Yes, I would stop the Gulf War just for the continuation of a TV show.

I'd have stopped that war for many more reasons, like...maybe we would not have entered an unnecessary war in Iraq...

Not to get too political, some of y'all might want to check out the DVD "The Most Dangerous Man in America," which is about the Vietnam war but is relevant, in many ways, to the Gulf War and the Iraq war.

That said, at least we have DS as a constant in our lives with all the turmoil going on around us.

Thanks for the notice...I just ordered a copy, too!

David, you have my sympathies for the way you and your partner's situation turned out, but I offer CONGRATS! to you for moving forward and sharing your story, since it can only help so many others.  As you well know, sometimes we as individuals must make sacrifices that might serve the greater good.  Brian

FYI, there is a new documentary on the November 2008 Paramount/CBS DVD release of "The Boys in the Band" that chronicles "The Play," "The Film," and "40 Years of 'Boys in the Band'."  Included are interviews with the few cast members who are still with us.

Happy Birthday, Magnus...almost missed it, I guess, but "better late than never."  (Trite comments never die, do they!)

Not to promote Jim Pierson's bandwagon, but in addition to DS, he has done a lot to get other long-time TV shows on DVD through MPI, sush as "The Doris Day Show," "The Jackie Gleason Show" (aka "The Color Honeymooners) and 'Here's Lucy."  I'm very certain that "Here's Lucy" has been released with the permission of Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz, Jr., who control the rights to use their parents' images and TV programs.  Anyway, I know Jim Pierson has been criticized for many years by some DS fans for his actions with regards to DS, but apparently Dan Curtis approved his involvement in protecting Curtis' programs.  (And NO, I am not Jim Pierson, nor do I know him--but maybe we would not have DS on VHS (from 1989 on) or DVD (from the mid- 2000s) without his championing the show.   Just my opinion, for what it is worth. The review in VARIETY actually mentions DS:

Okay, so why the "co-starring" credit at the end rather than a "guest-starring" credit at the top of the show? Where was Grayson's agent and what was s/he thinking?  I mean, Mike Kellin?  He's a Broadway actor with minor credits from the 50s.. Kathleen Quinlan didn't make till later in the 70s.   Grayson was only a co-star?  Rant.......Rant...LOL.

Some time ago, I saw one of Grayson's OLTL shows--I think the introduction of her character--and I think is was on YouTube, but it seems to have disappeared from that site.  Someone does have some video from those days, and maybe they'll post the clips again someday soon.

I think it's great that HODS is even included on this list, and I agree that some of the Hammer films should have been included, too--possibly even it meant NOT including HODS (I know, I know...so stone me!)  But really, "Fright Night" is a classic and deserves to be on the list, and I can think of any number of other films that I would rather see than a few of the ones mentioned -- John Carpenter's "Vampires" comes to mind.  Also "Shadow of the Vampire."  In my opinion... Okay, so I've run a complete virus and spyware scan and I still see these flying brown jackets on the DS Forums page--so, what's up with that?

Current Talk '10 I / NODS HD Amazon download
« on: April 05, 2010, 04:15:28 AM »
I bought the NODS Amazon download earlier this year, and when I went to watch it tonight, I was offered a 48-hour HD download of the flick.  So for 4 bucks, I said, why not...The titles in particular are quite striking (as opposed to the blurred titles of the standard def version),  but I am troubled by a few omissions:  when near the beginning we see Quentin and Tracy getting out of the card from the windows, the familiar vibraphone music cue was completely missing.  Also, right after Tracy claims the gallery is her favotire room, Carlotta (off screen) has the start of a line that is not completed before the scene ends.  Then , just before the kitchen scene with Gerard and Carlotta, we see TRacy adn Quentin in bed (after Quentin's first dream) and there is a music cue (low timp and flute) that I've never heard in this movie.  I'm starting to wonder "what's up here."  This must be yet another different sound mix, right?  Anybody else have any thoughts?  (FYI--the picture is gorgeous!)

Current Talk '10 I / HODS Amazon video on demand
« on: January 24, 2010, 05:10:59 AM »
While we await a HODS DVD release, I decided to check out the Amazon.com video-on-demand version of HODS, which I purchased instead of rented, for viewing via my blu-ray player on my HD TV. The presentation fills the screen in 1.85:1 aspect ratio, which is a zoomed and cropped picture of the full-frame presentation available on VHS and as shown on TCM (and other TV stations over the years).  I must assume, then, that when we finally see HODS on DVD, this will be the presentation, rather than what we see on the VHS and TV versions PLUS additional picture information on the side.  Actually, in this presentation on my HD set, HODS looks just fine, the framing is quite good, and so I think this is what we'll get.
