Title: Favorite very brief characters
Post by: IluvBarnabas on October 25, 2006, 04:27:36 AM
Which briefly character from the list did you like the most and would have liked to have seen more of? (Or who else do you think was a welcome but all too brief addition to the show?)

I would love to have seen much more of Suki Forbes! She had such a quick wit and fire about her, she was such a pistol! Not to mention the fact that the could have caused continued problems for the Collins family, past, present, and future! [female_skull]

I would have liked to see more of Aunt Hannah in parallel time.

As much as I love Suki Forbes, King Johnny and Janet Findley, I would have loved to have seen more of Buffie Harrington in 1970PT. Eleven episodes was simply not enough.
(Special consideration also to ProfStokes' choice of Hannah Stokes from 1970PT and Portia Fitzsimmons from 1967, who might have been a hoot and a half had she been around longer.)

Definitely Buffy Harrington!  She was the most "real" of them all, making a living, having an apartment......and one that contained the only television set seen on the entire series.  You can't get more real than that.

I thought Suki Forbes was great.   [hall_wink]   She told Nathan Forbes what was what.

You know who else I like.....Juliannka.  Some of you didn't much care for her, but I did. [female_skull]

The only one in Collinsport, but not the only one seen on the series.   [hall2_wink]

I loved King Johnny, but I voted for the obvious--BUZZ HACKETT!   [hall2_grin]

I also adored Hannah Stokes!  Wish they'd brought her back to RT as Elliott's spinster sister or even more intriguing, his little-known ex-wife!  ;)

Good one!  [hall2_wink] Of the choices offered I selected Suki Forbes. I didn't really consider Buffie Harrington and/or Hannah Stokes until after I voted, but I loved them both! If I recall correctly, Elizabeth Eis AND Paula Laurence were both at the 93 fest, which was my first, and I hadn't seen their storylines yet. I had no idea who they were, and, although I met them both in the autograph lines, I didn't have a thing to say to them. How I regretted that after I saw their performances!  [hall2_cry]

Indeed they were, and I missed them as well because we were running KLS's table at that Fest, this was before the stars sat at their own merchandise tables (or, for that matter, before anyone other than KLS even HAD merchandise--well, except for Terry Crawford and *maybe* Louie Edmonds was selling his CD by then), and because I too had not seen their plotline, had no interest in meeting them, so I stayed at the table while Karlenfan who HAD seen 1970 PT went to their panels.  Now I want to meet them!   [hall2_cry]  But you know, if they didn't show up for the 40th, I have little faith they'll show up again.   [hall2_cry]

Madam Findley is definitely a favorite.  Garth Blackwood makes me laugh, I love how he says "ARRRR!"  I would have thought he would be more popular with today's fans because of all the Pirates insanity around those Johnny Depp films.

I was just compiling (for a friend who wants to show it to a class he's teaching) a selection of clips relating to the use of the I Ching on the series, and I finished it off with Wanda Paisley's memorable I Ching encounter.  I really, REALLY wish Wanda Paisley had become a semi-regular.  I think she would have made a much more interesting "girlfriend" for Quentin than that drip, Amanda Harris.  Men like Quentofi, in the 1890s, tended to have more than one woman in their life anyway; there was the respectable lady friend and then the girl who was around to take care of their, uh, manly needs.

cheers, G.

Wanda Paisley, yes!  I would've enjoyed a longer stay for her on the show, and was there a character with a cooler name?  And actually, I could've stood less Garth Blackwood, but that's me.

It would be great to see Elizabeth Eis return to a Fest.  BuzzH, Paula Laurence passed away about a year ago.

I forgot about Wanda.....now that I think about it she would have been a great addition to the show....she was a floozy, but a fun one. Petofi/Quentin could have enslaved her and he and Aristede could take turns bossing her around and whenever she got out of line.....sparks would fly. [hall2_wink]

BuzzH, Paula Laurence passed away about a year ago.

So.....she won't be at another Fest?   >:D

Hey, don't laugh, someone asked me and Phoebe at the '94 L.A. Fest if Joan Bennet would be attending and Phoebe said, "No, unfortunately Ms. Bennet passed away in 1990."  They then asked, w/a completely strait, serious face after a pause, "So.....she won't be here?"

Phoebe and I looked at each other because we thought this person HAD to be screwing w/us, but she wasn't.  WHEW....!!   [hall2_rolleyes]

P.S. When she walked away I said to Phoebe, "We should have said in response 'not unless you have a Ouja Board!'"   [hall2_grin]

P.S.S. I'd personally love to see (BIG SURPRISE) Michael Hadge, aka Buzz, come to a Fest.  Pierson needs to get on that!   [hall2_wink]

Suki Forbes for me.  I loved the way she put Nathan in his place.  Julianka was another good one - I really liked her, but her personality was so harsh in the short time we got to see her.  I was really hoping she would open up and we would get to know her better as the weeks went by, but alas, it wasn't to be.

Honorable mention to Ezra Braithwait (or however you spell that).  That guy was a hoot.

No votes for Carl's girlfriend Panzy Fay, huh?  I loved the utterly mortified look on Barney's face when she did her song and dance number  [hall2_grin]

I am surprised that King Johnny did not get more votes.  He can wear my golden earring anytime. [hall2_kiss]

By the way,  wasn't Buzz Hackett the son of the business man that Liz was going to sell property to because she needed the money.  This was brought up by Burke during an exchange with Elizabeth.  Buzz, the son of a classless nouveau riche business man.  Carolyn becomes Mrs. Buzz Hackett which would inject some cash into the Collins family bank account and put some pedigree in the Hackett clan. How about if I throw Grandmamamamamama Edith's hat into the ring?  Although I loved Buffie (by the way, Midnite, where else were other TV sets shown? - I'm completely blank), Grandmamamamama was another hoot, even when she blew her line and called Quentin by his brother's name, and just ad-libbed her way out of it.  It just made her character seem more real.

It's been awhile since I watched the pre-Barn eps, but I believe Burke *did* do business w/a man named Hackett.  Probably just a coincidence, but then again, what a great idea for a fan fic, Buzz as the near-do-well son of a weathy business man!   [hall2_grin]

I should also mention that I rather enjoyed Bathia Mapes, blooper and all!   [hall_grin]

Excellent choice!  I've just started watching the 1897 storyline again and saw Ep. 705.  That's when Barnabas comes to meet grandmama and she recognizes him!  Oh what a delicious scene/episode.  Here's a few splendid shots:

How about Haza and Oberon, those two Leviathans, who shanghai Barnabas?

I don't believe that we ever got to hear Haza (or Hazar?) ever actually speak.  However, Oberon was quite loquacious.  In fact, Oberon was so talkative and downright grandiloquent, that he even made the haughty Diabolos sound like comedian Norm Crosby by comparison! [hall2_wink]

King Johnny was certainly the most colorful and entertaining brief character with his fiery Meditteranean temper (and unusual, an Italian in a primarily WASP-ish cast of characters).

The CUTEST brief character was Suki Forbes ( a hot blonde cutie - unfortunate that she ended up with a scoundrel such as Nathan Forbes).

King Johnny just escapes me. I don't mind him, but I don't really like him either. I guess he just wasn't on there for too long like Julianka, not long enough for me to form an opinion.

(Sarcastically) Hey, while we're at it, why don't we start a whole thread about my wang.   Sheeesh.   But come to think of it..... naaah.

Well, until you just came right out and named the body part, no actual names had been used - though I'll certainly concede the part WAS strongly implied.  [hall2_wink]  And true, that particular comment did single you out - but as I recall, my original remark referenced the influence that body part has on EVERY man. I simply referenced you while replying to Brandon Collins because the original remark had been connected to you in a later response to what you had said in reference to Julianka. So, one could actually say you made the connection to your own body part with your own reference to Julianka before anyone else did.  [hall2_tongue]  [hall2_cheesy]  And when someone makes that sort of humorous reference, well, it's fair game for others to run with - especially in a similarly humorous manner.  [hall2_grin]

As for starting a whole thread, though, well, that would probably be a bit too OT for this forum.  [hall2_smiley]  But there are plenty of other forums/blogs that would welcome it. And if you ever do decide to go that route, well, by all means feel free to post a link for any forum readers who might be interested in it.  [b003]

What I meant by my statement was that he and Julianka were both on for a short period of time. A week's worth of episodes isn't that long compared to some of the other characters that were short-lived. And I didn't get to judge either of them really that much because we didn't get to see what they were like outside of the situations that they were presented in, which were largely the same.

I dunno, Magda is the only gypsy for me.  [female_skull]

Thanks for clarifying. Though, given several other posters seem to share his opinion, MagnusTrask obviously isn't, um, "standing" alone.  [hall2_grin]  (Though, given a few other opinions that have been shared through the years, Julianka might have a bit of competition from King Johnny's widow.  [hall2_wink])

I would LOVE to have Michael Hadge visit and share his memories with us  I know he was scheduled to attend some years back but couldn't make it.

Buzz, have you ever seen Hadge's all-too-brief cameo as a philosophical coffeehouse waiter in Mister Buddwing(1966)?  The same movie also includes a fun cameo by Nichelle Nichols.

I wish my memory weren't so tattered.  I'm delighted with the snapshot of "Mrs Purdy" in today's slideshow and trying to recall the name of the wonderful actress who portrayed her.  She also had a brief role during Leviathan and, of course, appeared as Mrs Pettione in hoDS.

Sophie Baker.
Because in 1975, I had a fling with a struggling New York actor whose name I can no longer remember.
He was a movie theatre usher in between gigs.

His roommate, who I got to know, was KC Townsend, who played Sophie!
About 10 years later I hooked KC up with our own Joe Integlia, who provided her with a tape of her 1897 episode.
That was my last contact with her.

I'm sad to report that I later found out that KC died in 1989, RIP.
