Very sad news... not OT
« on: October 14, 2002, 06:11:59 AM »
The local news in Los Angeles is reporting some very bad news...

A few stations are reporting that there's been a serious fire in the Hollywood Hills home of our beloved Dennis Patrick.  The reports sounded dire, but because nothing has been confirmed that's all I'll repeat for now, and I hope fans will say a prayer for him or light a candle or whatever they feel most comfortable doing.

:'(

How terribly sad!  I was stunned when I heard about this in the chat room.  Although I had earlier heard about the fire on the news, I had no idea that Dennis Patrick was involved.  He was one of my favorite people from DS, not just as an actor but as a personality.

IMHO, Patrick was one of the better actors on the show; in particular, he shone as Jason Maguire, a character who was both charming and hateful.  I always enjoyed seeing him at Festivals.  Though I never met him in person, he seemed like a very nice, down-to-earth fellow, and he had a great sense of humor.  He will be sorely missed. It's been reported that Dennis passed away this afternoon, his dog at his side, of smoke inhalation from a fire that began in a lower floor of his home.

One of his neighbors, who said he was much loved and will be very missed, said she's sending him an Irish toast tonite.  I couldn't have said it better.

So sad.  After your first message I had thought perhaps he had been able to get out.

very sad news indeed.....to die suddenly in an accident . but, on the other hand, he did live to be a ripe old age, and he left all of us with lots of memories than we still all share and love...From all i heard about it in the chat room, he was not in good health, on dialysis and having cancer, his future did not seem to be a real good one, or long...when i first heard he had died in a fire, horrible thoughts came on, but hearing further news, that he died in his bed, from smoke inhalation, one can hope that he was asleep, and didnt even realize what had happened and just left us as he slept..and he will never have to suffer the affects of cancer, or have to go thru the ordeal of dialysis anymore....moms last year while she was on dialysis was not a good one, as diabetes had shut her kidneys down and all but blinded her, and was almost a relief that she would never have to suffer anymore...So maybe instead of mourning his passing, that irish toast sounds like the way to remember him, to a long and happy and successful life.
its a sudden death that i know, my father wrote me to say that, my cousin, uncle jeremiah was, was very disturbed.

This is just such sad news to hear!  I always liked his Jason Maguire character and the way he did his "Irish Brogue."
For the poor guy to die this way, and with his dog by his side, is just so hard to bear.  And I would like to think like Tripwire said, that he went in his sleep and didn't have a clue as to what happened.
What a sad night.

Thanks Midnite for keeping us informed.

Shocked and saddened by the loss of Dennis Patrick.  What a wonderful, funny man.  Not that long ago John Karlen was talking about what a hard time he had not cracking up at Dennis' antics on the DS set.

Here are some pictures of Dennis reciting one of his infamous limericks prior to introducing John on stage at a Fest.  (He introduced him as "Karlen the Polack".)
When John took the stage he instructed Dennis (in a low voice) to "get the f**k outta here".  LOL

I did meet him at the 2002 Festival and I will treasure that moment. My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Patrick.
It is a good day because I am still ticking!
