I know Julia would be the first person to have a cell phone.

Heheh.  Collinsport was never big on technology.  You never even see a television in Collinwood.  The most they ever had was a radio and telephones.  Nothing too fancy.  I think too much tech detracts from the gothic nature of a series like DS.  Plus, as MagnusTrask said, technology can't save one from the ancient evils in Collinsport.

Oh, I don't know.  By 2005, the cannery is probably closed, due to unions and fishing restrictions, so it moved all operations overseas. And since the canney (and to a lesser extent, tourism) was the backbone of the town, it died as people left for greener pastures.  Even the Collinses left their anscestral seat and while they have staunchly refused to sell their estate, thus preventing greedy developers from turning the ghost town into a resort.

But that happened in a alternate timeline, perhaps the one where Julia and Barn visit 1995?

collinsport would probably be one of those second-rate resort towns that dot the maine coast.lobster shacks,shabby-chic b&b's and gift shops pedaling scrimshaws,ships-in-bottles and blueberry preserves.

but perhaps collinwood is the town's gimmick:"come see the haunted house!".they could give guided tours to tourists,groups of seniors and school children.someone loosely connected with all the activity there could serve as tourguide(harry johnson?).it would all be a somewhat tawdry and threadbare opperation.

Collinsport today?  When I wrote what I hoped would've been one of the novels in the HarperCollins series, I set the story in the present, meaning in 2000.  Collinsport, because of an ingenious decision by Carolyn back in the late '70's to build a luxury hotel, becomes a resort Mecca, with other fancy hotels, Starbucks, posh shops, strip malls, cafes, parks quickly following over time and even cruise ships stopping.  Collinwood, under the direction of David's wife, if fully restored and fully staffed, the grounds and swimming pool likewise.  The Old House?  Fully restored and modernized, meaning all the modern conveniences, which make a retired Willie very happy, having electricity, air-conditioning, central heat, plumbing, microwave, dishwasher, automatic clothes washer and dryer, TV satellite dish on the roof, and an also-retired Barnabas surfing the internet.  And among all that was a scary story I penned.
