Happy haunting, as a second season of the delightful hit comedy begins on a high note, with Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) welcoming the first guests to their ghost-infested B&B since the unfortunate floor collapse. “It’s like I’ve died and gone to heaven,” says one enthusiastic visitor (familiar sitcom face Don Lake). “If only it were that simple,” grumbles long-dead jazz siren Alberta (Danielle Pinnock). Shades of Bewitched when Jay implores Sam to tell the spirits not to invisibly spy on their guests, even when they learn this outwardly happy couple is renowned for spiteful Yelp reviews. And there’s discontent among the ghosts when Issac’s (Brandon Scott Jones) redcoat crush Nigel (John Hartman) reveals an aversion to one of their fellow spooks, causing the outcast to become so depressed that even the basement dwellers are bummed out: “We like to keep it light down there.” Few comedies are lighter and funnier than Ghosts.

The diverse dead residents of Woodstone Manor on CBS' version of the British sitcom of the same title proved to be the perfect people to spend much of 2022 with. Although they came from very different time periods, they learned to coexist well together over the years of their afterlives, and, in the second season that started in September, they have even begun to evolve. Specifically, such characters as Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky) and Thorfinn (Devan Long), who are a couple of the older ghosts and therefore have the farthest to go, became more tolerant and accepting, but even the youngest ghost Trevor (Asher Grodman) showed himself to be much more than just the "frat bro" persona he often projected. The show itself also evolved in its humor, going so far as to be meta with holiday themes and tropes, thanks, in part, to star Rose McIver's involvement in such a film franchise. And being that it is a traditional broadcast sitcom, it never failed to deliver multiple LOL-worthy jokes per scene.

For the moment, Hetty is more concerned about Sam (Rose McIver) meddling in new assistant Freddie’s (Mike Lane) personal life, being of the mind that showing human decency toward the help never ends well. Outside the house, Sasappis (Román Zaragoza) is smitten with ditsy car ghost Jessica (Nichole Sakura), but can’t contain his jealousy over the other spirits she encounters while on the road.

Revolutionary War ghost and “forgotten founding father” Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones) admittedly has “a chip on my shoulder” when it comes to the enduring fame of Alexander Hamilton, which is only exacerbated when a dismissive publisher tells Sam (Rose McIver) during her biographical book pitch that the late Capt. Higgintoot isn’t “a ‘room where it happened’ kind of guy.” Even so, Sam goes a bit too far in trying to soften the blow to his, and her, ego. Elsewhere in the haunted house, Thor (Devan Chandler Long) steals the episode as he tries to contain his anger impulses around Flower (Sheila Carrasco), who’s all about “good vibes.”

We’ve heard of people going to hell and back, but for 19th century dowager ghost Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky), it becomes an unpleasant reality when her despised robber-baron husband Elias Woodstone (Veep’s Matt Walsh) drops in via a literal portal from hell. He’s seeking his wife’s forgiveness, but he might as well be asking for hell to freeze over, until he contrives some special conditions. Elsewhere in the manor, Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) gets “Flowered”—accidentally walking through the eternally stoned hippie ghost (Sheila Carrasco)—and he may need to take another hit when he tries to recreate a recipe he concocted while under the influence for a powerful food critic.
