Current Talk '08 II / Re: NoDS Watching Project?
« on: August 31, 2008, 07:06:51 PM »
I for one do not own either film on VHS. I've been waiting for the releases of the films on DVD, as, last I checked, used VHS tapes of HoDS and NoDS were a bit more than I'd like to pay for a pan-and-scan unrestored version. HoDS is at least available on Amazon's digital rental service, AmazonUnbox, but I personally vote for delaying a Watching Project based on either film to either some date in the future or the release of the films on DVD, whichever comes first. That's just my opinion, however.

Little-known fact: Maggie raids people's closets. Never invite her over.

I play the Spot-the-PetofiBox™ game with my mother, as well.

Is clothing eligible? If so, I can't wait for the further discussions of 1970PT Quentin's orange sportsjacket and Maggie's quilted skirt.

Vampire biting is frequently used as a sexual metaphor, but I agree with Magnus that it's not literally sexual. It can be portrayed as anything from a heavily erotic experience to simply being downright brutal violence. Of course, the parallels between biting and sexual intercourse are there, and pretty readily apparent. That, combined with the fact that vampires are often portrayed as darkly romantic, is why you see the "biting = sex" themes in many vampire stories.

I'm personally not one for editing for consistency. I read somewhere that in the more recent DVDs of Star Wars Episode VI, they cut out some of the actors originally used and replaced them with those from the more recent prequel trilogy, such as cutting out the actor who originally played the role of the young Darth Vader in ghost form at the end of the film and inserting Hayden Christenson, who played the young Vader in Episodes II and III. This bugs me, despite the fact that I'm not a Star Wars fan.

And tripwire's description of the music's use in-game is mostly accurate; you must use an in-game instrument to play the music in certain places to gain access to hidden areas, and it is also used as the theme of one of the main characters, therefore making its way into a large portion of the game's score (and a smaller portion in some of the sequels; I believe it's played briefly in Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess).

My mistake, sorry. For some reason I was thinking that it only got one play. No idea why.  [ghost_huh]

Well, it was only played once, as best I can remember.

Current Talk '05 I / Re: What About an Animated Dark Shadows?

Yes, because they'd either have to dumb it down for the audience that a channel like Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon caters to, or attempt to sell it to a regular network. There's unfortunately not much middle ground with American animation these days; it's either very juvenile or very adult.

Though I wouldn't be thrilled with it because I'm not really into manga or anime (Japanese comics/cartoons), there's a possibility that a Japanese manga writer could find DS and want to adapt it to comic or cartoon form.

As far as my opinions on the cast go, I liked Joanna Going, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Roy Thinnes as Trask, both of the Barbaras (Blackburn and Steele), and Jim Fyfe. Michael T. Weiss was okay. I'm lukewarm on Thinnes as Roger, as well as Jean Simmons, who I thought was a bit old for the part. I did not like Ely Pouget's version of Maggie, I found Lysette Anthony to be a very mediocre Angelique, and don't even get me started on Ben Cross.

As for the 2004 pilot, I can't really say, having never seen it. I can't really picture Alec Newman as Barnabas, and I fully agree that it was a mistake for a "traditional" DS retelling to toss out the hair colors, as silly as it may sound. I always found it interesting how Curtis cast a blonde woman as the villain and a girl with black hair as the heroine. Casting Kelly Hu as Julia was also a mistake in my opinion - if Barnabas had an exotic beauty like her lusting after him, why would he bother with the girls who have no interest in him, and after at least one failed attempt at converting one of them to Josette?

I'm pretty sure Cobert wrote it specifically for DS.

And yes, after the first part, the similarities fade considerably.

I have my gripes with the revival, but the blood didn't bother me, either.

The site isn't being exactly reliable for me, either, but I was at least able to get to that. Try here and scroll down to "Legend of Zelda, The: Ocarina of Time" and click the first file marked "Zelda's Theme" and see if that works.

Love the original (though I wouldn't call it my favorite show ever, if I'm willing to watch 1,225 episodes of a show, it's fairly likely that I love it), lukewarm towards the revival.

I was listening to an orchestrated version of one of my favorite score pieces, Koji Kondo's "Zelda's Lullaby" from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, when I began to notice that parts of it sounded strikingly similar to Josette's Theme. It's more clear in a MIDI version, so here's one to compare.

Am I crazy, or is there a large similarity?

Oh, I know, I was just clarifying to make sure I didn't sound like I hated either of the Halls.  [ghost_tongue2]

I watched the episodes in quick succession on DVD, often skipping the end credits, and I've only seen most of the eps once (though they were very recent viewings), so I unfortunately cannot state a specific preference of directors. I didn't know she had written an autobiography; the only GH biography I knew about was A Hard Act to Follow, and I unfortunately haven't read it yet.
