Title: New Default Theme
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on August 16, 2008, 12:02:52 AM
The forum has a new default theme - and one that looks a bit differently depending on the resolution you're using on your monitor. For example, here's the display in Firefox at 800X600:

Click for larger image: 800.jpg (http://www.dsboards.com/800.jpg)

At 1024X768:

Click for larger image: 1024.jpg (http://www.dsboards.com/1024.jpg)

At 1440X900:

Click for larger image: 1440.jpg (http://www.dsboards.com/1440.jpg)

And at 1680X1050:

Click for larger image: 1680.jpg (http://www.dsboards.com/1680.jpg)

The theme looks best on widescreen 16X9 monitors, but will also work fine on a standard 4X3 monitor. Though for those of you who hate change, the Arcane Magic Theme is still available.  [ghost_smiley]  However, because the forum may be upgrading to SMF 2 before too long, that particular theme will no longer be upgraded should new features be added to the forum before the upgrade, and it will in all probability be discontinued altogether after the upgrade to SMF 2.

The new theme looks good, but I'm keeping mine set to Arcane Magic for now, because I like using what I'm used to. GameFAQs changed their default theme a couple years ago and I still have my account set to use the old theme on there.  [ghost_tongue2]

At the moment members are perfectly free to use any of the available themes - that's why they're there.  [ghost_smiley]  But just so everyone will know, when the forum upgrades to SMF 2, the new theme will be the only one that will still be compatible - all our other current themes will disappear...

Of course, at this point we have no idea when we'll make the switch - that's entirely up to when the SMF developers release a stable version of SMF 2. It could still be months down the road - or it just might be weeks...

The new theme is lovely, even if it is a bit bright. I'll use it when the switch occurs, but I just need a little more time to say farewell to Arcane Magic, which has been on here ever since I started lurking around here at the beginning of this year. XP

(Quick OT question to the staff, though - will the switch to SMF 2.0 result in any significant downtime?)
Title: Re: New Default Theme
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on August 16, 2008, 02:13:57 AM
(There shouldn't be too much downtime. The new files and PHP scripts can be uploaded while SMF 1.1 is still running. The only thing that will require the forum to be shut down will be converting the database. But that can be done right on the server, so it shouldn't take all that long.

All that being said, though, sometimes unforeseen things do happen...)

Here, here!!!!  I TOTALLY agree!!!  I LOVE this theme!!!!!  But for some reason, my little smiley that I "adopted" here (otherwise known as 9366) on the board [9366] looks like it's in the middle of an X and now the halo looks more like a bow or a propeller, but hey, as Gilda Radner would say (as Nadia Comaneci) it's "...STILL DARLING!!!!"

Yeah, whoever made that smiley didn't smooth out the edges of the circle. Unfortunately, we have a few smileys like that.  [ghost_sad]

You are not hallucinating, Patti. In this new theme certain members who have not chosen an avatar have the no-avatar mystery silhouette display in their posts.

I continue to tweak a few things and add a few others. You've probably noticed that the search feature is back in the header. (It's particularly useful when one wants to search the board that one is currently viewing.) And I've just added several new buttons to the main menu. The "guidelines" button currently does nothing but bring one back to the BoardIndex page - but that's only until I get the chance to write the routine to display the guidelines. However, all the other new buttons, some of which are only visible to members and others only to admins/mods, do exactly what one would expect.  ;)

More features will probably follow as I find the time to add them...

If I am understanding this correctly I can change the default profile on my end? I am having trouble with the new blue theme. I personally find it too bright and I have very bad eyesight. I am not spending as much time reading the boards because it bothers my eyes. If I can change it on my end how do I do it?

Choosing A Theme

This board is loaded with helpful topics/explanations. And most of the really important ones (like this topic) are stickied to the top of the board so they can be easily found.  [ghost_smiley]
Title: Re: New Default Theme

it took me much longer than I might have hoped to get around to designing something new. That was mostly because I wanted any new theme design to be able to be used with SMF 2.0 as well as SMF 1.1.5 (our current system) so that the forum wouldn't have to begin from scratch when we upgrade once a perfected version of SMF 2.0 is released.

Make that SMF 1.1.6 - I just installed an upgrade.  [ghost_smiley]

A new version of SMF 2.0 was also released, but it's still in beta (beta 4, to be exact), so presumably we won't be making the leap to 2.0 for a while yet...

Yeah, when the blue theme first appeared, I was having e-coli problems and the bright blue gave me a headache, so I rushed to choose the old theme.  I'm happy to report that the e-coli problems have gone away and the bright blue no longer gives me a headache, but I'm sticking with the old theme just in case.

Very nice, but then blue is my favorite color. It seems fairly easy on my eyes, too, i.e. not too great a contrast with too dark a background and too bright lettering.

I'm glad I went through this thread, though, because I wasn't aware of the Leviathan theme. My new laptop is a widescreen (HP Pavilion), yet the edges are cut off and the background is a bit blurred, so that on the right side I see half of a blurred snake, and on the left side half of the statue of a girl (?) in the antique store window. I didn't realize what this was the antique store window until I saw your screen capture in one of the posts above.

The Leviathans background can only really be appreciated on a widescreen monitor at resolutions higher than 1280X720.  ;)

Hmm, I checked in my control panel, and the screen resolution is shown as: 1366 x 768. But I don't see the full borders, only as I mentioned above.

The only thing I have to get used to is typing on this new keyboard.

I wonder if Emerald Rose's problem with her keyboard last April was the same one I'm having - the keys are slippery. I still can't get used to it. My finger also slip on the touchpad, and after an hour or so I start getting cramps in my forearm all the way to the elbow.
Title: Re: New Default Theme

Ah - so you're seeing something similar to this:

Click for larger image: 1366-3.jpg (http://www.dsboards.com/1366-3.jpg)

If you go back to the first post in this topic, you'll see that as the resolution gets wider with this theme, more of the background image shows. The background is designed so that all of it isn't seen unless someone is using a resolution of 1680X945. That's a bit too big for me - even on my big screen TV - but some people do like it. And if anyone goes with an even wider resolution, the background image will even begin to repeat, though it will remain centered. Here's an example at 1920X1080:

Click for larger image: 1920-3.jpg (http://www.dsboards.com/1920-3.jpg)

One thing to remember with a widescreen monitor, though, is that certain resolutions actually distort their display somewhat. A widescreen monitor is designed for aspect ratios of 16:9, which is decimally represented as 1.7777777. 1366X768 is very close to that (1.7786758) - but resolutions of, say, 1152X648, 1280X720, 1680X945 or 1920X1080 are exact. It all depends on personal preference and whether someone tolerates distortion. For example, a 4:3 aspect ratio (1.3333333), which is designed for a normal monitor and/or TV, is not at all good on a widescreen monitor/TV. Here's an example of 1280X960:

Click for larger image: 1280-3w.jpg (http://www.dsboards.com/1280-3w.jpg)

YUK - images and text are stretched out! The correct display (at 1280X720) looks like this:

Click for larger image: 1280-3.jpg (http://www.dsboards.com/1280-3.jpg)

The problems with this "new" keyboard arose from the fact that it is smaller and flatter, without the numbers on the right side (just on second row). I can't use the standard hand rest anymore, so my wrists and hands get more sore than they did before. I've gotten used to it by now, though.

Ah - so you're seeing something similar to this:

Exactly! Thanks for the additional explanations and screen shots, MB. I didn't really understand it before.

It was a little disappointing to learn that my screen resolution isn't quite a perfect match for the widescreen format, although as you show, it's pretty close. I think information like this should be explained somewhere when you purchase a computer.

I don't feel so bad now that I'm far from the only one not getting the full view of the Antique Shop window ... but if there are more of us who can't see the whole thing than those viewing on jumbo TV screens who can see it all, is there any possibility that you might consider letting more people see more of the background? [snow_smiley]

Thanks for sharing that, E.R. My new keyboard does have a number pad on the right side, but I originally learned typing on a manual typewriter where the numbers were in a row above the letters, and that's what my last computer had. I've used both, but don't really have a strong preference either way.

I'm hoping I don't end up with carpal tunnel syndrome. I didn't have a problem with my old laptop.

As you might have surmised, I change the background every time the storyline changes for the Watching Project. The backgrounds for 1968/1969 and 1897 showed a good amount of the images I'd used regardless of the widescreen resolution people might have been using. It was a harder task to come up with images that said Leviathans - and probably the lowest widescreen resolution that really does them justice is 1680X945 (and that one isn't even available for all monitors). But the background will be changing for 1970PT before too long - and what I have planned will work out better for the lower widescreen resolutions.  [snow_smiley]

I actually tracked this thread down because i am so impressed with the shots of Keith Prentice and Grayson Hall selected for the new theme.  Excellent work!

It's fascinating to see your screen shots of the theme, too.  Even on my MacBook laptop at home, I can't get the complete sidebars to display.  I do get much more of the images than I get on my office desktop computer, and that's regardless of whether I view the site in IE or Mozilla Firefox.

The full background only shows up in higher resolutions. However, anyone who might want to see the whole thing can use their browser's CTRL- option and keep hitting it until the full background appears. And to go back to the normal display, hit CTRL+ just as many times. And it's probably worth mentioning that CTRL+ and CTRL- only affect the current Web site being viewed. Even if one doesn't readjust, all other Web sites will still display normally.  [ghost_wink]

Excellent new theme!  The way it's displaying on my computer really heightens the resemblance between Joan Bennett and Alex Moltke.

I do miss the dramatic shot of Barbara Steele wielding that fan...

The return to this theme after Halloween finally brings the background for 28 quotes from Ep #10:

Better late than never. And it won't be around for long. But anyone who feels they didn't get to see it enough can always come to this topic.  [hall2_wink]

And. as usual, if your browser isn't showing this new background, then you need to clear your browser's cache.  [hall2_smiley]

Because it wouldn't have gotten very much exposure otherwise, I decided to leave the previous background around longer than it normally would have been on display. But the switch to the 28 quotes from Ep #11 of the '91 Series has finally brung the next new background:

And as always, if your browser isn't showing this new background, then you need to clear your browser's cache.  [hall2_wink]

As the one of you using this theme may have noticed, I've finally gotten around to making the new background for the switch to the 28 quotes from Ep #12 of the '91 Series:

And as usual, if your browser isn't showing this new background, then you must clear your browser's cache.  [hall2_wink]
