The Edge Of Night

I hear that The Edge Of Night is A LOT like Dark Shadows! Has  anyone seen it? Is it good? I really wish Sci-Fi would air this too! It seems pretty good...

I used to watch Edge of Night. It's not really very much like Dark Shadows. It was more of a traditional soap, although the stories tended to center around the courtroom rather than the hospital as most soaps did back in those days. They had some good murder mysteries and intrigue, and occassionally they did have a "ghost" show up, but it was usually done in a way to suggest the ghost was merely the specter of someone's imagination. Good show, but not Dark Shadows.

Based on everything I've heard about Edge of Night I really wish it would re-run....love mysteries/thrillers so think I would enjoy the show.

it was promoted as the 1st MYSTERY soap opera. when it switched from cbs to abc, our local affiliate did not show it. instead a uhf station showed it the next morning, so i never watched it. at least two DS cast members were on the show. JOEL CROTHERS and ROBERT GERRINGER. USA network repeated the last 5 yrs of the show, back in the 80s. if it was owned by abc, it would probably be showing on soapnet but it was/is owned by p+g.

What memories this post brings back. I used to stay up late at night and tape all the USA Network EDGE OF NIGHT reruns. They reran the last 3 and a half years, (not 5)  of EDGE.  June 1981-Dec 1984, in the latter part of the 1980's.

There was an interview conducted with the programmer of Soapnet recently on their website, and EDGE was one of the shows mentioned as one they expect to pick up in a couple of years. They also want to get DS eventually too. The problem is Soapnet is so new,  they don't have the funds pick up the old reruns of many soaps.  And from what I hear, Proctor and Gamble, (which owns the  EDGE series) charges a ridiculously high fee for syndication.  Don't be surprised if it turns up on Soapnet eventually though.  Only recently did they start to make a dent in the cable market, and generate some ad revenue. In case anyone is interested, P&G is only offering the 1977-1984 episodes of EDGE for syndication. Unfortunately, many of the shows before 1977 were destroyed.

I wish SoapNet would start airing same day episodes of Days Of Our Lives!!!!!!!! During school, I'll have to record, to be able to watch!!!!!!!!! But, if they don't have money, they won't be able to afford anything that belongs to 'posh' NBC! I hope they air reruns from 1999-present of DOOL in the future...

Soapnet has always been open to running same day repeats of the NBC and CBS shows, and has even had discussions with both networks. So far nothing has come out of the negotiations.  Columbia which owns DAYS, has been trying for 5 years to launch their own Soap network but has not been able to get the project off the ground.

I remember watching the Edge of Night.  I think it came on either just before or after DS when I watched it.  I don't remember much about it.  Just one story line is trapped in my memory bank.  It was about a person dressed up as a clown posioning a young girl.  It was a fun show but not as much fun as DS.

When I was a kid, my mom watched THE EDGE OF NIGHT, along with AS THE WORLD TURNS and SECRET STORM. The opening of EDGE back then was quite memorable to me. The show held my interest on those occasions that I watched it, and I know I caught a few episodes of it in the early 80s.

Here's a link to a great Web site about the show:

Hi Birdie  :)

A slight correction:  That was not EDGE OF NIGHT that featured the killer clown you mentioned. It was actually a soap called SOMERSET. That story was in 1971, and featured Joel Crothers as Julian Cannell. The story was very bizarre indeed, as the "killer clown" haunted the dark halls of the Moore family mansion for months.  The clown was finally revealed to be that of Zoe. Zoe feared her husband Julian had fallen in love Andrea Moore. First she haunted Andrea to drive her insane, and then she tried to poison Andrea's eggnog!  At that time, Somerset was written by the late great mystery writer, Henry Slesar who also created the wonderful mysteries on EDGE, from 1966-1983.

If Craig Slocum appeared on AS THE WORLD TURNS in the 60's or 70's I am afraid most of those shows were destroyed a long time ago!

TEON was a great soap because of its mystery element.  There seemed to always be a murder trial taking place.

It got its roots from the Perry Mason radio show but Earle Stanley Gardner wanted to take Perry in a different direction when it went toTV so PM became a weekly court room drama with no soap elements.  John Larkin, the original Mike Carr was the voice of Perry on the radio soap.

Many of the older episodes were done live so no tapes exist.

Edge of Night was the last soap to be broadcast live. It's final live telecast was in 1975 when it switched from CBS to ABC.

For all you trivia fans, Michael Stroka played a character on EDGE in 1975 called Dr. Quentin Henderson!  Yes, QUENTIN!!  I wonder if that was intended to be an in joke reference to his DS days?

Cheryl, when was Craig on the show? I use to watch it but I can't seem to recall him on the show?
