Current Talk '03 II / Re:Angie's logic?
« on: October 24, 2003, 04:10:24 PM »
Darling, I suggest that it is ill-advised to use the word "logic" in any sentence involving Mrs. Barnabas Collins (nee Bouchard).

In all fairness, I think the character of Angelique is really badly handled in the 1840 storyline.  The character's current out-of-control spree abruptly turns into something else halfway through the story, and the writers do not manage to make the transition at all plausible, at least not for this viewer... I am sure there are others with different opinions, and that's the beauty of fandom...

cheers, Steve

Current Talk '03 II / Re:Pure Chemistry

Well, just chipping in my two drachmae on this.  I've always enjoyed Frid's scenes with both actresses under discussion.  The characters had relationships of such an extremely different nature that it doesn't feel fair to compare them.  I've known scenes between Julia and Barn just as intense, in their own way, as any between Barn and Ang.  I think one just aired--Barn's shock at "Jude-lia's" (gods, now there'a sWitcholeen for you) icy reprimand.

There's also the factor that through the history of the show, Parker and Frid had far fewer scenes together than was the case with Frid and Grayson.  From Julia's arrival on the scene in Parallel Time, down to the end of 1840, as one fan commented some years ago, B & J really seem to be "joined at the hip."  That's going to create a very different kind of onscreen energy than you get in the occasional spark-flying salvos between Barn and Ang.

This is a wonderfully crafted film, which deserves to be more widely known.  I thought David Hemmings and Sharon Tate had great onscreen chem in it, too.  It's a sharp, subtle telling of one of the oldest stories on Earth.

Thanks for posting this notice, Vlad.

Joey, I don't have an answer for you, but will just comment that I personally found the scripts of Marmorstein and Swann on a stellar level rarely attained by Sproat, whose writing seemed much more workmanlike--serviceable but not much beyond that.

It's interesting that Sam Hall detested Marmorstein as a writer--I remember Grayson complaining about his scripts.  She had a couple of his shows to do when she was first on.  So far as I can figure out, Sam replaced Marmorstein as a writer for the show.  Gordon Russell joined around July 1967, I believe.

Jennifer, honey, I'm so sorry!  I'm ignorant of the details but heard the man in the laundromat complaining that the fabulous day (weatherwise) could have been better if the Sox had won.

My condolences,  Steve

Hi Melissa, great to see you again!

how are things?  Welcome to this Forum! You'll love it  There are lots of Grayson fans here, and we have some great specials. Did you get a gander at the photos of our gal's glamorous traveling ensemble for her trip to Mexico?  They're somewhere on this page.

Current Talk '03 II / Re:My goodness what a slap!!!
« on: October 16, 2003, 08:00:11 PM »
Samantha is one of the few elements of 1840 that works consistently throughout the storyline for me, and it's all thanks to Virginia Vestoff's brilliant, bravura performance.  I wouldn't be surprised if Vestoff demanded a real slap, but would be a little doubtful whether Selby would actually hit her, since he seems like such a tender-hearted fellow.

The non-supernatural stuff involving the Quentin/Samantha/Gerard triangle is the springboard for the best scenes in the entire final period of DS' history.

Jennifer, thought of you this a.m. when the conductor emerged into the car at Harvard Square to make an official announcement about how the Sox need to "take down those Yankees" now.  He rather endearingly added that he's been married for 30 years and his wife is ready to kick him out of the house, but he's gonna watch that game anyway.  Even though this is Boston, Ice Queen Capital of the World, people were grinning and smiling at the old dear as he rambled on. His speech lasted at least 5 minutes.

I find it all quite confusing, since the paper headlines averred that if the team took yesterday's game, that would be it.  Will it EVER be over?

Hoping for respite and nepenthe (but I'll take what I can get),

Steve  PS. to the darling Mysterioso:  I had no idea T Williams corpse had to be decapitated before they tossed him in the freezer.  That's a rather gruesome detail!  but then cryogenics is gruesome, though I don't see why people find it any more upsetting than "regular" embalming, which I personally find a revolting practice.  natter natter (feel free to deep six this nonsense)

Just to chime in with my two drachmae on the subject...

Agree that Liz was Vicki's Mom; I watched the Oct.-Nov. 1966 episodes recently and the way Joan was playing the role was definitely as if Vicki was the daughter by whom she was trying finally to do right, bringing her to Collinwood.

I think Hanscomb was the Father and that Liz had had an affair with him.  It's too bad they did not do a storyline where Frank found Hanscomb and brought him back to Collinwood for a showdown with Liz.  Perhaps this was discussed and then switched to the Jason story that they did wind up doing.

As for Vicki's fate, she should have married Frank.  Conrad Fowkes was by far the most personable of the men they paired her with, and there seemed to be some genuine chem between the two.  I assume that Fowkes ran afoul of DC and left the series because of that--happened with a lot of other talented folks (Fowkes?)  When AM wanted out of the series in the Fall of 1968, I'd have preferred a storyline where Frank returned to Collinwood and brought Vicki out of her depression in the wake of Peter/Jeff's disappearance from the scene.  I'd have relished dialogue along the lines of "Peter Bradford was just a bad dream."  Yeah, the kind of thing you get after too much chips and salsa late at night.

I don't think DS' run would have been prolonged if Moltke had stayed on board, but we would have gotten the chance to see her do other roles.  I don't see Vicki being paired with Barnabas under any circumstances.  I think the writing team would have had to have been given a freer hand to have developed some different styles of storytelling after 1968 for Moltke to have had sufficient interest in staying, and it is possible that this kind of overhaul might have prolonged the life of the series. Since I personally believe that DC chose to pull the plug on the series, I don't think any amount of retooling or ratings burst could have saved it.

Jennifer, dear, you really don't want to know the things your posts do to my depraved little brain.

"Clinched the wild card" sounds an awful lot like "doing the wild thing" to this kid's ears.  And you really don't want to know (or maybe you do) the image I get from those big men going down 0-2!!! (I guess it leaves 69 in the dust???)

Hope your team wins big hon,

Steve (the bus driver informed us last night as we were approaching Manchester NH that the Sox were losing 3 to 1, I think--he was listening in on his little radio, I guess)

Thanks for requesting the eclaircissement, Fran.  I live in Boston (yeah, I have to keep up that fantasy) and everything Jennifer wrote is opaque to me.

I'd really rather wait on the clippers till after my trip to Canada, though.  My boyfriend prefers me with long hair!

Well, to be brutally candid, the words "How about them Sox?" is enough to put me into a stupor worthy of Laura Collins and a cheerful blaze.  The eyes just glaze right over.

And I thought Nomar was a character from The Day the Earth Stood Still. As in Klaatu Nikto Nomar Barada?

but pay me no mind, I really live on Mars, the whole Boston thing is just a fiction...

Talking of news, the word from California is really quite frightening.  I'm going to Canada on Friday and I really wish I did not have to come back.

My favorite has to be Cassandra, and it's not just because that was how I got my first glimpse of her as a wee one back in 1968.

I don't know what it is, but somehow a lot of different factors came together to make Cassandra a really interesting role, from a dramatic point of view.  IMO the scenes with Barnabas are a lot hotter because the character is trying so hard to veil her love and lust for him under a thin veneer of hatred.  There's also the wonderful scenes with Nicholas, and her great clothes that run the gamut from frumpus maximus to uptown chic.

And then, of course, there's ... THE WIG.

My runner-up would be Leviathans Ang.  Even though she has so little do in that storyline, she has some great scenes, fab clothes, and spectacular hairpieces.

In my not-so-humble opinion, the era of anything on television remotely resembling theater--shorthand for narratives with three dimensional characters and some semblance of attention to production detail--is in its death-throes.

By five years from now, there will be very few series in any genre left on the tube that do not fit some version of the "reality" TV model. Even cable is going the same way--a friend has been updating me on the struggle to keep East Enders on the BBC's American channel, but apparently even the Beeb is more interested in "Trading Spaces" or whatever the Hel it's called than a quality series.

As for Port Charles, I never watched it, but I think its failure is indicative only of a show that did not start out with very much reaching the end of the line.  They kept that Caleb story going for, what, 2 years?  it was meant to last a couple of months, iirc.
