Whenever I see this...
« on: October 28, 2023, 07:58:30 PM »
...entry in the Robservations slideshow for October 27th (currently on display until 7pm ET) -

1967: Ep #350 - Barnabas: 'I wouldn't do
anything to hurt my own flesh and blood.'

 - I always flashback to Jonathan Frid's July 1968 appearance on The Mike Douglas Show because he brought a kinescope of that scene with him.

I tape recorded that appearance but I have no idea if I still have it or if I taped over it. I wish it had turned up on one of the MPI DVDs but I don't think it has (I still haven't watched all those sorts of extras). And one funny thing about that show is I've seen in listings of the guests that Barbara Parkins was the co-host, and I used to really like her back in the day, but I have no memory of her having been on with Frid. The one and only thing that continues to really stand out in my mind is how they showed the kinescope...

MB, I'm a huge Barbara Parkins fan. I was watching that day and remember the show well. Barbara was the co-host for that week. I clearly remember Barbara and Frid discussing the erotic nature of vampires. One of the other guests that day was Trini Lopez, if memory serves me correctly. I don't why I remember these things so vividly but I do. That week of episodes seems to be lost. The guy who runs Barbara's Facebook page is actively looking for them.

I think I remember seeing that episode of “The Mike Douglas Show” in July of 1968. In addition to co-host Barbara Parkins, legendary jazz singer Joe Williams was also a guest on that show. When the clip of the aged Barnabas attacking Carolyn was played, Mr. Williams almost fell out of his chair, laughing with great delight!

And, I agree that Barbara Parkins is a wonderful and, obviously, a very beautiful actress. The first time I ever saw Ms. Parkins on television was on an episode of “Leave It To Beaver.” Barbara Parkins portrayed Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver’s comely baby’s sitter and was just before she joined the cast of ABC’s popular night time soap opera, “Peyton Place.”

I received a handwritten letter from Barbara Parkins in response to her appearance in an adaptation of Taylor Caldwell's Testimony of Two Men. Barbara was fine as a family matriarch but it really stretched credibility for her to be playing David Birney's mother. Especially since she looked at least ten years younger than she did.

My favorite comment when it comes to actresses not being allowed to age in Hollywood and how all too often they're called upon to play parts older than themselves, mostly because the actresses who would be the right age have been put out to pasture and are considered unhirable came up when a producer remarked that, as a male, Zac Efron will be allowed to get work for as long as he wants to, but as a female, pretty soon Miley Cyrus would only be able to get roles like Zac Efron's grandmother...

Meredith Baxter Birney starred with her then-husband David Birney in the short-lived 1960s tv comedy, “Bridget Loves Bernie.”

I remember reading in Ms. Baxter Birney’s autobiography that David Birney was about as “charming” to her as had been PT 1970 Quentin Collins towards his wife, Maggie Evans Collins.

My parents could not miss an episode of Bridget Loves Birney, Bob, because it was so Catholic.  It was also so Jewish, too, but that was also perfectly fine by my parents.  My parents were as Catholic as Catholic can be, but on Sunday afternoons, they never missed going to the synagogue because that's when the temple had, as my dad would say:  "da best bingo in town."  He would provide proof by saying:  "da Cat'lics, dey got crap for prizes, but da Jews, dey got da good prizes - I tells Faddah Kozaziski to look at what dat Rabbi gives, but duz he listen? - no."  Bridget Loves Birney did more for "ecumenical" relations than anything else.

I tape recorded that appearance but I have no idea if I still have it or if I taped over it.

I still have no idea if I still have that The Mike Douglas Show, but something I did discover on the same tape as the 1970PT promo is an August of 1970 appearance Frid made on The Dick Cavett Show. I haven't listened to the whole thing but I do recall that in part he discussed hoDS, which would have been opening in about a month afterward. Although I don't think he likened hoDS to a porno film, like he did when he appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson later in the year, it will be interesting to hear what he did say because as we know he was not at all pleased with how Barnabas is presented in the film and he became less and less diplomatic the more he talked about it. But the Cavett appearance was most likely the first time Frid talked about the film during a TV interview, and it had yet to open, so he was probably more diplomatic.

After I actually find the time to format the recording for posting, I'll most likely post it in the hoDS topic: "And Now The Return of Another New Slideshow (Sort of), Part 2 [**Now featuring alternate versions of scenes - see replies...".
