Hee hee, leave it to a nurse to think of that!  I wonder if you and Carol are getting as much of a kick out of the plan to sleep upright in a chair as I am.  So what's unusual about that??!! ;)

Am I hallucinating or did the quote button disappear? [hdscrt]

I think I will pass on sleeping in a chair, did enough of that when my daughter was a baby! She refused to sleep in a crib, and we finally figured out she wanted her own bed, a double bed no less. Nothing beats a king size bed, which is what I will be sleeping in tonight.

It's not weird at all! It's just me tinkering. [wink2] And I've successfully accomplished what I was after...

Well, Barnabas was a bit wobbly. Those siderails do come in handy when your tipsy.

I've never been able to sleep sitting up altho my husband and daughter can do it quite well.  When Elaine was a baby, I'd give her the bottle while I'd watch an old movie on AMC or the old Reuter news roll(this was before CNN came along).   Once she burped, she went back to bed and so did I.

Could you tell me how it is possible to "use siderails too much"?  How endangered does a patient have to be before you can use the siderails?

Right before my Dad died, he was in a nursing home, suffering the after effects of a massive brain bleed. Having enough mental awareness to know the condition he was in, and being determined not to stick around any longer, he began attempting to throw himself out of his wheelchair to the floor.

It happened twice before they called me.  And when I demanded to know why they hadn't restrained him, they informed me that they needed me to come down there to sign paperwork that would allow him to be restrained in the chair.  They absolutely REFUSED to do it until I arrived and put my signature on that paper.

How much greater would their liability have been now that they had already admitted knowing what he was trying to do and refusing to prevent it?  My urge to slap the crap out of the bossy little bureaucrat I had to deal with was obvious enough to make Dad's blessed nurse come and lead me away before I assaulted the woman.

Sorry to wander so far off topic, but Official Stupidity makes me crazy and furious.

I no longer work in a hospital(doctor's offices are my thing now but that could be a whole other topic)but friends of mine who do work in hospitals or nursing homes tell me "liability" is the main thing for both patient and institution.

Everyone is trying to cover each other's a** so to speak.

Institutions don't want to get sued by families for restraining patients without family giving permission to do so.  Therefore, if something does happen to the patient in relation to the restraints, the institution is covered because family gave permission.

I can't give an aspirin to a patient in the waiting room of our office without getting permission from doctor and patient and practically having the patient sign a form stating that he had a headache and was requesting medication.

It's all bureaucracy because someone probably sued a doctor/institution for a restraint that was applied that possibly caused further damage(breakdown of skin that could cause infection leading to more problems) so now they want the families to authorize its use.

Believe me, nobody does nothing without getting permission and generating tons of paperwork.
