I don’t get where Julia is coming from in this episode? I felt that she & Barnabas came to a finite understanding yesterday. Now she’s going for broke? I feel that Julia suggesting a séance is off the wall. Why does she want to contact Sarah, defend David, etc.? Is it that Barn told her he cares very little for her? SFW? This would be the perfect time for her to leave town – Barn implied that he was going to leave Julia alone to appease Sarah. I just don’t get it? Is this all for David’s sake? Is Barn not part of the equation? Julia definitely has something to lose – has she had enough and cares not about being exposed?

I love Liz in this episode. She is so authoritative and defiant, even calling Barnabas on to the carpet for his callous attitude. Also, I very much enjoyed the levity provided pretty much solely by Roger. Julia smiles at Roger's comment, "I'm at my worst with ritual."

Had to thrill at Sarah via Vicki calling Carolyn a liar. I expected a lot more from Barnabas under the circumstances. He really didn’t show any reaction except to freeze. I am wondering if Phyllis Wick ever made it to the Old House or if she died in the carriage accident? Should Barn even know her or be aware of her?

And away we go!

Love Dorrie Kavanaugh’s voice & her character’s hair (lol) and overall 'look'. I'll have to look her up on-line. I always picture Robin Strasser in the role once I forget what DK looks like. I can’t imagine what I’d think if I saw this as a kid watching back in ’67. I might have ended the episode then and there, not showing Vicki in the woods asking, “Where am I?” but whatever. Either way it’s a great Friday cliffhanger.

I am dying to know if that’s what the Spratt Mansion looked like when the location scout found it or if they spruced it up for still shots, and if they spruced it up specifically for 1795 or if they did it for general purposes before the series started. I’m pretty sure that the photo shoot of “Barn” at the “Old House” shows it to be in disrepair, peeling and chipped paint on the columns, etc. I love the spruced up shot of the Old House. I hope we see more than just the one we see in this episode. No red brick out front though, a blooper of sorts?

Big episode in the show's history; I'm surprised the original print wasn't stolen. I hope we've seen the last of the B&W kinescopes.

Love seeing Julia run from Barn. Very funny.

Burke's dead. Very sad for Vicki. I didn't remember that he was confirmed dead. Pictured MR and felt very sad.

Julia defending David re: Sarah is a very intriguing close to the episode.

Hated AM's eye makeup. LOL, Darklady, as I watched Liz saunter around the first floor in that "hideous yellow caftan" my first thought was that if I were a woman of Liz's means I would do nothing but walk around my mansion all day in a dress like that.

Wow, Sarah finally appears to Barnabas and it's not even a Friday!

I was a bit taken aback by Tony's rough handling of Carolyn in the opening scene. For once, we get a scene of substance between Barrett & Lacey. I was going to say that it is interesting that the scene is based on a lie but then I realized that all of Carolyn's time with Tony is based on a lie. I ended up disappointed that Tony believed her BS. I think it is a bit out of character but perhaps being a sucker for a beautiful dame with a sob story is giving us a glimpse into his true nature. Barrett's performance is good, Lacey's is still lacking.

I'm glad Julia quickly convinced Tony (let's hope, once & for all) to stay on her side and keep the 'book' safe. I can't stand lengthy & boring soap opera games of hot potato.

I was surprised that Sarah showed up to David in the foyer. I wonder if she is tied to Collinsport? Could she have appeared to David at aunt Catherine's in Boston? I was even more surprised that Sarah sensed the danger at the Old House before it happened. I loved the (fabulously written) scene with Barnabas & Julia at the Old House. Grayson killed it and Frid was excellent too - a great build-up to Sarah's appearance.

Yeah, DarkLady, Sarah looked none too pleased, lol.

I am getting a very big kick out of Julia repeatedly asking Tony to "see it" and I am getting an equally big kick out of his priceless replies. If one were listening to the show through a keyhole one might get the wrong impression.

Once again, we get a phoned-in (and this time - horribly written) performance by Peter Turgeon and once again he receives credit for it at episode's end. And once again, nothing much new here. Barn assesses Julia's mental state, she once again accuses him of producing her mental torture and once again Barn feigns innocence & sympathy. And once again Barn has his usual push and pull conversation with Carolyn setting up this week's expectations. And, once again, we get the awkward & boring Carolyn/Tony scene.

We do get a few fresh minutes of delight from Louie Edmonds in the form of a returned Roger unwittingly comforting Julia as noted by DarkLady. Things heat up a bit with Hoffman's phone call to Peterson. Julia finally gets to turn the tables on Carolyn by having Tony bust her breaking into his office safe. Fabulous.

I found the heaving door sound effects slightly reminiscent of Leviathans. Carolyn walked left to right to get into Tony's office but yesterday Julia walked right to left.

Regarding Frid as Dave on the phone -- They credit Peter Turgeon in the role of Dr. Woodard in the closing credits -- It would be highly probable that he did the phone voice as well. I will listen to it again and let you know who it sounds like to me.

Do I love Grayson? Yes, I do. Do I love this episode? Hell no. Sorry, most of it is way too over the top for me. Some good moments but this should have been the lost episode as it does not matter (IMO). Nothing new here at all. I did enjoy Barrett's opening voiceover. Did Julia really think that Carolyn would stay with her? I guess she is desperate enough to hope so. After what happened at the mausoleum I really can't blame her. I wish she would have held on to the thought that Barn was doing all this. But I suppose the point is that her guilt is too overwhelming and her psyche too fragile because of it. The only value of this episode for me is being reminded that Vicki & David are at aunt Catherine's. I'd much rather have seen what was going on there, or gone along for the ride with Liz. Driving must be like riding a bike, DL, once you know how, you never forget? And as good a guess as any about Sarah opening the mausoleum door for Julia but it could just as well have been Barnabas letting her out to continue the next phase of his mental torture. My first thought was that it was Sarah.

I wish my home were so well lit during a power outage. How about that wavering reverse image of Julia's door? I'm not feelin' Frid as the voice on the phone. It sounded more like P. Turgeon imitating Frid than vice versa.

I am at the start of MPI VHS Volume 27. This is the tape that features the 1795 promo with Vicki & Barn. Why it's in B&W is beyond me? Gravy promo. Love Vicki's cowardly lion-ish hairdo.

Jerry Lacey’s acting is still not ringing my chimes. It is incredible to think that he will eventually become a scene-stealer in another role. Tony’s a gruff guy, eh? I don’t remember if he ever softens up. It will be interesting to see the changes in Lacey's Tony Peterson further down the pike. Peterson must have some sense of sympathy toward Hoffman because he puts up with quite a bit from her. I wonder if it’s all sympathy or if he believes her on some level. He states that he won’t pretend to understand what’s going on with her, so why is he “helping” her? Oh, yeah, she’s paying him - duh - but still.  Random observation: The 'papers' in Tony’s briefcase are blue.

I love the opening shot of Julia passing in front of TP’s shingle outside his office during the voiceover. Julia looks so put together for someone who is falling apart. Hall is using every physical trick in her book: The sniffling, nose rubbing, glove tugging, etc. and all while looking fabulous in her trench coat and perfectly placed matching scarf. Julia finally thinks of asking Sarah for help (I never thought of that!). Unfortunately, Sarah is not so inclined. That caught me by surprise. And her throwing Woodard up in Julia’s face was a surprise to me also. I expected Sarah to be sympathetic and understand the circumstances, well, I was hoping she would – but she’s just a (ghost) kid.

OMGoodness, Joel Crothers looks hunky in dark colors and a turtleneck & straightened hair. I enjoyed KLS (as per usual). I liked the whole Maggie/Joe/Julia scene. I think I enjoy the Maggie & Joe relationship so much because it represents normalcy. I felt a little cornfused about Julia blatantly talking about Sarah as a ghost but then Joe brought it up and put my puzzlement to rest -- I hadn’t remembered that everyone thinks Sarah is, or might be a ghost. I appreciated the “giggle” moment in the middle of all the heaviness when Maggie insists Joe go to the cemetery with Jules to look for Sarah and he reluctantly acquiesces, but mercifully Jules spares him of the chore. I very much liked the two scenes between Joe & Maggie after Julia leaves the Evans’ cottage. Everything moves along realistically and in character (IMO). I love it when Maggie gets the blank stare going while whimsically proclaiming eminent danger. What a difference in the writing as compared to yesterday's ep.

I have to mention that the print of this episode is beautiful. So much so, that I got a very strong sense of nostalgia, harkening back to watching the show on TV as a kid in the Sixties. It feels the same.

Is the caretaker really necessary in this episode? I have to wonder why writers write the things they do? ‘Why not?’ I guess. Julia’s gone through a whole lot 'today' to get absolutely nowhere, except to know that the notes are still safely tucked away.

Grayson looked particularly fresh in the opening scene. I think the studio lighting has been changed – just a guess. Or maybe it’s a new camera? The wig’s been washed and set but it is definitely more than just that.

Have we ever seen Mrs. Johnson with her hair down? I feel as though I have but I might be thinking of Liz. Mrs. Johnson has feet! Is there a name for the style of shoe she is wearing? They look a little fancy for a maid to wear while working, and for Mrs. J period. It’s that little T-shaped strip of material connecting the shoe sides to the toe portion that has me intrigued. I think they remind me of “little girl” shoes.

The fountain isn't dripping to the bottom level anymore. I wonder if someone slipped on the over-splash? Well, at least all the water streams are still streaming.

I have to agree with Sam Hall – I’m not really digging Grayson’s efforts as of late. The hysteria and desperation are not translating well on the small screen. And on the tech end of things we see things like Grayson waiting and acknowledging stage direction. This is very noticeable in the rat scene. BTW, I’m not diggin’ Sam’s writing too much either. The dialogue sounds awkward to me.

Anyone notice the studio lights in the terrace windows?

I liked Mrs. Johnson’s eveningwear, her version of “the little black dress”, lol. Loved the red-ish collar and big gem stone fastener. I enjoyed all of Clarice Blackburn’s scenes.

Most of the scenes have merit, with the Tony & Carolyn scene being the exception. But the best scene is the ending scene with Barnabas, Julia & Carolyn. It wasn’t technically perfect but it was engrossing. I like that we know Barn is lying through his teeth but Frid wasn’t directed to play it as obvious. I very much appreciated Carolyn’s admonition of Barn for using Julia’s love for him against her in manner Carolyn describes as “cruel”. I’ll give Sam Hall props for writing that “moment” in the scene. It was my favorite in the episode. I have to wonder if Jules would be able to laugh off all of Barn’s attempts at driving her over the edge if Woodard hadn’t been killed. I want to think that she should be telling herself that it is all Barn-induced but her guilt over Woodard’s death apparently makes the torture insurmountable.

I know Lacey is playing up Bogart, but I am also getting a Neil Diamond vibe and a Superman vibe (with the hair curl on his forehead).

I guess I am watching a heavily edited version of this episode, MPI VHS Vol. 26. I didn’t see Barn bite Carolyn, or hear Mrs. Johnson confirm that everyone has noticed the change in Julia.

Tony's office features a large and beautiful arched doorway that we’ll see many more times.

Where do we see it later?
It is where Nicholas Blair takes up residence. I believe it is referred to as, "the house by the sea", maybe even "Blair House" but I don't think so, at least not on the show but perhaps amongst fans. At least I think I'm correct. It may show up as Angelique's room in parallel time but I don't remember for sure.
Peterson grew up in Collinsport poor and envious of the Collins.  Seems as if he is a Burke replacemenmt in the Mitchell Ryan mold.
Now why cannot Barnabas just kill Tony and get the notebook?  Barnabas is so ready to kill off others. It would seem more torturous to Julia if he killed everyone who tried to help.
Julia says," That's a safe isn't it?" as if she had never seen one or knew what one looked like.

Interesting observation, ad, about Tony as a replacement Burke -- a Collins adversary. I also agree with your thoughts about Barn killing anyone Julia goes to for help because that would prevent her from involving anyone putting her in a really desperate place/spot. And yes, LOL, "Is that a safe?" [stfl]
