Darren,

Thanks for sharing the latest in your efforts.  I'm one of those people who enjoys reading about things like film restoration and reconstruction of "lost" music from Broadway shows and films.  There's a book about the making of A STAR IS BORN and restoration in the 80s that I've read a couple of times in the past decade.  Also, the restoration of the score to SHOW BOAT as it was recorded by John McGlinn some years ago interested me.  So, in my opinion, no detail is too minor to include in your reporting.  Thanks for sharing your work.

Bob,

Are you referring to "Lady Narborough?"  She looks somewhat like Ms. Bolster (the nose, I guess), and could in fact be her.  (I find no credit at IMBD for that character.)

Who could ever forget her role as the elegant lady at the dinner party in the occult classic, "The Picture of Dorian Gray"?

Actually, I think you're referring to Moyna MacGill, who was Angela Lansbury's mother.  She was the "elegant lady" at the dinner party in "Gray."  Another notable appearance was in "Unsinkable Molly Brown," once again as an elegant lady, and this time looking very much like her daughter does today.

Anita Bolster did have a small roll in "Scarlet Street," with Joan Bennett, FYI.

Hi, Darren.

Thanks for the extra insight.  I wish I could be at the DS convention in LA this year, but I've made a promise to myself to go to the the DS Con in NY in 2003--exactly 10 years since I attended my first and only convention.  Hopefully, by then, you'll have made lots of progress with these projects, and I'll look forward to hearing you talk about your restoration work that "resulted in the final, director's version of NODS."  ;)

In the meantime, if I get lucky with the lottery, I'll let you know.

Darren,

Since I work at an Union Business Agent representing Equity actors at Walt Disney World, I can understand the "hollywood" system and its way of doing things.  As I've said before, I wish I had the wealth to finance the project--but my salary doesn't allow for such "extravagances."

Also, like they say about actors in TV or Hollywood, "you're only as good as your last 'hit!'"

LOL.

It seems to me that a restoration cost of $100,000, in the grand scheme of things "Hollywood," is a relatively low amount of money.  Certainly, there is someone associated with NODS who can afford (i.e., could/would) cough up the $$ for this project.

I'm not really grading Grayson, but I'll list my favorites among her characters, in order of preference:

Magda
Dr Julia Hoffman
Julia Collins
Natalie DuPres
Julia Hoffman PT
Constance Collins

To "Albert Camus" (or whoever you are) who said:
"Often when I go on gay.com, I will make up a new chat name each time for my protection."

Firstly, sorry for the blue post that upset you so--but it seems you had an over-reaction to it and to everything Midnight has been trying to explain to you.

As to the quote above, it seems to me that if you (or anyone else, including me!) is visiting gay.com, the general reason is quite different from your reason for posting on this board (especially if you're going into the chat rooms on gay.com.)

I've found this board and DS folks posting here to be very open and friendly to me (and others) who are gay.  If you wish to change identities here to retain your anonymity, then maybe you have some issues about your admiration for DS and its actors and fans--certainly nothing to be ashamed of, in my opinion.

If you do have such issues as a DS fan, then I can't even imagine what issues would cause you to post under different names at gay.com.

But I'm more than willing to hear from you personally about this if you'd like to email me and open discussion.

In the meantime, let's keep this DS board to DS-related posts (even if my sexual orientation colors my post--and I don't mean blue font!) and PLEASE--don't argue with Midnight, who looks out for all of us.

Hi, Steve.

Yes, it is Shelly Burch, and I'd love to find a copy of that tape to share with her.  She "semi-retired" 10 or 12 years ago in order to have a family, but she now does stage and TV work once in a while.  She's very humble, and a delightful lady--and very talented.  I have to admit, during our lunch, she mentioned the "actress who played [her] mother" and could have left it at that, but she went on to name Grayson Hall--and mentioned Grayson's work in THAT DARN CAT for one of our other  luncheon partners who is way too young to know DS or Grayson.  I really felt I was experiencing that idea of "6 Degrees of Separation," and, I think, in Shelly's mind, Grayson represented somewhat of a star to her in her early work on OLTL.  (Yes, she was in NINE, too.)

I've also found that DVDs are not as expensive as pre-recorded VHS tapes (overall, of course.)  Join the right mail-order or online club, and you can find a lot of bargains.

BTW, thanks Darren, for the info on resolution.

I finally bought a DVD player about a year ago and I am very impressed with the quality of the picture and sound on DVD.  Even programs originally shot on videotape, such as Dan Curtis' DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, look better on DVD than on VHS: no bleeding of colors (red and blue, in particular) and the picture is so much clearer.  Of course, now that I'm in my 40s, the DVD format is the last video format I'll embrace.  D-VHS won't be on my shopping list.

That said, I'll probably start replacing my DS MPI videos little by little. . .

Midnight, thanks for the notice--I can read the blue post just fine on my screen--and, in fact, I used the blue font to make a point about the use of blue light, in particular, to create some of the atmosphere on DS.  Ah, well, guess my little experiment didn't go over well.  Next time I'll try a different color, but in the meantime, if the poster used language that warranted removal of his/her message, then leave the blue of my post for spite!!  ;D

I agree with Luciaphil that "sometimes less is more."

One of the things I like about the B&W DS episodes is the lighting and atmosphere that recreates the look of the classic Universal horror films.  When DS first went to color, I felt it was too brightly lit--only later, after the 1795 story concludes, does the color lighting begin to approach the same atmosphere of the B&W shows.  (But that's only my opinion.)

By the way, I do remember THE SEVENTH VICTIM--and in particular I believe there was a suspensful scene featuring a door at the end of a hall that Kim Hunter was afraid to open--or am I thinking of something else? ?!?

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd add a new message, with a little different Grayson info, to this one.

I had lunch plans with a friend this afternoon, and she brought along a couple of her co-workers to join us, one of whom was the actress who played Delilah on ONE LIFE TO LIVE back in the '80s.  We chatted a bit about the show, and she mentioned the "wonderful woman who played [her] mother--Grayson Hall."  She went on to briefly describe how Grayson was so much fun on the show, and that she went against the traditional soap casting of that era because she was mainly a theater person and not the usual "TV look" actor.  Of course, I had to admit I now watch OLTL and had grown up on DS (a show which we had to explain to one of the younger members of our little luncheon party.)  Anyway,  even though Keith Prentice was an acquaintance of mine back in the early 80s, and I've met and chatted with Marie Wallace as part of my job, it was especially fun to talk with a non-DS actor about Grayson and what she was like--not to mention trading anecdotes about our work with stars and such in the entertainment industry.

Just thought I'd share. . . ;)
