One thing that was fun was seeing the wonderful actor Peter Bartlett, for as long as I can recall known as Asa's long-time "personal assistant," the very loyal, fey and quasi-British Nigel playing a very butch--and loyal--family servant in Texas from 1968.  LOL.

[ghost_wink]    This is somewhat off-topic, except for two common denominators:  ABC and Sam Hall.  The daytime soap One Life to Live (OLTL), which debuted on ABC in July 1968 is celebrating 40 years on the air with a couple of special episodes, the first aired today, and the second tomorrow.  In short, as one of three salutes to the show's history, OLTL is revisiting a time travel-type concept, which first played out in the late 1980s, when Sam Hall was head-writing the show, by having two 2008 characters going back to 1968 (after being struck by lightning).  Both characters see and recognize characters from their present as different characters from the past, e.g. as on DS when Vicki confused Josette with Maggie, Naomi with Liz, etc.  In another salute, Vicki Lord Buchanan ... (more husbands' names) ... Davidson has died and is reuniting in Heaven with characters from her past, including the actor (who left the show a few years ago) who originally played her daughter Jessica now appearing as her daughter's now-grown daughter who had died at birth--at least in Heaven.

I don't know that any of this was planned with regards to DS, but the show is clearly honoring its own history as well as ABC's history with doing things that no other network did back then (not until Passions, on NBC, anyway.)

Just thought I'd share...

I'm 14. That's not a typo, and I'm not kidding... my already scornful grandparents seem to think even less of me than they did before ever since I started watching DS, even flat-out telling me that I shouldn't watch the show. They have a big thing against fiction dealing with the supernatural in a non-religious contex..

Goober...not to disparage your grandparents, but my parents (born in 1936/1937) were always supportive of my interests, including DS in 1969, and had no problem with me watching it when i was only 12-13 years old.  Dad sometimes watched, too, and he always fondly rememebed "Barnaby" Collins (his memory of the character's name).  In fact, my great-grandmother, born in 1896!, sometimes watched it with me.  And she enjoyed it, too!!  Stand by your interests and continue to do your best to educate your family about being open-minded and non-judgemental -- which is one of the things that DS taught me!

He complains he has a hard time getting into "OLD" shows.  One good thing though, (the boyfriend)  He loves Grayson. Any definitive Grayson ep's one would recommend , please do.

Okay, from this middle-aged gay man who watched DS in 1968-1971, just tell them both that they're not really gay unless they can appreciate older movies, color or B&W, and not just DS but all those great old Bette Davis/Marilyn Monroe/Joan Crawford/Doris Day--dare I add more?--movies.  It's not all about Andrew Lloyd Webber or Madonna.  You're not a real "gay" until you can appreciate the history of entertainment that speaks to gays.  And more:  drag queens used to do showtunes and actually sing live!  That's real drag!  (Not "To Wong Foo" or "Priscilla" but "Outrageous.")  And Julia Hoffman is the ultimate drag queen - just because she's played by a woman doesn't mean she's not a queen!.  LOL.  What else?  Oh, yeah, "Satan in High Heels."  "Polly Magoo?"  Oh..and one more...they should check out the Carmen Miranda DVD collection.  Now there's a real female drag queen!!! who came years before Julia Hoffman.  LOL.  and IMHO.  Brian

I don't know how many of you feel about the '04 DS show that never made it. For me the pictures that I have seen of the stars, I was pretty disappointed in the casting area with many of the characters that were chosen. I think that they should have been chosen to look sort of similar to the originals. It might have worked for someone that has never seen the original DS but for the fans of the original show I thought in my opinion that the cast sucked.

I can't speak for the casting, since I have only seen photos (and Blair Brown is the only cast member whose work I know), but I've read the teleplay and was very impressed with it.  Of course only those of you who actually saw the (sort-of) finished product at one the DS Fests can speak to the execution of that script.

Four women and one bathroom has the potential to wind up like the first 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan It's just plain ugly. [ghost_mad]

LOL...same with four men (which I haven't done in 25 years--share rooms, that is) but worse with only two gay men...we boys--me included--have to have the mirror time in bathroom to get ready.  ;)

We have several members attending this year and you may be able to find a roomate.
Our next meeting is June 28.
Hey LdyAnne..nice to hear from you.  I think we met some years ago at a CFL DS meeting.  Anyway, at my age (okay, 51!)--and with all due respect to everyone--I don't do roomates anymore.  Been single and lived alone for too many years to go back to the college thing.  LOL.  But maybe I'll spend the extra bucks and come to the fest anyway.  Still debating.

While I can not speak specifically about Joan Bennett, I can speak about a couple of other women who worked in Hollywood during Ms. Bennett's tenure there:  Kim Hunter and Phyllis Thaxter.  I, and one of my colleagues, worked with both Ms. Hunter and Ms. Thaxter back in the mid 1990s in Vero Beach, Fl, at Riverside Theatre.  Kim did "The Belle of Amhurst," and Phyllis did "Driving Miss Daisy" and also recorded narration for our production of "Peter Pan."  Both of these ladies were very "unaffected" and "down-to-earth."  I was also pleased to become friends with Phyllis, at least while we both lived and worked in Vero.  I can only imagine that Kim and Phyllis represented the best of what the studio system trained in its stars, that is humility, honesty and confidence in their talent.  Joan Bennett also seems to have projected those same qualities.  From my experience (and I've said this before), most stars are real people and just like you and me, and that's the joy of meeting our DS Stars...they're just like us (my personal interactions have been with Marie Wallace, Keith Prentice, Keene Curtis, Roy Thinnes [DS91]) but very friendly and accessible!  (And we should still honor them with some reverence...okay?)

I'm finally thinking about flying from Florida to CA for the fest in July, but I can't find special room rates for the Fest at the Marriott.  I CAN get a great flight on Delta for less than $1000, which is my primary concern, but I'd rather not pay $200 a night for a room.  Are there special rates for the Fest that I don't know about, and a code or other wording to get special rates?  Thanks for any thoughts/info.  Brian

Also not DS, but I guessing Cincinnati's WLWC has been off the air for quite a while because there's now a WLWC based in Providence, RI that used to run both UPN's and the WB's (timeshifted) programming, but now it's only fitting that it runs the CW's shows.

I tihnk I may have been wrong about WLWC.  In Dayton, we had WLWD (now WDTN) and in Indianapolis, it was WLWI.  But after doing a little reseach, I found that WLW was originally a radio station, and WLWT (in Cincy) was probably the TV offshoot of the WLW radio network.  So it probably was not WLWC at all, but WLWT, channel 5, as it is today.  My, how much the mind can rearrange things after 40 years!  :)

I, too, remember Ruth Lyons and the 50/50 club, which was broadcast live (I think at noon) from Cincy on WLWC (I lived north of Dayton and we had one of those old-fashioned antennas which, to this day, is still anchored to the side of my deceased parents house in which I grew up!).  And Bob Braun, et all. And there was Bonnie Lou, the singer and yodeler!  Those were fun shows to watch when I was a kid back in the 60s.  For what its worth, I may as well add that I also remember watching George Clooney's father Nick on news broadcasts from Cincy.  And the best was Phil Donahue, who orginated his talk show on WLWD in Dayton back in the 60s!  As I recall, hiis show followed Paul Dixon's....Dixon at 9 am, and Donahue at 10.  Dixon used to make jokes about the "screw" that held his toupee on...:)

Okay, not DS but I had to share.  (BTW, referring to another thread, i knew Keith Prentice, also from Dayton, back in the early 80s.  Not much I can add to comments about him, but he was always talkative and pleasant to me, and shared many stories about his work in Sound of Music, on DS and in Cruising.)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Annie.  Guess what?  50 is even better than 49!! I know!!  LOL.  Brian

Back in the late 60s, Dad got home from work by 4 pm (an electrician, he started his day at 7 am, ended at 3:30, with a one-half-hour lunch), and Mom was expected to have dinner on the table when he walked in the door.  Well....in 1969 DS aired in Dayton at 4 pm, and I was allowed to watch it on the brand new 25 inch color television in the living room...and dinner was delayed to 4:30 or 5:00.  There was never any censoring of what I watched.   Fast forward to late 1990s...Dad would see a picture of Jonathan Fird as Barnabas and he would remember the character as "Barnaby the vampire."  (I remember we had watched HODS on CBS late-night once or twice in the late 70s, so that was his frame of reference).

Dad passed in 2002--and he was in awe of DVDs and surround sound; I wish he had been able to experience more modern technology!  Mom passed on February 1 this year, but she also always recalled and appreciated my interest in DS and movie musicals right to the end.  My parents, born in the late 30s, were open-minded, progressive thinkers...and they "got it," i..e., they didn't buy into all that religious crap about DS and other such shows/movies/comics and how such entertainment would send us to hell.

I love them both, may they RIP!

Again, thanks to all for your birthday wishes.  And Magnus, please enjoy the DVD player--to the rest of you, I had an extra used player just sitting in storage, so I decided to give it to Magnus since he doesn't have one.  (Sometimes I do stuff like that!.) Brian
