'90 Montage Pic Question
« on: June 29, 2013, 09:10:17 PM »
On 'one' of the Boards, the surrounding montage pics are of the '90-'91 series.
What role did Barbara Steele play?
Was Jean Simmons the Joan Bennett character (in real-time and 1795)?
Was there a Quentin type?

Thanks,

Patti

But, as I read my post, I'm guessing BS played the Julia Hoffman roles....

You are correct, Patti.

I was not enamored with the '91 prime-time remake when it aired.  I thought it lacked the subtlety of the original, how it was basically a rehash of HoDS, and I didn't like what was done to some of the characters.  Later, it grew on me more.

Jean Simmons was Elizabeth Collins Stoddard.

They never got to the Quentin story, so there never was a Quentin type. Interesting casting question, though...  [ghost_wink]

Was Adrian Paul not going to play Quentin in Season 2?

that appears to be the case. or has at least been widely speculated...

but as it stood paul just played jeremiah during the 1790 sequence. so as it aired there was no "Quentin type" of character(or werewolf)on the canvas yet.

Since the "W" word was mentioned here, I'll ask:
In the 2012 movie (Depp/Burton),
Carolyn was a werewolf.
Was this just 'throwing we true fans a bone'??
I hope not  [ghost_tongue]

since it meant absolutely nothing to the plot at hand and wasn't even introduced as a story element until the film's last five minutes...

then, yes, I can only assume it was meant to tease at the possibility of a werewolf themed sequel. presumably revolving around Quentin.

I rolled my eyes and groaned at the "reveal". it was my absolute least favorite part of the movie. [ghost_tongue]

Same here.  Most everything else that bothered me the first time I saw the movie I have come to accept--and sometimes even appreciate.  But this?  Ugh!  (And especially the way it was played out, with a stupid line that makes it a deliberate joke.)

Sans the stupid line - why is this plot twist such a bone of contention? It seems just about everyone hates it. What's the big deal?

Dom, it's because the foreshadowing is so very subtle that it effectively comes out of nowhere, and comes across as bad or desperate storytelling. Once you've seen the movie, in later viewings you can pick up the clues. But they are so subtle that the first time through, they don't even register as clues to something being up. They are so tiny and spread out that they don't add up to anything until you've been shown the answer. That is not good storytelling.

I'm sure it's very possible that more significant moments were filmed, but then left out in the final cut. For someone who has already seen the movie, the concept for the character works better. But the jokey, flip way that they treated the reveal still grates. If it were played more straight, it would be much easier to accept.

it's storytelling 101...

you don't introduce plot, out of thin air, that doesn't in any way relate to the story at hand, in the last five minutes of a film *except* to open up the door to a sequel. Carolyn was a minor character in this thing. until her final minutes she just acted sulky and sullen. she served no purpose in the narrative.

and it was just plain stupid. [ghost_tongue]

I felt the same about
Laura.
The whole end was a disaster except for the final moments between Barnabas and Angelique and Barnabas and Vicki.
