Quentin and Laura carried on their affair at the cottage, and after he left, she remained at Collinwood long enough to receive letters secretly sent from him before running off to join him.  So maybe her kids didn't know anything about them?  They managed to completely miss that Jenny was in the tower room, which totally boggles the mind.

[spoiler]I've always found that scene oddly reminiscent of the scene in '67 where Barnabas performs his Barbados ritual in front of Carolyn. In each scene NB's character's presence seems superfluous, except as a witness - and each is a victim of Barnabas.[/spoiler]

Wow, deja vu!

Current Talk '09 I / Re: Darks Shadows The Revival on Hulu
« on: March 23, 2009, 06:54:50 PM »
DS fan Kosmo has sent me a bunch of links over time to shows with DS alum that are on Hulu.  This weekend he found John Karlen's appearance on Lou Grant ("Gambling").  Others are:

Don Briscoe in I Dream of Jeannie ("A Secretary Is Not a Toy")
LP in Swat ("The Steel-Plated Security Blanket")
Dennis Patrick as "The Golden Man" in Lost in Space.
George Mitchell can be seen as Sitting Bull in the Time Tunnel ep "Massacre."
Thayer David's Charlies Angels ep called "Target Angels"
RD and LP in their Galactica 1980 ep "The Night the Cylons Landed"
Plenty of DS alum were in Hill Street Blues, including John Karlen in "Freedom's Last Stand" and "The Spy Who Came in From Delgado."
And The Rockford Files with Lara Parker ("Sleight of Hand"), Roger Davis ("The Kirkoff Case"), etc.

And we have a few more dates to play with now.  Quentin sent the cable to Alexandria on  April 27 1897

This aired April 28, which means the writers are trying to reconcile the date in the past with the real time date.  Which is a dangerous thing to do when your characters are time travelers.  Can you say 1795/1796?

Quote
Laura died in Alexandria March 7,1896.

I think that one was a bad choice.  Bad bad bad.  Nora said in #728 that she hadn't seen her mother for about a year.  And Barnabas said in the ep after this one that Quentin and Laura spent a great deal of time in Alexandria.  It doesn't fit that Laura has been dead for over a year.

This ep seemed to fly by.  Could it be because everybody in it is having sex, or at least the vampiric equivalent of it?

But if there's a theme running through it, it might be that the paid workers were all being used by the upper class.  It does seem that Quentin is developing genuine feelings, but Beth is is clearly uncomfortable with the situation such as it is while he's making excuses so he can keep getting what he wants.  Charity didn't want to even be with Barnabas at first, and after setting her straight he began to terrify her with his talk about disturbing a burial site, evil spirits, and books of the dead, sigh.  Punishing this naive girl for her great great great grandfather's sins seems cruel, even for Barnabas.  And as for Dirk, please, like Laura would want him if he wasn't a vessel for her master.

Laura got 3 dresses this time.  But she'll only need one hanger because her 18th c. dress was spectral and the blue one can now stand in the corner on its own.  [easter_tongue]

And what exactly was Charity's purpose in being present for the ritual?  To warm the settee?

Quentin is desperate to get her away from the kids, and he's apparently truly afraid for them.  We don't see enough in what we're shown to know why this is, but is this fear because he knows she's dead?  Has he reasoned out that she wants them for some other reason?... Is that what's setting off his alarm bells, or something else we never find out.

Yes, he knows she's dead and up to something scary that involves the supernatural.  In the first scene he says to Laura, "I know what will happen to them if you take them," and when she says he can't have Jamison, he answers, "But at least he'll be alive."  (Doesn't anybody care about Nora?)

Back to the original question of Trask versus Quentin: Rachel went to Worthington Hall when she was a small child.  I don't know when Trask started hitting on her, but my assumption is that it was when she was distinctly under the age of consent.  Quentin may have neglected on occasion to get a consent from the objects of his desire, but at least he wasn't a pedophile.

Totally agree.  Even in prisons, pedophiles are the lowest form of low.

Still, I remember being unpleasantly surprised by Quentin when I first watched Dark Shadows again in the late 1980s.  He never came across as a hypocrite, though.

One of his relatives will soon call him one.  And oh boy, did he deserve it!

Once again we get hints about a Barnabas who was interested in the occult, when we're shown no indication of this in 1795.

Though pre-seance, we're told that human Barnabas had traveled to Barbados, where he dabbled in forbidden arts and learned Hurley's numbers from a whispering warlock.  Or something.  Unfortunately, the shock of learning his wife was a witch made him temporarily forget all this.  [easter_wink]

By the way, when was concrete invented?  Would they have known about it in the boondocks of Martinique in the early 1790s?

According to The History of Concrete and Cement, ancient civilizations used concrete, but it was modernized into a basic cement in 1756 and something similar to the strong cement we use was invented in 1824.  So the zombies on Martinique could have been buried under something they couldn't dig through, especially since they didn't have the assistance of a powerful Angelique that wanted them to succeed.

As to the French word for concrete, you got me.  [easter_huh]

Vicki Winters is preggers!  The Mar. 27 issue of EW reports that Marley Shelton is expecting her first child, due in the Fall.  Hubby is producer Beau Flynn.

"The Bullseye" asks when "Susan Sullivan became old enough to play the horny old grandma," her role in the new series Castle.  I haven't seen the show because I heard it's just not good, but can you imagine DS' other former Playboy Bunny-- KLS-- in a similar role?  I think not.

If "The Dream Deceivers" was a published book or short story, Bette and Luciaphil were not able to find any trace of it back in 2002 using their library resources.   [idontknow]

Well, I thought Brokeback Mountain should have won for Best Picture too, so I don't think his loss is proof of your original statement that he "only won...because he died."

The LA Times had a poll recently asking which actor is most overdue for an Oscar.  The field was limited to 10, but last time I looked, Depp had garnered nearly half the votes.
