Title: Penny Dreadful
Post by: michael c on July 03, 2016, 10:50:31 PM
FYI the first two seasons just popped up unexpectedly on Netflix. it's never been streamed there before.

it will likely be several months before season 3 arrives.

It was a plotline linking Vanessa with a demonic Egyptian Goddess Amunet (the lore about this figure was completely made up so far as I am aware).  Her full manifestation on Earth was to usher in a new apocalyptic age.  The storyline was dropped abruptly at some point during season 1 and I don't think it was ever mentioned again.

thanks. i completely forgot about that...

i haven't seen the third season yet but it sounds like Vanessa was in full victimization mode again. i was not happy or comfortable with the direction they took the character in season two. she was too weak and disempowered.

if the point was to showcase Green's ability to chew the scenery to shreds job well done. but i missed the glamorous, mysterious, powerful figure she was one season one.

the fallout (or at least the "morning after" awkwardness) of Ethan and Dorian's incendiary, Absinthe induced hookup, was never adressed either.

not even a shame walk.  [ghost_rolleyes]

Yeah.  I thought there should have been at least one more Ethan/Dorian scene.  I found some of the choices Logan made with the storyline and scripting to be less than inspiring as time went on.  It also became an even more heavily "Catholic" metaphysical universe.  The big finale with Vanessa's confrontation with the Devil at the end of season 2 really did not work for some viewers.  I did find it a cool scene.

first season Vanessa was insanely self sufficient. she kicked ass and took names...

i understand the need to create the powerful love story for the character but with season two she needed too much "saving". too much "rescuing" from Ethan and the other men on the show. it gave her a note of the "damsel in distress" which was decidedly NOT the original premise of the character.

In that early scene, I think in the first episode, where he comes to the house and she does a Tarot reading for him, she's so completely in control. Though we also see her already having a meltdown with her prayers in her bedroom.

A friend is watching an AMC series called PREACHER and from the couple of YT clips I played, there's a cool strong complicated female character in that named Tulip.  You might want to have a look.  It has elements of supernatural horror which I think usually is not your genre. I suggest checking out the youtube clips before trying to watch an episode.  I don't get a signal so I am not bothering with it...

Not that this comes as any sort of a surprise, but:

Emmy Nominations 2016: The Biggest Snubs - Eva Green, Penny Dreadful (http://tvline.com/gallery/emmys-nominations-snubs-2016-photos/#!3/emmy-snubs-2016-eva-green/)

The surprise would have been if she had been nominated - not that she doesn't totally deserve a nomination - she most certainly does - but with the exception of the American Horror anthology, it seems the Emmys have no idea that the other shows in the horror genre exist.

But then, a pass through the entire slideshow shows that an awful lot of deserving actors/shows were passed by...

I was behind reading this article:

Emmy Predictions: Variety’s TV Critics Make Their Picks (http://variety.com/2016/tv/columns/2016-emmy-favorites-prediction-variety-tv-critic-picks-1201856099/)

But I'm glad I didn't skip it because of this:

"Lead Actress, Drama
Saraiya: Eva Green isn’t on this list, so I’m just ignoring the nominees."

(Although, as much as I can support that sentiment, I was beyond thrilled that Tatiana Maslany won because I'm a huge Orphan Black fan...)

Honestly, I didn't know an extremely large majority of the nominees, actors or shows.

Season 3 of PD is available from Netflix's DVD plan, if anyone still does that...

This year, I was able to finally catch up to the rest of the world with Game of Thrones through their DVD plan also. I really enjoy the DVD extras on things they don't broadcast. Commentaries, and bonus round-table discussions among cast members are very insightful.

It is my understanding that PD was released on Blu-ray yesterday, Oct. 4th.

Much to my delight, I was scanning thru Netflix on a friend's TV and Penny Dreadful season three is available. I watched ep 2 (loved it) and am excited to continue on. I get Netflix at home so in this case things couldn't be duckier.

Caught ep three yesterday and was enthralled and disgusted. Lovin' this interpretation of Dracula tho did figure out it was him before the reveal (I guess everything can't be a surprise). I'm really intrigued by the creature's plot direction. Ethan's journey is interesting but not nearly as exciting as the aforementioned. I really like Treadaway as an actor but marveling over him is about as much interest I can muster for the Jekyll & Hyde story (other than knowing that whatever happens will be beautifully acted and off the chain). The imagery of the asylum is SO disturbing. Dorian & Brona - that seems so way over the top - I mean I had to marvel at the audacity of it but so far it is the least interesting subplot for me - mostly because of the gore. Maybe too because I miss the beautiful gauze lens Dorian.

Patti Lupone is marvelous.

Oh? ;)

I am enjoying this season. I think I am four or five eps in. No complaints. Eager to see how it all ends up. Still definitely hooked.

I can't imagine how they are going to satisfyingly tie everything up what with how everyone's story lines seem all so separated but I guess I'd be foolish to think that at this point everyone is going to live happily ever after or even meet up in the final episode for one big party. I really am enjoying this season tho.

Watched finale last night. WOW!

Even knowing that Vanessa dies, not knowing how and why didn't take much away from it except maybe the shock factor. I enjoyed the third season very much, my favorite of the three I'd say tho they were all superb, IMO.
