Current Talk '13 II / weird DS dream
« on: October 13, 2013, 12:09:57 PM »
anyone have a weird DS dream lately?

I rarely dream about the show. once in awhile one of the characters makes it's way into the background of whatever else i'm dreaming about but not the series per se...

but for some reason last night I had this very dry and literal dream about it. I dreamt that the 1968 "supernatural" cast...Robert Rodan, Marie Wallace, Humbert Allen Astredo, etc...were suing she show's producers because they felt that they were carrying the series' plot but that the old main cast...Joan Bennett, Louis Edmond's, Alexandra Moltke, etc...were paid more money and received "top billing". it was very detailed and the actors made a strong case in their argument(it's not like they didn't actually have a point).
unfortunately I woke up before the results of the lawsuit were revealed. [hall2_rolleyes]

Calendar Events / Announcements '13 II / OT Hawkes Harbor
« on: September 29, 2013, 07:16:36 PM »
a neighbor recently moved and left a stack of books out in the hall...

one of them was 'hawkes harbor' by s.e. hinton. I picked it up.

can someone please refresh my memory on this. doesn't this have some sort of loose DS connection? is it a backstory of some sort on the willie loomis/jason mcquire relationship? I feel like it was something of that nature.

has anyone read it? is it worth a read?

I saw this piece online and although not quilted and quite as heavy as that that keeps maggie evans warm on cold collinsport nights it looked familiar...

Calendar Events / Announcements '13 I / no new members since the film???
« on: February 17, 2013, 03:48:23 PM »
hey remember when the chatter around the film was that it was going to bring this huge influx of new people to the fanbase?

have we actually seen evidence of that anywhere? there's been much grousing amongst the OS fanbase and some reluctant converts to the film's offbeat sensibility. many of this board's establishment enjoyed it to be sure...

but there have been no new members added in two years...well before the film even began production. is membership down/disabled for some reason? have there been any requests for new memberships?

and any word on how that cruise is filling up? [snow_huh]

Calendar Events / Announcements '13 I / bella in bazaar
« on: January 12, 2013, 01:01:44 PM »
the february issue of harper's bazaar does a round up of 2012's "best dressed" models and actresses...

featured is "aussie stunner" bella heathcote. although she's just referred to as johnny depp's "love interest" in 'dark shadows'(no need to try and explain the vicki/maggie/josette pastiche to the uninitiated)they images that accompany her mention were done on the international ds press tour and indeed heathcote was stunning and quite chic.

in an updo and heavier bang than she wore in the film and frocks by chanel and pucci bella turned it out!

Calendar Events / Announcements '12 II / when was my ascension?

i just noticed my board status had been upgraded to DSF god. [hall2_shocked]

when did that happen?

all of the recent chatter about NoDS must have entered my subconscious...

remember the old "after school specials" from the 1970's that usually dealt with "teen issues" like drugs and petty crimes like shoplifting? they were sort of little morality plays that aimed to dole out an important "lesson". in the ones involving drugs there was usually a scene where an authority figure, a parent or teacher, finds some sort of drugs or drug paraphernalia(like a bong or potpipe)amongst a teen's belongings(like in a locker or under a bed)and "confronts" them with the evidence in hand. in effect stages an "intervention". there are denials. followed by tears. followed by confessions and remorse and "tough love" recriminations and important lessons learned all around and a sappy ending all in under an hour with plenty of time for commercials for fruit loops.

anyways the other night i had such a dream. this time it was ME who was stashing some sort of drugs(i cannot recall what)in my room. the people who found said drugs and confronted me were none other than QUENTIN and TRACY! not david selby and kate jackson mind you. for some reason they were "in character". i tried to deny it. i flubbed for excuses. i called tracy a "nosy b*tch". but they were having none of it! i was busted!

this dream puzzles me for numerous reasons. one being i do not do drugs or even drink. so there must be some hidden meaning or subtext at play. more to the point selby and jackson are two actors from the series i've always been completely indifferent to so it's strange that they would be the ones i butt heads with in a dream world.

i never dream about the show per se but once in awhile one of the characters makes it's way into the background of whatever else i'm dreaming about. i recall one dream where carolyn and laura stood as mute witnesses in the background. but it's funny here it was so interactive and confrontational. Current Talk '12 II / cursed...or charmed???
« on: October 07, 2012, 02:54:25 PM »
the film's mixed bag reception is food for thought...

the OS had a successful, if relatively brief, five year run. however all of the attempts at retelling the story since it's cancellation have fallen prey to some sort of misfortune or another.

NODS was edited with a buzzsaw and is a disjointed mess as a result. the 1991 revival series butted heads with a war in the persian gulf and was cancelled after just 12 episodes. the 2004 series imploded on the launching pad. and the depp/burton film was largely greeted within the fandom with wails of discontent and much of the mainstream entertainment media seems to want to portray it as a "flop" whether that's accurate or not.

true there are the audiodramas and comic series in current release but it's more than fair to say those are niche products that the public at large are unaware of(and IMO they're both dreadful).

so why is it so difficult to retell this tale in a successful way? it's a great story, but is it too colossal and unwieldy to reign into a digestable story to attract the attention of a new audience? after all the OS was a daily serialized drama that gradually unfolded over years.

at the same time the show boasts a fanbase as loyal as any series could ever expect or ask for. and someone always has their eye on it for revival. so what do we think? [hall_huh]

Current Talk '12 II / are the big finish dramas canon?
« on: September 19, 2012, 02:38:09 AM »
Now to write an audio drama for Big Finish to establish this as canon.

are there those who consider the 'big finish' productions to be "canon"? [ghost_huh]

Current Talk '12 II / deppshadows "watching project"
« on: September 16, 2012, 07:23:52 PM »
apologies if this thought has already been posted but how about this...

on october 2nd the DVD of the depp/burton DS film will be released. obviously we will not all pick it up at the same time. but how about picking a night in late october, near halloween, when we all sit down and view it at the same time and then post out thoughts like in the "watching project".

the mods will pick the time and set the rules but it could be fun, right?

Current Talk '12 II / the witchcraft nonsense in 1840
« on: September 16, 2012, 01:48:47 AM »
i'm still desperately slogging through the 1840 episodes...

however once the "witchcraft" nonsense takes on steam i almost have to just walk away. i mean am i missing something here? why on earth are people in the middle of the nineteenth century, the dawn of the modern age, running around babbling about witchcraft??? why is it being taken seriously? by anyone?

by this point in the run did the writers just assume that those "kids that ran home from school" wouldn't know enough about history to understand that this concept was two hundred years out of date? or because it's DS are we just supposed to throw common sense out the window?

or was it just an excuse for jerry lacey to revive his unbearably obnoxious character from 1795?

incidentally who the heck is david selby supposed to be playing here? he looks and acts and talks just like "real time" quentin right down to the glued on sideburns. i'm surprised they didn't try and give him that stupid gramophone just for the sake of brand continuity. is the viewer just supposed to associate him with "real" quentin and thus give a darn what happens to him? i mean he's supposed to be a different character, right?

this storyline kills me. [ghost_rolleyes]

Current Talk '12 I / 1840 ben stokes question
« on: June 17, 2012, 06:50:02 PM »
i am currently trying...for the third time and with limited pleasure...to get through the 1840 episodes.

i'm confused about ben stokes status. here he's still serving as some sort of manservant at collinwood...

but when professor stokes first showed up in 1968 didn't he tell everybody that ben had been released from his indentured servitude by joshua, granted a piece of land outside town, and lived out his old age there?

i suppose continuity is not the series' strong point(especially by 1970)but how did stokes' status change? this time period always has me at sixes and sevens. [ghost_huh]

Calendar Events / Announcements '12 I / brooklyn DS "tribute"
« on: April 07, 2012, 01:28:18 PM »
when i was walking home in brooklyn last night i walked past this dive, hole-in-the-wall bar on the brooklyn/queens expressway called "boulevard tavern".

to my surprise out of the corner of my eye i saw in the window there was a poster featuring the familiar 1968 shot of barnabas and julia around b's coffin alongside flyers for other upcoming events.

turns out that on saturday april 28th from 10pm-4am there will be a DS "tribute" of some sort at the pub. i'm not sure exactly what that means. i inquired with the bartender and he said they would be showing episodes of the OS on monitors throughout the evening. there are also DJs "cyclonus", "jose" and "charlie the slut" spinning at the event.

my 4am nights are long over but i plan to check out at least the early part of the event to see what it's all about.

the address of the place is 579 meeker avenue, brooklyn ny.
