Title: To Caption This!
Post by: TERRY308 on January 24, 2005, 04:47:18 AM
First of all, I hope this message is on the right site, but if it's not, I'm sure somebody will tell me.

Caption This! is very funny.  Wherever do you get saying for these captions?  I just want to tell you that all of you are very funny.  I draw a blank whenever I see these very funny pictures.   [hdscrt]

But the rest of you.....keep it up.

I agree Terry...whoever thought up the Caption This! section, you rock!  Thanks for those taking the time to capture those pictures, I love reading the captions and trying to think up my own.  It's my favorite part of this site so far!  You know what they say, laughing is good for the health, so keep them coming... :)

There probably should be one topic on this board where cousins can post general comments and questions, so I'd say this topic is definitely in the right spot, Terry308.  ;)

The captions are hysterical!

But I've got to add this friendly reminder, sorry, because I don't relish seeing anyone's creations removed:
Please read The Rules And How To Add Captures To This Board, if you haven't already done so, before posting any captions.  Thanks!

I need some help.  I'd love to play this game...since I have loads of screen captures but all I know how to do is use the "insert image".  How do I add the pic into the box without using this feature?

Is there a place to grab captures (legall), or do y'all just get them from your TVs & DVDs?

Patti

who laughs out loud at many of the captures!!

Well, I get them from my DVD's, Patti... ;D  :-*  I use a Mac computer, so I've been utilizing a DVD capture program one can download at: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9292 (as far as I know this program is designed for Macs only - sorry PC users    :'()  Some of the caps I posted you could only get by advancing through a particular scene frame by frame, picking out intriguing moments.  ;)

Are the moderators willing to re-visit or lighten up on the rules for adding lines to the screen captions? I had one of mine removed recently, and while I understand the need for brevity (based on the definition of a "caption'), mine wasn't excessively long - nor in bad taste - but instead of being edited, it was totally axed.
Suffice to say, my creativity has been stifled as a result, but I'll still enjoy viewing the contributions from others.

I get mine from my DVDs and I don't feel it's illegal to do.  I'm not making video tapes from them and distributing it without permisson.  So I guess it's ok.  :D

Actually, it is illegal (which is the main reason why I take all my screen captures of the DS episodes from tapes I made of the Sci-Fi broadcasts). But MPI seems to be willing to look the other way. Most distributors are not so generous...

OH  :(  I stand corrected.  I'm glad MPI looks the other way because I don't have the means to capture off vhs tapes.  I only have DS dvds...  I hope I don't get into trouble.  :-

Two MPI employees are members of the forum. If they had major problems with anyone posting screen captures from the DVDs (or the MPI VHS tapes for that matter) on the forum, I think they might have said something by now. So, you're probably safe.  :)  But that's strictly my own impression.
(I use my own tapes to be doubly sure.  ;))

Hi, Sandor.

Frankly, we're not.  All of the several posts removed from this caption board due to back-and-forth dialogue weren't excessively long and they weren't in bad taste.  They also weren't captions.

but instead of being edited, it was totally axed.

Well, there are a few reasons that Dom and I opt to remove rather than edit.  First off, we don't edit content unless the content we're removing violates some guideline.  Yet in order to shorten the posts on the caption board, we'd be editing out lines that, on their own, violate no guideline.  Secondly, how can you edit dialogue without changing the writer's intent?  Third, I honestly don't have any extra time (ha!) to spend creating a caption within someone's post, particularly when it's the author's responsibility to see to it that his/her post follows the rules.  Finally, the caption board rules clearly state that posts that don't follow the rules will be removed.

I'm very bummed after learning you had that reaction, Sandor.  I'd hoped that you might rework the song lyrics and repost them.   :-

For some reason, I felt like a student doing an Extra Credit Project for his favorite teacher, calling the essay "Why I Love Don Briscoe," and then getting an "F"!  I've put it in the proper perspective, but don't be bummed on my initial reaction - I was becoming the Paris Hilton of the DS Forum Captions (overexposed, everpresent, and self-indulgent). The creative minds who post the actual photos for captioning are great and deserve fresher blood than mine. Sandor will return after a needed transfusion.  Appreciate you telling it like it is, Midnite.

I'm having a little trouble posting a caption .

It was already answered off the forum, but in case someone else encounters the same problem--

the forum's system has been upgraded ...

  • When previewing a post with attachments, you are now warned you will have to reattach them.

Thank you for bringing that up, J99!  There's a size limit for captures for anyone that still hasn't read the Caption This! rules.   8)

I have a question on the rules.

I understand the need to separate captions from fan fiction, but
we can we at least do a line or two of dialog right?

Also, you may want to edit the description of the caption into the first post of the rules.
People like me are likely to only read the first post.
The only reason I went back and found further rules is because this thread made me double check.

Thanks.  They're separate because, as a policy, we post explanations as the need arises rather than revising what's already been posted and read.  And quite honestly, I don't recommend skipping posts stickied to the top of any BB.

BTW, Dom also added to the Caption Rules.  This is the only active board that has 3 moderators.   [smiley_profileleft]  :)  [smiley_profileright]

Midnite, you accomplished the impossible.

I actually looked at those last three smilies and... smiled!

It's the smilie version of the Trimurti (Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva) at Angkor Wat!  too cute!

Yikes, there are long posts in their picture game!  No wonder our caption rules took you by surprise.  Our caption game is modeled after SciFi's defunct Caption This! and similar caption sites.

Yup, much longer posts, but I understand things here, and I look forward to the challenge.

Right.  :D

To clarify, posts with more than 2 lines of dialogue are removed.

Are the images on the main page currently available for captioning?
It would be a lot of fun to caption some of those that are honoring the history of Dark Shadows.

I've honestly never considered that, McTrooper. If some were to be captioned here, a copy would need to be posted on this board because they only last for 24 hours on the main page and once they disappear, anyone who hadn't seen them there wouldn't know what capture was being referred to. But I suppose that if someone thinks of a caption, they could PM me a request and I'll post the capture in question here.

If the thread is on page 2 can we repost the picture from page 1,
so we don't have to go back and see the page one before seeing page 2?

Hmmm...not really. But once we switch over to SMF 1.1 I believe there might be a feature that will allow the attachments to be seen on every page.  :)

When are we going to lose "fill in the blanks" and go back to the original Caption This where anyone can come up with their own captions?

We can post on photos that have no paragraph.

Is some change going to make that impossible?    I don't want to lose that.

All will be explained once everything is in place. Until then, just go with flow. Some may not like what's to come - though many more will probably be very happy with the changes because people will be able to play with a more level playing field...

Whatever happened with this?   [pointing-up] (I've been away for while.)

Also, have the reply functions been removed from some of the captions?  I was attempting to respond to one from episode #253 and there was no way to post a reply.  So I checked some of the others in that section, and they had no reply buttons either.  I checked the last section (Year 5) and there were reply buttons.  Please clarify.  Thanks!
