I went into my 2nd depression--the first in April 1971 when DS was cancelled, and my 2nd last week, when I learned that OLTL was cancelled.  I only watched DS for almost 2 years (6/69-4/71), but I have watched OLTL since 6/92...so! I have been watching for nearly 19 years!!  Not an easy addiction to cure.  LOL.

I walked by the old DS studios several times many years ago when I was in NY, both the 10th St and 11th St sides.  I recognized the outside of the studios from pictures...and at those times (sometime between 1992 and 1995) there were no other shows taping there.  Still, I recognized the old DS studios, and it really WAS cool.  ;)

Testing. 1, 2, 3... / Red font on black BG
« on: December 02, 2010, 06:35:59 AM »
Hey, Midnight and MB,

From this middle-aged man with aging eyes, please note that the red font on black background in use for this holiday sason is VERY hard to read.  Maybe if the red font was in BOLD, it would help, or if the default red font were a few points larger, or if the backgoudn were a different color (don't know which to suggest)...whatever, please take a look and see if you can do something to make it easier for us older folks to read.  ;)

Thanks,
Brian

Current Talk '10 II / Re: Why Dark Shadows Scared the Hell Out of Us
« on: November 09, 2010, 03:12:36 AM »
I don't remember ever being frightened while watching DS back in the 60s/70s, when I was 12-13 years old.  Maybe because I had been introduced to the horror genre through the old Universal films airing on TV--which I loved, even back then--none of the DS characters/situations were scary to me.  These characters were my friends, after all.  The author is incorrect in that no soaps in that era ran an hour; in fact, some soaps in 1966 were still live, and ran only 15 minutes (and with commercials and such, at that.) Hour-long soaps didn't come about until the mid-70s.

Well, I have three of ten on DVD...must reflect my superior taste...

Has anyone else who watches "One Life to Live" noticed that Brandon Buddy (Cole Thornhart) has Barnabas bangs over his forehead--at least in today's episode.  LOL

...there are fans out there that have nothing better to do but report these things to the stars to better themselves with the stars and to spoil the fun for the rest of us...

Just for the record...despite my previously-stated  position on this topic, and the fact of my employment in the entertainment industry...I have had no direct contact with Jonathan Frid.  (Full disclosure: in the past 30 years, I have enjoyed both personal and professional  interactions with other DS actors, and I would take the same position with regards to their rights to the commercial use/sale of their image, etc.)

It's nice to hear that Mr. Crothers was so open about his sexual orientation more than 40 years ago, at a time "Before Stonewall" when many people were still in the closet.  What is most disturbing to me is that in 2010 many daytime actors are forced (by employers and/or agents--or by personal ambition) to romance/marry "beards," who are often women working on the very same show as the actor.  This is especially true, it seems, of the Disney/ABC daytime shows.  As far as I can tell, only one male actor who appears on both an ABC daytime show and a primetime show has refused to discuss his personal life--and has not linked himself with any women (as in girlfriend or marriage).  His silence on this subject speaks volumes, and is preferable to his denial of his personal orientation.

i dont agree with the actors being able to control or object to pictures/video being sold from them being out in public especially if they are on the street like at the vista theatre. the paparazzi take and sell pictures/video of stars all the time and make a living selling the pictures to tabloids. theres a fan that photographed the d.s. stars in front of the abc studios. he has been selling photos for years at the fest and elsewhere.

Joe, with all due respect to your opinion as stated, stars (and non-stars, as most of the DS actors might be considered) and even you and I, do have the rights to control use of our image(s) when commercial (aka profitable) use of such images is considered.  I can't speak for paparazzi...maybe they have specific rights due to their status and press credentials.  But as a private citizen, it would not be within my rights to record in any media the image or audio/video performance of anyone else and sell that media for personal gain.  Nor would anyone else be permitted to do the same with my media images.  And, just becuase someone has done this and gotten away with it doesn't make it right.

Sorry, but that's the law, and, even more importantly, it's the moral way to handle this sort of issue.

Actually, Mr. Frid has the right to control the "commercial exploitation" of his image, whether in video or photography, even if such media were acquired during a public event.  Newscast and b-roll used to promote the actual event are one thing; sales by private parties of those images and video are another thing altogether.  If Mr. Frid (and any of the other actors/writers/techs/etc. of the show) were negotiated with and properly compensated for such sales, then this sale of materials might be allowed.  Sorry, but I have to agree that sales of pictures and video of the conventions and such is inappropriate and, possibly, illegal-- unless sanctioned by the promotors and participants in the event.  (Why do I say this?  I'm a union rep for actors [though not those represented by AFTRA, which covered DS], and this is one area I constantly have to police.)

Calendar Events / Announcements '10 II / Michael Cavanaugh (DS91)

Just saw Michael Cavanaugh (DS91) in new Progressive Insurance ad on Tv.

I thought the film was confusing, but I think a second viewing will be valuable.  As for KLS, her scenes are brief, but she has a nice scene in the the "deleted scenes" section, and her interview in the "making of" is fun.

Got mine today...what a wonderful soundtrack, great music and orchestrations and recording.  Brought back a lot of memories from the 91 series. (Now I'm gonna have to watch it again!)
