As a DS-DVD club member for nearly three years, I've received many percs with the membership, and I have already received three of the six pre-Barnabas sets, with the fourth one expected mid-August.  Yes, I paid the $59.99 price, but shipping WAS free via USPS, and the DVD sets arrived pretty quickly after being mailed.  The plus for me is that I get the 6th pre-Barnabas set for free!  And four of the five bobbleheads were $1.00 each, with the plexiglass "coffin" storage/display case for free.  (I would never have paid full price or even considered buying these bobbleheads, but for a buck each, why not?  I did complete the collection by paying MPI's priice for the werewolf--but now with a complete set, I'll start watching and waiting for the best time to make a nice profit on the whole set on eBay!  Even it it takes several years.   ;D)  So, I guess I don't feel like I've been gouged--but that's just my opinion and experience.  Brian

I've noticed this in the past on the DS MPI videos (VHS and DVD), and on other tapes, including old reel-to-reel audio tapes.  I first noticed it about 20+ years ago when listening to audio cassettes of DS that I recorded back in 1970 and 1971.  Called "print-through," this is common with analog audio (even when said audio is part of a video-tape.)  Do a Google search for "print-through" to learn more.

I attended only one DS fest, in 1993.  I remember that Roy Thinnes was there, and he worked his way down the autograph line and he gave much time to the fans in line.  I did not get to meet him personnaly, but my observation was that he was a charming and warm person, and he welcomed and thanked DS fans for their interest.  (This was after his appearnces in 1992 on One Life to Live as Sloan Carpenter, a character I enjoyed much more than his turn as Roger Collins.  By all accounts, Mr Thinnes is a gentleman who appreciates his viewing audience.)

From DVD Review:  "MGM Home Entertainment has just unveiled plans to release a series of Noir Classics on DVD this summer.  Starring the incomparable Edward G. Robinson, the line-up will contain director Fritz Lang’s 1944 psychological thriller, The Woman In The Window. . . All films will be released on July 10 for $19.98 each."   :D

Current Talk '07 I / Re: Barnabas, Quentin, and the Body Snatchers
« on: April 24, 2007, 04:56:17 AM »
We gotta remember the audience for these novels...not the general public, but a bunch of pre-pubescent kids who ran home from school to watch DS, and who never even heard of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, since that (and other) '50s movies weren't easily available on TV back the late 60s/early 70s.  (As I recall, my favorite Ross novel was "The Peril of Barnabas Collins" because there were some paragraphs about a carriage traveliing cross country to Maine...or something like that.  It was my first DS novel, so I guess that's why it is "special." LOL.)  On another SAD note--I was in Ohio last weekend to visit family, and the same elementary school from which I used to run home to watch DS has been torn down!!  AHHHHH--it was only bulit in 1961 (I started 1st grade in fall of '63), but the school board tore this building down because the state gave the board money for another new school....but there's no money available to operate the new school, and the teachers have to take a cut in pay.  "What's wrong with this picture?" Off-topic--sorry.  Brian

... that whole little scene between Stokes and Julia is one of the few bits of the film that I think comes anywhere near capturing the atmosphere and quality of the show itself.   I haven't had cable in years and have never been aware of this show being syndicated, which seems odd.G.

I think that scene in HODS between Elliot and Julia is my favorite in the entire film.  So concisely well-written.   The revival series tried to lift it, but made enough changes to Julia's lines to make it a new, although not better, scene.

Kaye Ballard comments in her book that she wishes THE MOTHERS-IN-LAW had run one more season so it could have entered syndication, and she might have made some more money.  I think the general rule of thumb, based on all I've read, is that a series needs to run 100 episodes before syndication (as we used to know it way back when) becomes practical or profitable.

Camilla's. . .one line of dialogue is one of the few that stands out for me from my viewings of hoDS (apart from anything in the trailer, of course " Vampirism is NOT a disease, Julia!").

Steve, I always thought that line was by Thayer David, not Camilla Ashland.  I thought her line was to Roger:  ". . .Only a party at Collinwood would have gotten me out of my house tonight...all those dreadful attacks."  (Her inflection rising on attacks always caught my ear.)  Or did I misinterpret your post (quite possible in my advancing years--AARP finally got me as a member.  LOL.

Our dear Ms. Ashland, whose appearances in DS were few but memorable, is mentioned in the recent Kaye Ballard autobiography ("How I Lost 10 Pounds in 53 Years") as a dear friend of Ms. Ballard.  It's a fun book, and for those of us old enough to have watched DS when it originally aired in the 60s-70s, a nice trip through time with Kaye Ballard (remember "The Mothers-In-Law?).

Sadly these are not licensed or authorized releases...Sci-Fi showed DEVIL'S DAUGHTER several years back in a gorgeous copy- clearly a fairly recent transfer that would look terrific on DVD. You can bet that anyone with an off-air tape of that will have a version better than the upcoming DVD.

Darren, thanks for that information.  It will probably influence my decision to purchase this DVD, now.  But....I DO have my VHS home recorded tape of the Sci-Fi channel's showing of Devil's Daughter, which I transferred to my own DVD a few years back.  And you're right, the Sci-Fi showing isn't too bad.

As always, thanks for sharing your inside expertise.

Calendar Events / Announcements '07 I / 2 New DS-related DVDs coming
« on: March 20, 2007, 01:34:57 AM »
:D  Two 1972 TV-movies are coming soon to DVD, and both have DS actors in them.  Jon Frid was in "The Devil's Daughter," and Tom Happer was in "Crawlspace."  Both due May 1 from Wild Eye home entertainment (I can't find anything about this company on the web--anybody know who/what/where it is?)

While we're sorta on the topic:  has anyone ever actually seen "The Minx"?"  I believe it was sort of a quasi-porn film, with Robert Rodan.  How much of Mr. Rodan was on display, I wonder.  ;)

Ron Jeremy as Prof Stokes
Well, there was a time--not long after DS left the air I guess--when the "extraordinary" Mr. Jeremy was thin as a rail, more like a Quentin than a Stokes.  Perhaps his, umm, unusual girth in his youth somehow translates into a somewhat portly Stokes--we just don't know where the portly comes from.  (Did I really say that?  Are we even really talking about this stuff?  Well, yes.)

LOL.

Current Talk '07 I / Re: Who did the best voiceovers?
« on: March 16, 2007, 02:54:42 AM »
Fave women first, because they ddn't portray their characters in the VO, and were usually unidentifiable but mysterious:

Lara Parker
Katie Scott
Nancy Barrett
Clarice Blackburn
Grayson Hall

Men:

Always identifiable to me, but I liked:

James Storm
Jerry Lacy
Thayer David

My take on the VO.

Current Talk '07 I / Re: PT1841 (spoilers for newbies)
« on: March 11, 2007, 03:17:42 AM »
Spoilers ahead for newbies....

Back in 1971, I enjoyed the 41PT story, up until I read the show was being cancelled, and even then, in the last few days, I was naive enough to think that Catherine's
possession
in the next-to-last episode would result in the whole cancellation thing being a huge April Fool's joke on all of us and DS would continue on Monday April 5...but I was wrong.  Anyway, the 41PT story is well-written and self-contained, and does not rely on previous knowledge of the DS universe.  So, what if...just before the last few shows, a decision was made to NOT cancel DS, and one of the 41PT characters viewed another parallel time Collinwood with Bramwell and Catherine as the hero and heroine...where might the next story have taken us?  And would we ever have returned to the 1971 Collinwood we knew so well?  Anyone up for speculation?
