That is really excellent. So cool to see Jonathan's touches of humor while being a "normal person" at the house. Thanks for the link. :)

Have any of y'all ever looked at the Lyndhurst Estate or Seaview Terrace on Google Earth -- or for that matter, Google Maps, using the satellite imagery? Holy God...

Tarrytown is shown in incredible detail. You can see the freakin' blades of grass at Lyndhurst. The resolution for Seaview Terrace isn't nearly as impressive, but it's not too shabby, either.

So much for getting away with dark and secret things on the Collinwood estate! ;)

I'm in North Carolina, but my family originally comes from Georgia, and I've spent much time there. Went to college at UGA, Athens. Where 'bouts in Georgia are you moving?

We have a secret room in our house, too:

Al Qaeda's executioners do not quickly and mercifully chop off the victim's head. It's a long, sawing process with a knife that may last more than a minute. It's beyond inhuman.

Before the guillotine -- in the old days of "civilized" beheading -- the person with the soon-to-be-empty shoulders would often pay the axeman to sharpen his blade and keep a steady hand. An executioner who had a lot on his mind or might have sank a couple of pints prior to doing the deed might occasionally need two or three strokes to complete the anatomical separation.

"The Shuttered Room" has never been released as a licensed DVD. I haven't seen it in many years, but apart from a typically good performance by Oliver Reed (one of my all-time favorite actors) and the atmosphere of its first half, which was spot on, I remember it being fairly dull. The climax of the story, in Derleth's hands, wasn't all that it could have been, but the movie completely destroys it.
In the story, the "half-sister" is revealed to be a creature reminiscent of Lovecraft's "Deep Ones" -- on the order of the Creature From the Black Lagoon. In the movie, it turns out that Carol Lynley has a twin sister who is a homicidal maniac. Talk about a major let-down...
Given the chance to watch it again, I certainly would. It's been so long, I could probably view it with a reasonably fresh perspective and perhaps get something out of it that I didn't the first time around.

The Leviathans is based on H. P. Lovecraft's mythos only loosely, at best -- the basic commonality being the elder race that is inimical to humanity seeking to return to its former dominance. The critter in the upstairs room has its roots in "The Dunwich Horror," and to some degree "The Shuttered Room" (which August Derleth wrote, based on Lovecraft's notes, calling it a "posthumous collaboration"). DS does a pretty good job capturing the creepy atmosphere of the stories, at least in the early episodes, though there are other Lovecraft tales that might have been every bit as conducive to "borrowing" within the context of the Leviathans -- "The Whisperer in the Darkness" coming immediately to mind. Compared to Lovecraft's Great Old Ones, the Leviathans are simple dilettantes when it comes to clearing the earth of its human cancer. ;)

Here's the Horrorfind message board, which has information about the March show:

I'm a regular guest at the August Horrorfind, which is the big one; the March version is kind of a "mini" Horrorfind weekend.

I've never been to Chiller Theater, but I'm told by many that Horrorfind is the much better con. It's certainly been a good one for me.

I finally broke down and got the thing. I'll probably get to it over the Christmas holidays. I look forward to it with excitement and...trepidation.  [santa_cheesy]

The impact is not trivial for writers and editors who use MS Word -- which is most of the publishing business. I haven't printed out a manuscript in years; virtually every story or novel I send to a publisher is an MS Word file, via email. So when an advisory such as this one comes out, it's something to take seriously. The information I've seen does indicate that just opening an file would be sufficient to execute the malware -- not clicking on a link within a file. That's why the  Office Document Open Confirmation Tool for Office 2000 is considered a "minor intermediary measure" -- because it prevents a Word file from opening on the first activation -- it requires a confirmation from the user.

Still, unless you actively send and receive MS Word files to and from other users, your risk is negligible. It's not something to panic about -- but it's also something to take very seriously if you send Word files back and forth to other users, as I do.

Charles -- as a matter of fact, the character's name is Max Collins; but someone in the know might just swear that it's actually Quentin. ;) Since he comes from a "small fishing village in Maine," the Marine CO constantly refers to him as a "f*ckin' Yankee wharf rat."

But I couldn't imagine how they would be something you'd ever go looking for specifically.

Oh, but I might just. [hall2_grin] The Puffa Puffa Rice commercial was always a favorite, too.

I've remembered the old Crispy Critters song ever since I was a kid. Every now and then I call the cats down for dinner by singing, "The one and only cereal that comes in the shape of animals."

I really do, yes.

Hmm -- Let's see if I can remember the proper sequence of events...

Well, first off, writer Steve Vernon posted a nice review of Blue Devil Island, my upcoming WWII novel (which features a Collins, by the way), and one of his remarks was about old war comics, which he compared it favorably to. This brought to mind the fact that, a while back, I had been intending to look up some stuff on old Bugs Bunny war cartoons, so I went to YouTube, and while searching for cartoons, I came upon some entries for Woody Woodpecker. This made me think of other old TV cartoons, including Linus the Lion-Hearted. So that brought to mind old TV commercials, and the first one I thought of was Post Crispy Critters cereal. When I did a search for Crispy Critters, it also brought up Post Rice Krinkles, and I found that commercial. The first thing I thought of then was that I needed to post this on the DS Board so MB and Midnite could have a field day trying to figure out how I found such a thing.

What do you mean I must be some kind of freaking loon?

...in a Post Rice Krinkles commercial? Sure looks like him.
