II / Re: The Dark Shadows Music Book
« on: September 01, 2013, 01:52:20 AM »
I have owned this music book for many years.  As a (formerly professional and now semi-retired) musician, here are my thoughts on it:
DS THEME:  For the most part, this piano arrangement will sound nothing like the orchestral version, because the piano glisses in the left hand cannot approximate the harp and contrabass arpeggios heard in the recording.
QUENTIN’S THEME/SHADOWS OF THE NIGHT:  Not exact, but pretty close to the original piano arrangement heard in recordings.
COLLINWOOD:  Okay, so here’s how to make it sound almost like the recorded version: add the harmony noted—e.g., Cmi(maj7)—into the right hand, and put the C pedal point on the downbeats in the left hand and use lots of sustain pedal; change keys as indicated, etc., and you can approximate the voiceover music.
VICTORIA WINTERS:  Pretty easy.
#1 AT THE BLUE WHALE:  The left hand doesn’t give a grounded bass line.  Use the chord symbols above the staff (e.g., F6, Dmi, Gmi7, C9) as the basis for harmony, with each starting note (F, D, G, C) as the root in the left hand, improvise the triplet chords above the root bass, and there you go.
BACK AT THE BLUE WHALE:  See #1 AT THE BLUE WHALE (except that there are no triplets in the left hand).
I’LL BE WITH YOU ALWAYS:  Not too bad as is.
WHEN I AM DEAD:  Good piano rendition of the orchestral version.
JOSETTE’S MUSIC BOX:  Good piano rendition, but play another octave up for a music box-like sound.
MILLICENT COLLINS:  Good piano rendition of the orchestral version.
NIGHT OF TERROR:  The piano arrangement is very good, but we miss the orchestral colors. (The arrangement, with tremolos in both hands at various times, attempted to capture the orchestral arrangement—it is not exactly successful.)
I’M GONNA DANCE FOR YOU/I WANNA DANCE WITH YOU: Very good piano renditions.
ODE TO ANGELIQUE:  Matches the recording almost perfectly.
THE PLAYROOM THEME:  Simple and easy; play an octave higher for music box-like sound.
JOANNA:  It doesn’t get better than this: exactly as played in the piano recording.
GOODBYE, COLLINWOOD:  Again, good piano rendition of the orchestral version.

I watched yesterday and today, and I, too, am LOVING IT.  As someone else said, it's like visiting old friends.  And there were two surprises on the first OLTL episode: Nigel and (hope I won't spoil it for you) a character we thought dead until the last 5 minutes of the final ABC epsiode in Jan., 2012.  Plus, the language is a little more "like we talk."  The "S" word, with a variety of meanings, and, today, the a-hole word.  So much for ABC and the censors.  (Can you just imagine if Roger Collins had been permitted to call Jason an a-hole?  LOL)

Anyway, I am thrilledf to have OLTL back.

Current Talk '24 I / Re: hoDS/NoDS DVD Release?
« on: October 31, 2012, 02:06:13 AM »
I preordered both HODS and NODS blu-ray some months ago from Amazon, and received them this afternoon.  I'm watching HODS now (which is in 1.85:1 aspect ratio) and, may I say, so far HODS LOOKS FABULOUS!  I wonder is our dear Mr. Darren can enlighten us as to the source for this HD transfer...(hint, hint).

I have these books:
DARK SHADOWS: THE FIRST YEAR published by Blue Whale Books, 2006, 266 pages.
Maybe DS Fest Publications were based in Fort Worth in 1987.
DARK SHADOWS: THE COMIC STRIP BOOK – I think this is the complete strips.
DARK SHADOWS PROGRAM GUIDE -  not a “booklet” but I didn’t count the pages.

Current Talk '12 II / DS 91 series outtakes
« on: October 24, 2012, 02:13:30 AM »
Somewhere, somehow, I found about 19 minutes of "outtakes" that were filmed but cut from the TV airing of the 1991 DS series, starting with a scene in which Roger and Liz discuss why David cannot return to school. (These scenes were included, in context, in the MPI VHS release of the series, but not in the MGM DVD release--go figure!)  Anyway, I transferred these scene to DVD from whatever my source was, but that quality is not up to today's standards...so... I was looking for those scenes to re-transfer--I thought that they came from the DS Resurrected VHS video, but I cannot find them on that video (which I found pretty cheapo on eBay).  Anybody have any clues where I found those 19 minutes of outtakes?

It's a very good round-table discussion.  Kudos to Tim and his team for this excellent 24-page VW article.
