Nice read. I also followed the link from the article to "11 DS Actors You Didn't Know Were Gay" and found new information there as well.

Thanks for posting this, I enjoyed reading it! I always see it mentioned that Frid was not a fan of the darker version of Barnabas in HODS. It makes me wonder if he attempted to alter the script at all. One would assume that he read it and agreed to be part of the film knowing how Barnabas was being portrayed. Perhaps his objections went unanswered due to the tone Curtis was going for in the film?

I was excited that DS was on Pluto TV, even though it seems like they are just running through the same batch of episodes, similar to the way Hulu only had a few hundred episodes at a time.

However, I have been checking out DS on Tubi as well and I'm glad that it's available for free in its entirety somewhere. It was a major loss when they took it off Amazon Prime and I was wondering what would happen. It really speaks to how we live today that I have all the DVDs, but it's such a pain to dig them out! LOL

I like the HBO Max idea. Really, any streaming service would allow the series to conquer more adult topics without having to bend to the will of primetime censors. They could also do a darker take than what the CW is after, I'm sure.

I got Quentin. Happy with that result. Also, I feel like this quiz is a repeat of one I took in the past--a lot of the questions seemed vaguely familiar.

I find this discussion very interesting. As someone who didn't really discover DS until around 1999/2000, I was immediately taken with Julia. First I found her annoying as a foil to Barnabas in the early episodes, but as their relationship developed she became very endearing and I cared for her. I think one of the hallmarks of the series is not the lost love between Barnabas and Josette, but the lost love between Barnabas and Julia. It's like the Mulder/Scully effect--will they ever get together or not? Many shows were based around this.

I don't know how intentional it was on the part of the writers, but Grayson certainly played it with a heavy undertone of Julia being in love with Barnabas and being willing to sacrifice her life for him, all of her own free will. This relationship differs from someone like Willie, whose relationship was bound by blood and Barnabas' control.

Thank you!!

It would be interesting if the new DS that the CW has been looking at could some how address this plot line, even if Vicki was not a character on the show. Maybe her child comes to Collinsport or already lives there and is investigating Vicki's background and somehow uncovers the truth.

Whether that actually happens will remain to be seen, especially given that there is precious little news about a potential new DS. But it's nice that JB attempted to settle the story herself. She had to know the fans were dying for an answer.

I remember watching this clip years ago. I believe it was part of the DS DVDs extras at some point. When I watched it I thought it was great that even JB believed Elizabeth to have been Victoria's mother. Although her word doesn't necessarily confirm it as cannon, I think it's a widely held belief within the fandom that this is the truth.

If only that plotline hadn't been dropped during the early run of the show, it could have provided a great opportunity to explain the origins of Vicki during a flashback, similar to 1897, but maybe only going back 20-30 years to show Elizabeth as a young woman.

Also, for those who have read "Heiress of Collinwood" by Lara Parker, you may remember that this was addressed. I was highly disappointed in Ms. Parker's take on the story, especially because it seemed to stretch the truth and the timelines quite far in order to somehow make this all work.

Personally, a lot of these earlier episodes seem like filler episodes to me. There's just not much going on in the story and the pacing is quite slow. It would be great if there were some sort of set that combined the best of the best early episodes, similar to have they have the "Haunting of Collinwood" and "Curse of the Vampire" collections.

Awesome! And not too far away from me, though I wouldn't drive hours just to attend LOL. I wish there was something like this closer to my area, I wonder if there would be even enough interest to get a good group going. I'd imagine it would be something that would start off slow and build to a decent size group as word of mouth spreads. Also, I wonder what the legalities are of showing DS in a setting like this in terms of copyright?

Thanks for posting this! A very interesting read about the behind the scenes activity of a classic 90s film, IMO. I've always loved the uniqueness of Sonnefeld, so I might have to pick up this book at some point.

Current Talk '24 I / Re: February 20th In DS History
« on: March 06, 2020, 03:30:22 PM »
Just getting around to reading this post. Great observations MB! It seems that February 20th was always a hot time for DS! February sweeps is a thing in soaps if I remember right so maybe that is an explanation behind why this date was usually exciting for episodes. I'm sure it's probably a coincidence that THESE episodes in particular ended up on the same day, but nevertheless I wonder if it was sweeps time for them and the writers planned out to have some sort of plot twist etc around this time?

Funny that on the DVD version the boom mike is not seen but in the original version it was. Reminds me of complaints when Buffy the Vampire Slayer was first put on Hulu in widescreen and in certain episodes you could see show staff standing on the edge of the screen or you can see production equipment, like a boom mike, in the shot as well. For some people these things might take away from it. But for me, I'm always interested to see what it looks like behind the scenes. I can either block it out or pay attention to it.

These early episodes try to make a lot out of a little: a simply storm, a creaky door opening, etc etc. Compared to later episodes that are sometimes a whirlwind of activity, it's almost cute at what they attempted pre-Barnabas. Though I will note that some stretches of the later episodes (particularly where 1897 is concerned) can tend to go on and on for too much time just repeating the same plot lines.

I can appreciate the more simple approach in the earlier episodes when I watch them because they truly are working to set up the atmosphere.
