We got the best description we can hope for today of the accident that has been a major component of the show for nine months.  I'm sorry that a man (even a fictional, never-quite-named man) was killed, but I found the description of his death to be disappointing.  There were no fireworks in Sam's narrative.  It's possible that the original version of the accident, the one that didn't make it into the show, was much more interesting, since the original idea was for Roger to go down in flames.  And who can blame Dan Curtis for keeping Roger on the show, given what we've seen of Louis Edmonds?  A year later it would have been simple: Roger would have been killed trying to escape his fate, and a few weeks later we'd have had Louis Edmonds in a new character, and maybe the residents of Collinwood would have commented on the new character's uncanny resemblance to Roger, or maybe they wouldn't have noticed it.  But at this stage of the show, an actor played one character (or maybe two actors played one character), so the accident had to be played down so Louis Edmonds could be kept on the show.

Here's my question: if there had been socialized medicine in the US in the 1950s, so that Sam didn't have to worry about medical bills for his wife, what excuse would the writers have given him for keeping quiet about the accident?  Golly, imagine a world in which $15,000 would not only pay those medical bills but would even leave a little left over for some roses.  Of course, that was back in the days when $15,000 would buy you something more than a cup of coffee.

I liked the wrangling between Sam and Maggie.  I didn't enjoy it, but it struck me as true to life.  Maggie finds out that Sam did something unforgivable, and then Sam makes Maggie do the work of figuring out what comes next.  Yup, that rings true.  I wasn't particularly impressed with Kathryn Leigh Scott's acting - something about that didn't ring so true - but the scene was well-conceived.

At this point, I guess Willie's function is to give further proof that Jason is a bad guy, though that seems unnecessary: Dennis Patrick and Jason McGuire have, between the two of them, managed to make Jason's villainy quite clear.  I suppose, however, that Willie does cast an interesting light on the type of bad guy that Jason is.  When Jason is talking to Elizabeth, what he wants is a comfortable life with a money and high-class lodgings and expensive clothes.  If Jason enjoys Willie's company, that suggests that Jason also wants more rough-and-tumble fun than a comfortable life can give him.  What exactly is Jason's idea of a good time?  If Jason and Willie had been someplace else - someplace where Jason didn't have an image to maintain - when Willie started that fight in the Blue Whale, would Jason have joined in, fought dirty, and enjoyed it?

Willie!  Almost.

It's Burke vs. Roger again... Sam tells Burke, tense music... then Burke backs up a few paces, looks to his right into the camera, then same tense music plays again, end.   At these moments I always figure that the actor is at fault, and that the music would have played just once, if he'd done what he was supposed to do fast enough.  I don't know if I'm right.

I think Willie is only going to be of use to Jason if they have to take the money and run, perhaps with a burglary.   That may be the fallback plan for Jason, in case living at Collinwood indefinitely doesn't work out, with Willie thinking it's the only plan.   Or it may not yet have occurred to Jason that this doesn't have to be a short term operation.   If Jason gets entrenched at Collinwood, he may have the power to have Willie "escorted" out of town, and he might.   I'm not sure what Willie has to contribute with his "brawn" (Jason seems more formidable).   What is the plan?

Maybe there isn't a plan.  Maybe that's why Jason hasn't gotten anywhere in the world: because he can't think that far ahead.  He's smart, but he's not wise.

I'm not sure this is true.  I'm just throwing it out there.

Had Roger been killed off as originally planned, I doubt LE would have returned as a new character, and if so it may have been similar to Thayer David's return via a flashback to another time period.  It was too close to bring him back again, especially at this point in the show when a character was written out, the actor was gone.  Bill Malloy was to originally never been killed off, so he may have taken the place of Roger.
As was stated a while ago, it's amazing that Dennis Patrick played two characters so different.  Not only does Paul Stoddard look decades older, he is also a passive/weak character who takes a lot of abuse.  I can see how Jason manipulated Paul as well as Liz, as they both are his victims.

On another tangent, It probably can be theorized they do not really look alike as it never is stated so, which is something the present time tended to do more then the post 1795 flashbacks.
Whatever you may say about Mitchell Ryan, I loved Burke's triumphant, wolfish grin when he finally got Sam to admit that he wasn't driving the car.

Interesting about Roger's original fate. Lucky us that it didn't pan out that way--think of all that angry pomposity we would have missed!  [ghost_grin]

I always wondered how Jason and Willie ever got to become friends. Jason is calm, cool and collected whereas Willie is a hothead who will go off on anyone who so much looks at him the wrong way. Maybe Jason knew a relative of Willie's and promised to look after him...I don't know.

Now Vicki and Burke are dating...couldn't there have been any mention as to why she threw over Frank Garner? Because frankly I hear what a lot of folks have said along and that is he really is more age appropriate for her than Burke. Nothing against Burke but I think the writers missed an opportunity for an explosive triangle here.

Sam has finally confessed to both Maggie and Burke that he saw Roger, not Burke behind the wheel. Maggie is disappointed, while Burke is glimmering with triumph. And Sam knows that in all likelihood he will have to pay the piper along with Roger. But at least he'll be able to live with himself a bit better now.

Maybe the writers did miss an opportunity for a Vicki-Burke-Frank triangle, but I can't imagine Frank being explosive.  [ghost_wink]

Jason seems to be the brains and Willie the brawn of duo. Maybe Jason talked Willie out of a potentially disastrous situation somewhere back in time, then decided they should team up.

I doubt Willie is any sort of real friend to Jason.  He's more like a henchman who thinks he's a friend.   Jason can't wait to cut him loose, I'm sure.  I'll guess they met in the same jail cell.

I liked the initial awkwardness between Maggie and Sam after she returned from her walk. Sam affecting a forced, optimistic tone when announcing he hadn't had a drink and was going on the wagon, in an attempt to avoid that 800 lb gorilla in the room. How long before Sam finds that seat on the wagon uncomfortable and bails?

Hmm, a slight time ripple here. Last seen, Burke was in the Blue Whale with Vicki. How did he find out about Sam's call? Does the Collinsport Inn have a designated Burke Devlin runner?

Prototype Willie Loomis. It does make me laugh when he refers to Liz as "the Stoddard dame."

I believe Jason says something to the effect that things didn’t work out when Liz asks him what he did with all the money she gave him 20 years ago. He may have made bad investments or simply squandered it all away.
I get a kick out of these guys who think they're so clean, when all the time they're trying to cover up their dirt.

Roger and Jason should compare the membership cards in each other's billfolds, since I suspect they're both members of the "I Enjoyed My Money!" Club.

Apparently Frank has disappeared after moving his practice to Collinsport and left Vickie without a word. Maybe everything surrounding Laura has developed a collective amnesia to the players.  Anyway Vickie seems to have reverted to her previous casual dating of Burke despite telling him she was done with him. Little Willie refers to himself in the third person which is never a good sign and wants to move to Collinwood.
