No, he's not listening...he's hysterical.  Verbal incoherence is virtually Willie's trademark.

Besides, Adam WASN'T at Collinwood, and Willie knew it...he had just seen him sitting under a tree, right?

Sorry, Annie....gotta stick up for Willie.  You'd do the same if it was Quentin, wouldn't you?  ;)

Gee, Rainey, think we can share Willie--at least some of the time? Or, maybe he'd like both of us at the same time.

Annie,....I really don't think your mistake deserves hiding in The West Wing,....but if you're going to, say hello to Martin Sheen (President Bartlett). HE once stole a Tony Award caliber role right out of John Karlen's hands....they were the last 2 actors up for the part and Martin Sheen got it because the director thought he was "more vulnerable" looking! [shckd]

[bawl]  What an idiot!!!

I've often wondered.....John Karlen in "Apocalypse Now"?

Another is his irrational decisions.

I don't agree that his decisions are irrational.  Adam is irrational.....right now, Liz is irrational.  But Willie's decisions are just....simpleminded.  He can think a thing thru quite carefully from A to B....but as soon as C happens, he can't think his way around it.

Getting Maggie out of harms way required getting her out of town.  He tried to convince her to go herself.  He even thought about the expense and tried to hand her money.

(Where did he get that fifty, I wonder? Has Barnabas been direct depositing his pay in the Collinsport First Credit all these months and months?)

When she refused to go, he knew he had to get her out of that house by force.  He knew she wouldn't go quietly so he recognised the need for the chloroform.  He knew he had to hide her to keep her safe so he chose the most secret place he could think of.

The part he didn't think through was that she would refuse to believe him.  He didn't think about the fact that she doesn't really understand how much he loves her.    When you're telling someone you love the absolute truth, and desperately trying to save their life, it's hard to comprehend their refusal to believe you.

Willie's not irrational....please, next to Barnabas, Julia and Adam, he's the Voice of Reason!

He's just not quite smart enough to pull off what he knows needs to be done.

From a dramatic point of view, Willie may represent the frightened child in all of us(the audience)in terms of his reaction to all of the horror.  While others seem calm, or at least rational, Willie, for me, represents a more realistic, organic point of view.  His reactions of fear and helplessness seem more in line with what many people, particularly children(a vast part of the original DS audience), would really experience if faced with a horrific situation like vampirism or being forced to rob graves. :o  He makes an excellent witness to the goings on, a conduit between the audience and the dramatic machinations of the show and its characters. Little David Collins served the same function at various times in the show, at least in terms of the child-audience point of view.

Fascinating analysis, petofi.....I never saw it quite that way.  You're absolutely right in describing Willie's behaviour as child like, of course.

Which makes me wonder if the producer and the writers actually thought that concept out, or simply stumbled into it like lucky blind mice?  Given the 'quality' of the current story line, I'm inclined to go with the blind mice theory!   ;)
