Title: Did You Notice?
Post by: Brandon Collins on October 19, 2006, 03:35:07 AM
Did anyone notice in an 1897 episode that the stiars in the Old House were missing from the set? I can't for the life of me remember what episode it was, but I do remember, I think, that Evan Hanley has the whole eye-hanging-out-on-his-face thing going on, and that Magda had locked him behind the door leading into the cellar. I swear it looks like the stairs aren't there in the set. Like they were on wheels or something and they had pulled them out and just the wall was there. I'm trying to find it myself but I've been having trouble with it so I was wondering if anyone else knew of it.

Also, recently when watching a episode on Set 15, I noticed that in the episode where [spoiler]Petofi gets his hand back and shows Barnabas the future, with David being hysterical and not making sense[/spoiler] and Julia is sitting in the drawing room reading a book, with all her make up on, that when Grayson returns in the same episode as Magda that she is still wearing all the makeup, and blue eye shadow. This struck me because you don't ever see that on Magda.

And I'm starting to get annoyed at everyone--Charity, Tim, etc etc--calling her Mugda. I always thought it was pronounced Magda. Like MAGgie, and MAGazine.

I am now imagining the caption picture with Evan standing there with his melted face in the foyer or whatever they called it, and I get the feeling there's a missing stairway, too.   Something buried far, far in the back of my mind bothered me about that photo, without coming close to consciousness.    An unexpected side effect of using the Hand, I guess.

I noticed that too, the staircase missing and you are absolutely right! I don't remember what episode either but I think it was more than one.

I think it is in Set 14. I really want to get a closer look at it but I was doing something else with DS playing in the background and just happened to catch it, and didn't think to stop it until I thought about it later. I hate to go back and look for it through all those episodes, but it really is killing me so I might just have to! [female_skull]

If you *do* go back and find the ep #, please let us know what it is as now you got me curious!   [hall2_wink]
Title: Re: Did You Notice that they switched Collinwood around?

Speaking  of "Did you notice," I was just watching DVD Volume 11, Disk 4.  This is an David/Amy in Quentin's room time period, Mrs. Findley and the buried alive phobia.  Several times in various episodes they show a shot of Collinwood that I wasn't quite familiar with where it's the tower and a short part of the builiding on the right hand side.  After hitting pause several times and squinting a few times, I realized that they had taken a shot of the tower and the left hand side of the usual shot of the house and just REVERSED it.

Freaked me out until I solved the mystery!  LOL!

I've just started watching the 1897 storyline and have viewed through to Ep. 705.  In Ep. 702, we see the staircase behind Barnabas and Magda in this picture.  I'll keep a lookout for "no staircase".

Good eye Angelique Wins! I didn't even notice in the first place lol! So I doubt if I had've noticed it that I ever would have figured out just what was so different about it.

And thanks DSBF! I hope that you find what I saw. Keep a close eye, as it's not too noticeable (I don't think) unless you're looking for it or are watching closely. I think I only noticed it when they were panning to and from Nicholas with his dangly eye on the other side of the cellar door.  [female_skull]

Boxset 14 disc 4 episode 766.

I just happened to be capping from this boxset to make new icons and there it was! Or wasn't I should say.

To see the capture:

"I guess when Baaaanabas said no playing on theee stairs, he really meeant it!"

Thank you so much arashi!!!! I knew I wasn't going insane! There it is, in all it's glory. The stairless-Old House. I wonder what happened to them that day. Any speculation?

One of my favorite things about watching Dark Shadows is the stray camera angles, like this one, where we catch more of the set and the surrounding area than we are supposed to. High shots that reveal the lights, shots too far to the right so that we catch the edge of another set in the picture also.

Looks to me like there is a little corridor back there behind where the stairs would be. Where does that lead? The dressing room? Make up? The can? Or perhaps THAT is where the characters always walk to when they say they are going to the study!

Looking at shots like these that reveal more than they are supposed to really let me put myself in the studio and try to find my way around. Unfortunately, not many of them are very good WIDE shots of everything else. I guess that's why the camera people kept their jobs lol.

Finally, speaking of "Did You Notice?"....

I'm watching the Leviathan storyline right now, and I noticed in one of the earliest episodes, I think it may be the one when Carolyn brings Julia to the antique shop for the first time, a stage hand is walking back and forth outside the shop, clearly seen through the window! lol

Yes!, and done.

I think she was pacing about, waiting for Barnabas to come through the cellar door.  She'll have some 'splainin' to do, and not just about Quentin.  ;)

The Old House set was not permanent (only the Collinwood drawing room and foyer were), so it was sometimes dismantled during the course of shooting the series.  But Frid once told a convention audience that the OH set came the closest to being one as well.

One floor plan that's easy to get your hands on is in the DS Alamanc (p. 26 or 126, depending on the edition); during that day's episode [spoiler]in which Carolyn is murdered,[/spoiler] the Old House and Collinwood sets were at opposite ends of the studio.  It also looks like taking a slight left path out of the CW drawing room toward the "study" will lead someone into an outside wall, but an actor taking a slight right path might indeed find him/herself on another set.

Has anyone noticed that when Sam Evans or Roger Collins enter the Blue Whale that the window with the wavey seascape design would be an interior type shot? The door that they come into from the location shooting is on Barister's Wharf. The studio shot is completely different. They have you believe that the Blue Whale front door is directly on the water. Well, maybe we're seeing it from Sam's drunken point of view.

I love, love, love the location shots. Vicky Winters pulling up in a  car along the Collinsport Inn, wearing a completely different outfit(and hair-do)than she is when she visits Burke Devlin at his hotel room at the inn. Continuity! Please!

i love the location shots too.

it's funny because they only filmed them a few times so no matter what the character is wearing in the episode itself they are wearing the same few things in the exteriors.

if i recall during the episode where vicki walks along the beach and discovers THE PEN she is wearing her hair in pigtails which she never wore on the show itself.

Well, you can just undo pigtails when you come in, I suppose.

There's a post I never expected to make ever in my life...

Nah.  Your comments are much too enjoyable for that.

But, if you join MB and me on our next visit to Newport, and you were to put on a sleeveless dress and don a black wig with pigtails for a stroll on the beach, then... maybe.  [wink2]

The pigtails are only the tip of the iceberg.  ;)  Vicki leaves Collinwood wearing a white trenchcoat, then she's on the beach wearing a black coat, and then she's back at Collinwood with the trenchcoat.  :o  :D

Another glaring wardrobe/location footage mishap happens when David is seen wearing pajamas and a robe just prior to location footage of him looking out a window (to watch Roger drive away) in which he's wearing a jersey, and then he's seen wearing the pjs and robe immediately after.  ::)

That they actually managed to have Carolyn come into Liz' room in Ep #275 carrying a kerchief in her hand after she'd been seen in location footage walking on the beach wearing a kerchief is actually the amazing thing!  [wink2]

But, if you join MB and me on our next visit to Newport, and you were to put on a sleeveless dress and don a black wig with pigtails for a stroll on the beach, then... maybe.

Oh, I don't know - it might be fun to reenact THE PEN scene for posterity.  [lghy]

Over the top?  Sometimes the costumes themselves were over the top.  I remember they had Kathy Cody walking around for DAYS with grapes in her hair.  I don't remember if it was Carrie or Hallie.  Probably Carrie.  But GRAPES?  Excuse me?  I mean, come on!  What IS this?  The Music Man?  "One Grecian urn, two Grecian urns, and a fountain:  trickle, trickle, trickle..." lol!  Then there was her 'Tribute to the Great Pumpkin' dress.  Bright orange with a black bow in her hair.   [hall2_rolleyes] A BLACK bow.  So was she in um...partial mourning?  Or was she just a Halloween girl all year?  [hall2_kiss]

I thought Ang got some nice stuff in 1840, but poor Catherine?  Parallel time did NOTHING for taste.  Unfortunately, some of those awful things were totally correct for the time period.  Remember Parallel Time's Julia Collins and that UGLY striped dress?  Yeah.  That one.

Ew.

PT seemed to have a lot more blue combined with green, in 1970 and 1841, and in 1970 more bow ties and clashing colors.   1841 had brighter colors and pastels in the men's suits.

since we're on the subject. ;)

i just finished the laura collins storyline.here vicki is generally attired in a blouse, cardigan sweater and skirt(complete with kilt-pin).

the whole sleeveless dress thing doesn't really get cooking until the barnabas(and in particular the color)episodes begin.

but once it starts that's it(i think she has it in at least eight colors).

I hadn't noticed that Vicki's transition to sleevelessness occurred with the onset of the color shows.

May Moltke quit because she just couldn't stand lurking around in the studio freezing her derriere off in sleeveless dresses in ... NOVEMBER... any longer!

I have heard that Thayer David had the opposite problem under the hot studio lights with Count Petofi's hairpieces and heavy wardrobe.

Let it never be said that our Dark Shadows stars didn't work HARD to make the magic happen!

I expect the research process to be protracted and gruelling, so this may take some time.    I do my homework.  What's a topknot?     Jeeves, what's a topknot?   (LOL... at your post that is, I'm not applauding my own crap here!)

From dictionarydotcom:
topknot
1.   a tuft of hair growing on the top of the head.
2.   hair fashioned into a knob or ball on top of the head.
3.   a tuft or crest of feathers on the head of a bird.
4.   a knot or bow of ribbon worn on the top of the head.

I watched Anna and the King a couple of weeks back (yes, I'm behind the times, still haven't seen all the episodes of a barely-remembered 60's soap opera, let alone movies from the past decade) and all the little Siamese children had topknots, with circlets of pearls (or something) around them.  Might have been sort of cute on Bruno.

Back to the original topic: I watched the infamous episode 766 a week ago, before the stairless scene had been isolated, and didn't noticed the lack of stairs.  Watched it again yesterday, and there it was - or, rather, there it wasn't.  It's wonderful what gaps your mind will fill in for you.  I did notice, a week ago, that the sound in the Old House living room seemed more cavernous than usual - but that's as far as I got.

Lydia... thank you.    Does a mohawk count?   How about the 3 strands of hair on top of Homer Simpson's head?

I just spontaneously and unintentionally imagined cutting from the shot of confused Magda walking around in the empty space created by the lack of stairway, straight to a shot of Widow's Hill, just as the Old House staircase hurls itself off the edge, somehow screaming all the way down, until the cry is stilled when we hear splintering wood.

Magda was thinking, "Oh NO!  I hope it's not planning to do anything rash...!"

The reason?   I don't know, mid-life crisis.    Maybe it wanted to be at one with The Pen, but got there too early.

(All jokes about 1966 may be inaccurate... I've never seen it.)

OH-MY-GOD! This was so funny that it had potential to be soda-through-nose funny, if soda had've been near to me at that time. I can just imagine Barnabas regailling Vicki and Carolyn about the legend of the Old House staircase throwing itself over Widows Hill because it couldn't take everyone walking all over it anymore. It HAD to STAND UP for itself. lol. And now, everytime we hear the widow's wail with stair-creaking sounds, we know the staircase is coming back after us. Perhaps there's a fanfic there? An evil staircase driven mad by being walked all over.

MWUAHAHAHAHAH! ;D
